GUILTY AL - Lauren Burk, 18, Auburn student, abducted & murdered, 4 March 2008

I will be more interested to find out if he is in any way associated with the Hoover Crips gang. The hat worn in the NC case appears to be gang related and from the ATM photo looks like there was more than one person involved.

In Lauren's case I don't think so. This looks like a regular punk with robbery as a career. He lived in one of the tiny towns that dot the area. Remember he confessed to robbing an elderly woman at Walmart. I think he ran the roads in the area from Auburn to Columbus, Ga. stealing at every opportunity.

In Eve's case the perp had some serious fire power more indentifiable with street gangs. Both of these are so horrific and coincidental as the girls were from Georgia attending out of state schools. Still shocking and numbing.

As we learned more about the cases at hand I can see they are not the same MO.

So he graduated from robbery to kidnap and rape? They aren't charging him with a robbery so it makes me wonder.

They usually do escalate as the crimes continue. I believe LE said an attempted rape but found no evidence of an actual rape. The end result of his crime is the worst possible for a beautiful young girl and her family.

Charges are listed in this ajc article. One of them is capital murder during a robbery.

I'm confused, please help. Somehow he got her into his car, attempted rape, she got out and was shot, he drove to get gas, and proceeded to torch her car.

Or, was her car used for all this? And that is why he torched it?

I know we don't know exactly how it happened...but I always try to make sense out of the senseless.

It IS horrific and he WILL rot. Definites.

I don't fully comprehend it either...especially since I have good knowledge of the campus where she and her car were found. It is amazing to me that he was able to do all this without someone catching him in the act.

My guess is that she left the boyfriend's apartment and was either approached in the parking lot as she was getting into her car - OR went to a gas station or another quick stop and was approached there. He brandished a weapon, made her get in the car and drive. Had her pull of on the side of a rural road where she was found (that road goes onto a main highway) and attempted to rob/attack her. Because she was missing clothing, it seems like she fought back hard, he shot her and dumped her out of the car, leaving her for dead. Took her car to a gas station and got gas, drove it to the lot.

This is where I get confused. The lot where the car was found is quite busy; it is one of the main lots where girls park their cars behind the dorms. It's where I parked as a freshman. There are people coming and going at all hours, so I cannot believe no one noticed a man dousing a car with gas and setting it on fire. In fact, there was a car parked right next to it that suffered substantial damage as I saw on Greta.

My gut feeling is that someone saw him in several places and that he seemed out of place, acting nervously or suspiciously. The security camera probably nailed him the most.

These are all just thoughts of mine...anyone else have any? Any others with knowledge of the AU campus?

I believe LE said they had witnesses from very early on. So, that could mean the parking lot. Coupled with cameras and witnesses then his goose is cooked. He doesn't look like the brightest bulb with all those robberies all over anyway.

I do recall hearing about witnesses. Can you imagine seeing this happening??!! Out of fear I would have said nothing...as I dialed 911.

So he torched the car because of his DNA?

I read that his car was full of evidence...so that's why I thought maybe she was in his car.

I'm sure her friends knew where she was headed when she left them and others know that she arrived or didn't arrive...so LE probably has a valid time-line. We have been told she left at 8PM and her car was on fire at 9:27...correct?

They found this girl 2 miles behind my house. Scary stuff.

Glad they caught the perp.

Hope he gets the DP.
Rest in peace Lauren.

She did say he hasn't been the same since serving in Iraq though. I wonder if he/they sought help for him if there really were issues?

Im sorry if I appear judgemental here --- I dont want to hear how serving our country in Iraq turned a sweet boy into a murderer --- I just dont buy it
Earlier, it was reported on Fox News that he rec'd a dishonorable discharge because he punched a superior officer in the face. (sorry, no link but they reported this on the Fox Report w/ Laurie Dhue and showed his mom apologizing, briefly)
Just sounds like an angry, angry coward to me & although his mom did appear genuinely sorry and distraught, he is to blame, not the military , IMO

mike'smom,
I'm with you. This creep is not an honorable soldier.
I heard the same Fox report that stating that he hit an officer in the face.
He was also known around the neighborhood as being a bully who flippin terrorized the kids smaller than him.

I think it is quite possible that he was so well known that he traveled to Auburn where nobody knew him or could ID him --- by hearing the elderly woman's account as to how brutal he was, poor sweet girl probably never had a chance,IMO

We live in a world of crime, I realize that of course, but it is so difficult to hear about our youth being killed while trying to better themselves through education

I agree. My youngest graduates from high school this year and I am petrified for her to go away to college....but violence is everywhere.
Back to this case, it seems the perp has had a short fuse and been violent for a long time. I think he picked Ms. Burk randomly, that almost makes it worse.

I'm with you guys on being frightened for our children. My daughter is a college freshman and I hate to say it, but there have been times I have called her cell phone and when I didn't get an answer I have worried that the "boogie man" got her! There are so many "boogie men" these days that it makes you sick with worry...or it does me at times. I try to have faith and think good thoughts, but then senseless acts like these occur and BAM...I am a nervous nelly again! :(

sadly, i agree philamena.... poor lauren was walking/driving on her campus feeling safe ...it was after dark and unfortunately this coward came upon her, he was out looking for his next vic, IMO
