I found that in 1999 :
"Also, in 1999, while Lavergne was serving in the Army at Fort Polk he sexually assaulted a woman in Evangeline Parish. He was driving a '93 Ford pickup with La. license plate of S074500. (Note: Police collected DNA (sperm from a washcloth) at the scene. This evidence may have been what helped them connect Lavergne to Pate.)

in April, Lavergne married Lainey Vasseur in September 1999. Lainey left him after several assault incidences. They divorced after he went to jail in October 2000 for the assault on Parish.

The 1999 arrest report is there (horrible reading) and no color is given for his '93 ford pickup (page 4) : http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/804...randon-Scott-Lavergne-1999-Arrest-Updated.pdf

How often would LE cross check the DNA found in the girls case to the database, or is it something done automatically?

Specifically, I would like to know if Lavergne's DNA has been checked against this case. I followed Lavergne's case extensively.

This could be bringing rumour to the forefront, but, I have not seen this discussed here, and it kind of goes along with my theory that the sperm donor could be a different donor than the murderers:

I am wondering if anyone knows who the fellow was that JB hugged in Headland on the night she died. She met up with him at a gas station in Headland, does anyone know anything about this guy? I don't think he had anything to do with her death but I have wondered if she may have told hims something that could be related to the crime only thorugh hindsight.

From the al.com archives:

A man from Michigan who was at a party the night of the murders near where the car was found is also a "very viable" suspect, the chief said, even after tests failed to match the man's DNA to that found on J.B.'s clothing.

The man, whom Spivey would not name, left town within days of the murders, the chief said, adding that investigators have traveled to Michigan three times to interview him.

The man cannot account for three or four hours of his time on the night of the murders, and later made "suspicious" statements to people, Spivey said. He did not elaborate on what he meant by suspicious.

Tipton says here that it was "not unusual" to find a car dumped after a night of partying.

I wish the reporter had clarified if he meant it was not unusual to find a car dumped in that particular location or not.

Tipton, 35, told the sergeant to keep an eye on the car, figuring that teen-agers may have left it there after a night of partying.

Tipton - a pilot, skydiver and bungee jumper and 15-year veteran officer who is not easily rattled - said that was not unusual.

Local man loses daughter

Published 12:00am Tuesday, August 3, 1999

Lanier Beasley and his daughter J. B. said goodbye to each other Thursday afternoon with the promise of being together the following weekend.

Beasley said when he saw his daughter on Thursday she was "extremely happy."

"She was a wonderful dancer" he said. "Incredibly talented. She had just performed in Mindscape at the Basketcase Cafe and was looking forward to perhaps a scholarship in dance when she graduated. She had a good future ahead of her. This is tough. Real tough."

Promise :(

"For seventeen years, I had a beautiful, lovely daughter that God gave me and, then, in one night somebody decided they had the right to take her away from me."

"I promised Tracie when she was laying in that casket that if it took my last breath, I'm going to do all I can to find who did it. That was my promise to her and i aim to keep that promise."

Regarding the gas:

WE LEARNED YESTERDAY A TEAM OF F-B-I AGENTS FROM QUANTICO, VIRGINIA, WAS IN TOWN.

THOSE AGENTS HAVE ALREADY GONE HOME.

CHIEF SPIVEY SAYS HE HOPES TO HEAR SOMETHING FROM THEM BY FRIDAY.

LYNSLEY, I UNDERSTAND SOMEONE ASKED THE CHIEF ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF GAS IN THE GIRLS' CAR WHEN IT WAS FOUND?

WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

SOMEONE DID ASK HOW MUCH GAS WAS IN THE CAR.

CHIEF SPIVEY SAID HE COULDN'T ANSWER THAT QUESTION, BUT IT WAS SOMETHING
INVESTIGATORS HAD CHECKED.

WE ASKED WAS THAT INFORMATION SOMEHOW SIGNIFICANT.

AND HE SAID IT IS. EXACTLY

WHY

IT'S SIGNIFICANT.

HOPEFULLY WE'LL FIND THAT OUT TOMORROW.

Here's another bit of TV coverage that was aired on the oxygen netwrk back in 07.
The last three minutes talks about the case.

Notes on this segment:

  • 18:47 — Crime scene footage shows J.B.'s car as discovered, facing north on Herring Avenue. Based on the position of the car it is likely the killer approached from James Street and turned onto Herring, immediately pulling the car to the right shoulder. The likelihood that the killer approached from the south possibly goes against the Depot Lane murder site scenario, as Depot Lane is north of where the car was found. The other possible murder site mentioned in MSM reports, named as an area off 123 just south of downtown Ozark, is more likely the actual murder site based on the position of the car.

    HerringAveScene.jpg

  • 19:29 — "The car was left completely open." -Myron Williams, Deputy Police Chief

  • 20:08 — Tracie worked at the JCPenney at the Wiregrass Commons Mall in Dothan.

  • 20:14 — "[Tracie] drove her car home from JCPenney and J.B. followed her. It was about five after ten when they left." -Carol Roberts, Tracie's mother

  • 20:51 — "Somewhere between the [Big/Little] convenience store and Highway 231, the girls were abducted."

[*]KR, can we work on trying to determine how many stop signs/lights there are between the Big/Little Store and 231, via both 27 and 123? A carjacking-type scenario while the girls were at a stop would not have been nearly as elaborate or risky as posing as a police officer or a distressed motorist. If we could get photos of and familiarize ourselves with each stop along both routes, it may be possible to determine which stops were a more likely environment for a sudden carjacking-type attack on the girls.

  • 21:07 — "We believe that they were killed sometime between 12:00 and 3:00 a.m." -Myron Williams, Deputy Police Chief

Another interview:

Ozark police investigators said last year that the person who killed J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett would be found by the 10th anniversary of their deaths.

That anniversary was Saturday, and the families still don’t know who took their daughters’ lives.

“It’s hard to one day have a daughter and then God’s greatest gift is snatched away from you and you don’t have any answers,” said Carol Roberts, Hawlett’s mother.

“We’ve held on to every word law enforcement has told us. We’ve been taken up so high, and then just been dropped.”

Yes, I'll get to it later today- I'm up to my ears in income tax stuff right now. I think I can do it from home by looking at maps.

I was very suprised to see Myron in the interview. I worked with him back in the 90s when he was with the sherriff's dept. He also worked security at night at my old job. He is a super nice guy.

Someone mentioned way back in an earlier post about where was Robert Yates when the murders occurred. I looked this morning and I think we can rule him out. He was in the northwest at the time and this was also around the time he was being investigated and arrested out there.

Have a look though some of the pictures on the above posted facebook page. Few different models of trucks. The mirrors on some of them stick out to me.
The thing with these garages is that they seem to change ownership quite regularly so who knows who owned what and when. Maybe american towing was at this location? Maybe Barrentine was more of a "freelance" type of employee an just took work whereveer he could get it. Maybe he has some sort of connections to this garage. To me the location of this garage is at a key point on the map. If the girls were going home from the B/L store they would have turned left off of 27 onto south union(123) and straight down to 231 to Dothan. This garage is on this route and just a minute or so BEFORE the turnoff to James st.

Just plugged all relevant destinations into google maps and it really tells a story for me. interesting how close Barrentine lived to both the B/L store and Herring Road, forms a perfect triangle. Also of note there is a school of dance just 200 ft from where Barrentine lived at the time. I wonder if the girls ever spent anytime there. It would be good if we could find out if the girls had any type of history at all in Ozark. Did they visit often? friends? Dance lessons?
