Elizabeth Johnson and Casey Anthony in court today: mother of Gabriel Johnson and Caylee Anthony share similarities (photos, videos)
On January - 25 - 2010
<snipped>
Elizabeth Johnson and Casey Anthony have been compared by many across the nation. Both women are young mothers whose children disappeared and seemingly showed no emotional response to the fact that their children were gone. Elizabeth Johnson is the mother of missing 8-month-old Tempe, Arizona boy, Gabriel Johnson. Casey Anthony is the mother of Caylee Anthony, who was 2-years-old at the time of her disappearance. Her skeletal remains were discovered on December 13, 2008. Both Elizabeth Johnson and Casey Anthony had court appearances today: Elizabeth for child abuse and Casey Anthony for check fraud.

Elizabeth Johnson plead not guilty to charges of child abuse, conspiracy to commit custodial interference, custodial interference, and kidnapping. Her next court appearance will be in March. Elizabeth Johnson reportedly sent a text message to Gabriel Johnson’s father, Logan McQueary, stating that she had killed Gabriel. Upon further inquiry by law enforcement, she said that she gave Gabriel away to a couple that she met at a park one day. The search for Gabriel Johnson is ongoing.

Logan McQueary met with Tempe investigators Monday, handing over all text messages and recorded conversations he has had with both his ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Johnson and persons of interest Tammi and Jack Smith.

In Scottsdale on Monday, Tammi Smith revealed that Elizabeth Johnson called her from jail on Friday and tried to lure her into some type of confession.

"Basically, she just started yelling at me. She said, 'You're the one who set this up' and I said 'What? What are you talking about?' And I was really freaked out by that because I didn't think she would just tell a lie like that," Smith said.

Both Smith and Johnson have been caught in lies during the investigation, but Smith said appears Johnson is now trying to spread the blame.

Tempe detectives say they are holding out hope the 8-month-old boy is still alive and won't discuss details of the ongoing investigation.

"Signs that Gabriel is alive are dwindling, that's why we need more tips to come in," said Tempe Sergeant Steve Carbajal.

The boy's 23-year-old mother, Elizabeth Johnson, pleaded not guilty in court Monday to charges of conspiracy to commit custodial interference and custodial interference.

She also faces kidnapping and child abuse charges in connection with the disappearance of her 8-month-old son.

Missing baby's mom could face charges in Texas
1/26/20 Last Update: 4:45 pm
<snipped>
Local prosecutors have not previously discussed the case on camera, but agreed to answer News 4 WOAI's questions about the case Tuesday.

News 4 WOAI broke the news last week that police plan to search a landfill near Interstate 10 and Foster Road because Gabriel's mom told the boy's father she killed the baby, stuffed his body in a diaper bag, and threw it in a dumpster. However, Elizabeth Johnson has given conflicting stories about what happened to her son. She also said she gave the baby to a couple she met here in San Antonio. So, police have to investigate both claims. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Johnson may face charges here.

"We don't have any cases filed in our office yet by the police department," explained Cliff Herberg of the Bexar County District Attorney's Office. "They're still investigating. But, of course, if there was evidence that determined some sort of crime occurred here in Bexar County, well then, charges could be filed."

Elizabeth Johnson pleaded not guilty Monday to the charges filed against her. Prosecutors in Arizona plan to hold a news conference concerning the case Tuesday afternoon.

Elizabeth Johnson's Ex-Boyfriend Reveals Her Texts To Police Before He Heads To Texas

On Tuesday, he actively joined the search for his son, dubbed Baby Gabriel, by gathering supplies for his own road trip to Texas. He plans to retrace the GPS route of his former girlfriend, Elizabeth Johnson.

But before he can leave, Tempe investigators need his help to build their case of conspiracy between person-of-interest Tammi Smith and Johnson.

Tempe police made copies of all of McQueary's phone recordings and text messages, including this passage from Elizabeth on Dec. 27.

Logan McQueary showed us her text that read: "You will never see Gabriel again. I made sure of that. And you can spend the rest of of your pathetic life wondering about him. You will never find me. I'm already boarding a plane out of the country. When I'm safe, I'll email you the exact location of dead Gabriel's little blue body, if the garbage don't come first. This is what liars like you deserve."

As for Smith, McQueary turned down her offer for a public apology, and thinks after her phone call with Elizabeth Johnson over the weekend, Tammi is really the one pulling the strings.

"It kind of sounded like Tammi kind of said you need to watch your mouth and be careful what you said. Maybe she said that for a reason," said McQueary.

A spokeswoman for Republic Services, which owns and operates the Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio, confirmed that they are using their expertise in managing landfills to help police. Peg Mulloy said landfills are highly engineered and well planned out. “Things are so well engineered that we can hone in on a date and a neighborhood,” said Mulloy, referring to locating a specific cell of trash in the landfill. Mulloy confirmed that waste mangers at the landfill have identified a possible search cell based on information provided to them by police.

San Antonio is heading up the missing persons investigation as it relates to Gabriel because he was last seen in that city. San Antonio police will not speculate if or when a landfill search will start, but sources have told CBS 5 News that it could be sometime in the next two days. San Antonio police said Monday that they had one more tip to follow-up on before making a decision on a landfill search. Tuesday night, police would not say if that tip materialized.

'Optimism' rapidly diminishing that Baby Gabriel will be found alive

Detectives in Arizona are working very closely with law enforcement in Texas to turn the focus of the investigation to a landfill in San Antonio, Texas located near the two hotels where the baby's mother, Elizabeth Johnson, stayed in late December.

Sources tell 3TV the area where the landfill is has been cordoned off as law enforcement prepares to search the area. 3TV has learned the trash from both hotels where Johnson stayed would eventually be dumped in that landfill.

Investigators are starting the preparations for the search and plan to take cadaver dogs to the area.

Jack and Tammi Smith, the Scottsdale couple who at one point planned to adopt Gabriel, remain persons of interest.

More details on this investigation should come to light throughout the week as investigators prepare to concentrate their search for Baby Gabriel at the San Antonio landfill.

Missing baby's mother pleads not guilty

Elizabeth Johnson appeared in court by video from the Maricopa County Jail. She was dressed in jail stripes.

Johnson spoke only to give her name and birthdate. A "not guilty" plea was entered for her to charges of kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.

Meanwhile, former FBI special agent and ABC News consultant Brad Garrett said police need to keep trying to talk with Johnson "because that's going to be the key. It's going to give you more information even if she doesn't tell the truth... You have to basically convince her it's in maybe her best interests and the child's best interests to talk to you."

Garrett said police should retrace their steps.

"You may have to go back to the hotel again, pull the records of people that were staying at the hotel. Supposedly other people saw her in San Antonio with Gabriel. All of those people need to be found and interviewed."

Garrett said police also need to look at cellphones and other communications by Johnson, as well as track her car.

Father of missing baby: 'I'm going to San Antonio'

Police still consider Jack and Tammi Smith "persons of interest" but have not been able to link them with enough evidence to arrest them. Meanwhile, Logan McQueary, Gabriel's Father, is preparing to drive to San Antonio and retrace the route Elizabeth took. McQueary plans to pass out flyers in hopes someone may have seen something or knows something, "I feel like I have no other option, I got to get out and do something," said McQueary.

On Tuesday McQueary said he made copies of all text messages sent to his phone by Elizabeth and the Smith's.

McQueary showed us one message he says was sent to him by the Smith's on December 22nd, it reads: "Can we get together tomorrow morning to talk with you and your dad? I'm afraid she'll be gone forever, cause she doesn't want to go to jail for kidnapping. She Doesn't trust u or ur dad. The only way she'll come back is if my attorney faxes the signed papers to her so she won't get in trouble, and Gabriel b w/us".

That was just a few days after Tempe Police say Elizabeth took off with Gabriel.

Texas police deny searching landfill for Tempe baby
Jan. 27, 2010 11:11 AM
<snipped>
San Antonio police insist that there is no impending search of a landfill there for the body of missing baby Gabriel Johnson despite a media frenzy surrounding the Tessman Road landfill off Interstate 10 in Texas.

The company that owns the landfill worked with San Antonio police about two weeks ago to identify where in the landfill police might want to search for the body, though a spokeswoman there said the company does not know if the police plan to move forward with any searches.

"We're just as much on hold as everyone else is," said Peg Mulloy, spokeswoman for the Phoenix-based Republic Services, Inc. "We've identified certain sections (where the trash of interest might be) and closed those off and we're not placing any more waste there. But we don't know if they're going to do a search, or if they do one, when it would be."

Phoenix and San Antonio television stations have been reporting conflicting information about whether has been a search, or if there will be a search. A spokeswoman for the San Antonio Police said they have been trying to quash the rumor for nearly a week. She said no search is under way, but declined to say whether there would be a search in the future.

Search for Tempe baby? Part of Texas landfill cordoned off
1/27/10 Last Update: 4:11 pm

Managers of a San Antonio, Texas landfill say a portion of the facility has been cordoned off as an area that might be searched for the body of a Tempe baby missing since last month.

Spokeswoman Peg Mulloy of Phoenix-based Republic Services says part of the firm's Tessman Road Landfill is cordoned off. She says landfill managers identified where police may look based on where and when Gabriel was last seen on December 26.

But San Antonio police said Wednesday they were not searching the landfill and wouldn't say if one is planned. They cited the integrity of their investigation into the disappearance of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson of Tempe, Arizona.

Tempe detectives say they are holding out hope that Gabriel is still alive and won't discuss details of the ongoing investigation.

"Signs that Gabriel is alive are dwindling, that's why we need more tips to come in," said Tempe Sergeant Steve Carbajal.

UPDATED: Sheriff Arpaio: 'Elizabeth Johnson Isolated'
Mother Accused Of Kidnapping Her Son Spends Her Days Alone
POSTED: 9:16 pm MST January 27, 2010
UPDATED: 6:57 am MST January 28, 2010
<snipped>
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Wednesday that Elizabeth Johnson's public persona is very different from her demeanor behind bars.

"She's been quiet, cooperative, not a problem in our jail. Maybe she's got a dual personality," said Arpaio.

But in the Estrella Jail, Johnson has little opportunity for trouble.

"We have her in a separate cell, isolated from other prisoners, for her own safety. She can come out once, one hour, to take a shower by herself," said Arpaio.

Arpaio says Johnson is decked out in the traditional pink underwear and striped uniform. She is allowed visitors. But she gets no special treatment.

When it comes to her trial, the Sheriff compared her case to others in Maricopa County where suspects were charged with murder without the victim's body every being discovered.

"You know, I think there's only about four cases in history, and we have two of them. The David Anthony case where he's on death row. We have another one right now, waiting to be extradited, that we investigated here, without the body," said Arpaio.

But until that day comes, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has Elizabeth Johnson on a tight leash.

"She hasn't been causing any problems, but you never know," said Arpaio.

UPDATED: Child Advocate: Landfill Search Long Overdue
Baby Gabriel Johnson Missing Since December

San Antonio police have still not said whether or not they will search a landfill in their quest to find 8-month-old Valley boy Gabriel Johnson who has missing for more than a month.

Mark Palmer, the executive director of Jessica's Law Now, a child advocacy group, said the landfill is one of the first places investigators should have searched.

"It should have been done right away, immediately," said Palmer.

Managers of the Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio said they are standing by ready to help police. A spokeswoman for the company confirmed that they are using their expertise in managing landfills to help police.

“Things are so well engineered that we can hone in on a date and a neighborhood,” said Mulloy, referring to locating a specific cell of trash in the landfill. Mulloy confirmed that waste mangers at the landfill have identified a possible search cell based on information provided to them by police.

Palmer believes the delay in the search could be blamed on manpower and funding.

Palmer believes too many parents of missing children don’t know whether their kids are dead or alive.

“We need to find this child. We need to find the facts that lead to what happened to this child in San Antonio,” said Palmer.
