When someone puts themselves in a public position and speaks out on issues, they should be well educated on the subject.

They are not going to get and maintain support from the public if they themselves, don't practice what they preach or spread false information.

If a person relies only on religious publications to get their information and fails to educate themselves with the huge amount of medical, statistical and other fact based data that exists, then they shouldn't be standing on a platform where they lead others with their hypocrisy, whether that hypocrisy is blind or not.

They should be called out and taken down from public position.

If a person is in a public position, they are suppose to be helping people, not hurting them.

Participating and spreading false, misleading information about sexual assault is a great disservice to the victims in this case and all others.

Their words and actions contribute to the problem. They don't help prevent it.

1. The 17-year-old neighbor of Jenise Wright wasn’t arrested until Aug. 9, but he had caught the attention of investigators several days before, according to court documents filed in Kitsap Superior Court.

2. The details of Jessica's final hours are known only by her killer. But documents, court testimony, interviews with prosecutors and newly released videotaped statements from Sigg outline the intersection of a troubled 17-year-old and a happy girl just after she left her home at 8:35 a.m.

Okay, both these guys were 17 year olds who molested YOUNG GIRLS. Do we believe for a moment that they can be "cured"? I realize Josh was a bit younger, but by 14, most kids know:
At least a BIT about sex,
That you don't mess with your siblings
About masturbation (often discovered on their own, by accident)
He was NOT "a child himself". He was:
Old enough to legally work part time outside the home
Smart enough to know NOT to touch his oldest (nearest in age) sister
Dumb enough not to stop the FIRST time they told on him.

If you guys have already seen this video, I apologize in advance. It is one that I personally had never seen

There are so many countries where child brides is common. The child sex industry is out in the open. And many societies tend to blame the victim and protect the abuser. It's all over the world. Rampant.

I agree with that, but isn't it against the law? Just like here in the US it is rampant, but it is illegal.

Thank you dog hair for the Elizabeth smart article! Someone up thread postulated that maybe the Duggers did not know it was wrong, and I have to say that they were the ones proselytizing the moral values that made themselves stand out to be so much more "faithful and pure" than the rest of society. Methinks they doth protest too much! Society might have forgiven them if they came clean, admitted their mistakes (can we talk lack of supervision?) followed the laws, and sought appropriate services for the perpetrator and victims. Instead, they lied, cheated, and attempted to cover up everything for their own financial and public persona benefit. Wolves in sheepskin clothing hiding behind the "godlike image" they have foolishly attempted to portray. Personally, I never respected this family before (because of the patriarchal values), but those who bought into this lifestyle as "wholesome" must be struggling just as devout Catholics had to come to terms with priests sexually abusing children and covering it up.

I hear what you're saying.

But I think what people are really upset about is the hypocrisy and insensitivity to the girls by going on national television after these events happened within the family.

I think most people understand the molestation situation could, potentially, happen in any family. That's an unfortunate truth. And I think many of us, if we're honest, don't know what we would do if confronted with molestation committed by our child against our other children and a friend. I for one don't even want to think about it, let alone make a hypothetical decision on how to react.

It's the COVERUP, the HYPOCRISY, and the lack of apparent support for the GIRLS.

I just can't get over that they became a reality tv family and made those kids be in front of the camera while the serious problem was never addressed or acknowledged. That decision - to go on tv while preaching purity - is what makes me lose all respect for the family.

I really liked your comment, but I think they feel they addressed it. Having this happen doesn't change your beliefs and I would imagine you wouldn't want what one child did to affect the lives of the entire family forever. I do see how some feel they're being hypocritical.

They know it is wrong, or they wouldnt have addressed it at all. The position the Duggars are taking is that they feel they had Josh punished, they had him do penance (in that they had him confess and apologize) and they permitted themselves and their children to be questioned regarding it in 2006.

Note that they didnt permit Josh to be questioned.

Even if nothing else happened that would prove the hypocrisy of the world they live in. They provided a non punative closed environment for him to confess his sin. When the real deal rolled through the door, they shut it down.

Where they jump the shark for me is that they pursued their secular goals anyway...to the potential (now actual) detriment of the victims and the predator. They appeared on a reality show and they forced themselves into the public limelight.

They chose this course of action, they put themselves here eyes wide open and they cannot cry foul. Well they can do it, but no one in their right mind should listen.

Jmvho.

At the end of the day, again imvho, they dont stand for anything. It is a sham, a game, all form no substance that had a really good run and netted them millions.

Bye Bye.

I hope the non family member considers her legal options.

OK, I know this is probably against the rules... but... initially I thought the non-family victim was their cousin. Just now that I have read the Josh and Anna website, specifically "how we met", it seems the Kellers (Anna's family) stayed with the Duggars several times over the years prior to the courtship. I also noted that he BEGAN the courtship with a ring and a marriage proposal. I now wonder if this COULD HAVE BEEN because she was his non-family victim, and "making it right" with her family could have included "making an honest woman of her" by marrying her, since he had tarnished her halo ("purity").

Why would a man start a courtship with a ring and a marriage proposal? If you begin a courtship in this family, does that mean, even if you can't stand the person you have to stay with him or her?

Josh and Anna's website is back up

These people are so tone deaf. They really need to retire to a private life now.

Jmvho.

Their show was a ministry to them. They felt they were evangelizing to the world through their example of faith and family. Which is why this thing is so doubly horrible.

Josh Duggar did not start his courtship with a marriage proposal. That came several months later.

WHOA!!! Now that is someone who could get serious book deal.....
