I'm still speechless. I remember when Amanda & Gina went missing and I never dreamed they would be found alive after all this time. How bittersweet it must be for Amanda to be freed right before Mother's Day only to learn her mother has passed. Gina's family must be devastated to discover that this monster wasn't a stranger to many of them.
Speaking of monsters, this man doesn't look like one. His home doesn't look like a dungeon. His Facebook portrays him as a proud father & grandfather. Evil should not be able to blend in with the rest of us so seamlessly. This is the sort of thing that terrifies me as a parent. Three siblings, at least one presenting a kind face to the world, were able to carry out the most evil of deeds for over a decade in what appears to be a decent neighborhood without raising suspicions. How do you guard against something like that? How do we combat that which looks so normal?
This story is similar to the "respectable" man in Austria who kept his daughter in a dungeon under the house and forced her to have children who never saw the light of day.

Eventually he left some of the children on the doorstep and he and his wife raised them as their own, while some of the children were left below. He lied to everyone he knew. He even rented out rooms to people and still kept it a secret.
He was completely evil but didn't "seem" evil. He came close to getting caught many times.
It's just my opinion, but evil people always give themselves away. There are no perfect crimes, and I bet we find out there were numerous times when this whole thing was close to being found out. I think he had help from his brothers, and maybe other family members. There has to be major dysfunction in that family maybe going back generations.
People always look back and remember things that didn't jive or stories that didn't add up. But often people see exactly what they want to see.
We just can't be naive and trust everyone just because they are "family." I know that there's pressure in families to "get along" sometimes we have to trust our gut feelings.
Having a nice house or a job or being deacon of a church have nothing to do with whether someone is evil.
