I'm not sure she had access to TV. If she did, then why didn't she know her mom had died (she was told last night)? When it happened, and many, many times since over the years, it has been mentioned on the news that her mom died, many think as a direct result of the stress of this whole situation.

Instead of letting her watch the news, I think perhaps her captors told her that "People are looking for you, it's all over the news." You know, in a sadistic type of taunting.

She might have known her mom had died, right? Do we know for a fact that she was told last night? It was posted earlier in the thread that all 3 watched the search for Amanda's body, so it wouldn't surprise me if she had known about her mom, too. Either way, it is heartbreaking.

Someone posted last night that Castro forced Amanda to watch news reports of her mother's death.

I am not angry or outraged at the dispatcher but common sense says that she/he should have kept Amanda on the line. Amanda stated that she was afraid her captor might return at any time. What if he had and, because the dispatcher ended the call, police were not aware of it? They had no clue what they might be walking into - there could have been weapons or a hostage situation. Telling Amanda to stay with the neighbor did not guarantee her safety, actually it potentially put the neighbor in jeopardy too. The dispatcher didn't even tell Amanda to go into the neighbor's house, shut the door, and wait for police to arrive. She/he didn't ask if there were other people in the home, if Amanda was injured, or any information about the young child who was with Amanda. All of that would have been very important information if Amanda had been recaptured before police arrived.

Have been reading all day, but actually had to log in to say thanks for saying what I have been thinking all day!

I'm still speechless. I remember when Amanda & Gina went missing and I never dreamed they would be found alive after all this time. How bittersweet it must be for Amanda to be freed right before Mother's Day only to learn her mother has passed. Gina's family must be devastated to discover that this monster wasn't a stranger to many of them.

Speaking of monsters, this man doesn't look like one. His home doesn't look like a dungeon. His Facebook portrays him as a proud father & grandfather. Evil should not be able to blend in with the rest of us so seamlessly. This is the sort of thing that terrifies me as a parent. Three siblings, at least one presenting a kind face to the world, were able to carry out the most evil of deeds for over a decade in what appears to be a decent neighborhood without raising suspicions. How do you guard against something like that? How do we combat that which looks so normal?

Vasportsmom, The area they were in is very rough. I wouldnt walk there in the daytime let alone the night. I'm a brave person but whoa! Places are torn down, markings all over the buildings. The good people are stuck there, its sad. The area the girls came from is not a whole lot better. Somewhat neater but rough. They were both taken from around w.105 and Lorain Ave.. I just thank God they are all alive. I dont think we will hear much about the children as Ohio is strict on that.I am just so thankful!:please: :seeya:

the first picture reminds me...
when i was house hunting, my realtor showed me a house once that had a door from the kitchen into the basement. there was a lock latch towards the top of the door on the OUTSIDE. the basement was very small and very dark (dark red/black walls). talk about creepy. WTF would one have a latch/lock on an interior door like that?? my realtor was a retired cop and we agreed that it was very suspect.

You mean the lock was on the kitchen side of the door? If so, I have that in my house, to prevent my preschooler from going into the basement. Nothing creepy about it (except our basement is unfinished and barely 6 ft high and therefor creepy by default lol). My washer and dryer are down there... poor me.

Trip to Cleveland to treat Charles to a night on the town...

Michelle's story really tugs at my heart.... Just feel like her family didn't fight enough for her. I truly hope her mother is being honest about searching for her. I just don't understand no reports on her and mom moving off to another state. I hope her story doesn't fall between the cracks in all this. She deserves just as much as the other two. Hope she finds healing and safety in a true family member who will help her and not just in it for the media..... JMO

It is scary to think this insane story has happened like a dozen times in recent history and it makes you wonder if there are any other missing children in basements :(

Of course there are. I believe 100% that there are many captive ' missing' children and adults all over the country . It's just a matter of who and where.

A latch lock up high doesn't concern me when it leads to the basement. We had a house with that to prevent children from opening the door and falling down the stairs. We will probably do the same in the house we are buying as we don't want the kids falling down the stairs. Now a padlock on a door gives me cause for concern.

All 3 women watched TV last year as investigators dug up a Cleveland backyard looking for Amanda's body based on a tip from an inmate.

(I'm not sure how he is getting his info) but there's more details on his twitter.

I don't think his "sources" should be blabbing all this personal, horrific information the girls are telling investigators to a reporter who blasts it out on twitter. It is wrong. The girls should be allowed to tell their own stories on their own time if they choose. It is just sensationalizing their nightmare.

Upstream someone said michele knight said something about other girls before her .... or something. Did Michele give a statement today ? I was AFK for a couple of hours, sorry to not be able to keep up ! tia

yes...it had a lock on it, but was not locked when we were seeing the house which was not empty. the basement was really small and again very dark. no washer/dryer down there. it was just a dark red/black pit. i didn't explore to see if there were any hidden doors or places but it was a much much much smaller footprint than the floor above. more like a cellar i suppose. but it was not a place one would hang out. there was just a chair and no other furniture or TV or anything. i got to the bottom and quickly went back up. lol there were no kids living in that house. i saw no kids toys and the bedrooms were not decorated for kids.....but in reality that could mean nothing.

you are right, it could have been nothing, but it was so out of place w/ the rest of the super nice upgraded house. it could have just been me and my imagination.

Same here. I have pad locks on the basement - the carriage house (it's outside so .. it's more because my neighbors and small children), shed and wine cellar. Lots of small children come over in my family and play at the house, I don't want anyone getting hurt or sued for that matter. That's probably why it wasn't suspect.

again, let me state that I must be a horrible *****.
if I went to my parents house and there were padlocks on various doors, I would demand to know what was in there or break in myself! i would not let it go until i had access because that is NOT normal behavior!! that is a clear sign something is just wrong!

i just am suspect of odd behavior and always have to get to the bottom of it.

my parents telling me "you aren't allowed in there" means "i must go in there"

My house has sliding locks at the top of several doors. They were there when we bought it. We have always assumed that the locks were intended to keep small children from accidentally getting out of the house or into an area with stored chemicals. IMO, there can be a very good reason to have such locks.

And my mother, who was terrified of intruders had several rooms that one could accidentally lock oneself into. Truly annoying, but an innocent enough reason behind it.

JMO, OMO, and MOO.

Somehow I had a feeling this kind of stuff would come out. Poor Michelle my heart truly breaks for her. Dear Lord let her find peace and healing from the life she has endured.

It sounds like her life has been tragic from the start (and the lives of her siblings and child). I pray this can be a new beginning for her as well as the other two women.

I'm *that* mom. I'm terrified of intruders. I've lived through a horrific home invasion. Locks are my best friend. Every window has a dow rod in it. I'm shocked I've not designed a panic room at this point.

Maybe I should just invest in therapy and xanax lol

Yeah it would. That's exactly what they did when they were trying to find the Boston bomber who was on the loose.

In Boston they knew the suspect was injured, on foot, and still in the area. There was no way of knowing that Amanda, Michelle, and Gina were still anywhere near Cleveland.
