Alice Springs in shock over deaths

5:54pm October 22, 2015

Alice Springs appears to have closed ranks after the revelation that bodies found in NSW and South Australia were that of former resident Karlie Jade Pearce and her daughter Khandalyce.

On Thursday, friends of the family declined to comment to media, with one man saying the news had "hit too close to home".

Sharon Wilson, believed to be a cousin of Ms Pearce-Stevenson, posted on Facebook: "We have chosen to take this time to grieve, not to answer speculation or hear say ... We know the truth about our on going search for Karlie and Khandles and that's all that matters."

But another neighbour said she had "no sympathy for the family" for not trying harder to find Ms Pearce-Stevenson once she left town.

"Sympathy for losing their child, yes, but how could they have let so much time go by without reporting her missing or trying to find out where she was?

"No matter what my kids did I'd be trying to find out where they were, even if they didn't know I was doing it."

Murder victim Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was sociable and popular, say friends

Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson, whose body was not identified until five years after her remains were discovered in the NSW Belanglo forest, has been described as a loving person with many friends.

A woman known as Athena, who went to Alice Springs high school with Pearce-Stevenson has remembered a friendly and popular young woman.

“She was very kind, loving, she had heaps of friends, she had more friends than enemies if anything,” Athena told ABC’s AM program.

“She would never walk past without saying hello. She’d always say hello, we’d always have a little yarn here and there. She was a good girl.”

Wynarka murder: Male suspect identified

OCTOBER 22, 201510:55PM

A MAN serving time in a NSW jail is one of several suspects in the disappearance and murder of Alice Springs mother and daughter Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Pearce.

A day after police revealed the identities of the pair — a two-year old found in a suitcase near Wynarka in South Australia in July and her 20-year-old mother found in Belanglo State Forest in 2010 — investigators are looking into the movements of the man who is understood to be awaiting sentence on unrelated charges.

A police source confirmed to the Daily Telegraph the man was being looked into while officially police said they were keeping an open mind.

Police hunt for Karlie’s car

OCTOBER 22, 2015 10:55PM

THE car that Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter Khandalyce were travelling around Australia in has emerged as a major focus as detectives hunt their killer or killers.

A major focus of the investigation is finding the Holden Commodore that Karlie and her daughter were last seen driving in when they were pulled over by police near Coober Pedy.

Detectives cannot yet establish if the murders occurred at the same time or exactly how they died.
“It is a rapidly moving investigation,’’ NSW Homicide Squad Detective Superintendent Michael Willing said.
“We are working with the SA police to try establish the circumstances of both deaths.’’

Girl in suitcase: Detectives identify a main suspect in killings of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and daughter Khandalyce

October 23, 2015 - 8:09AM

A man who knew Ms Stevenson-Pearce as a teenager said she was a nice girl who met a horrific end.
The man, who did not want to be named, said he knew her and a close friend from parties when they were younger.
"I know she had her kid and then her and Andrew (the child's father) had troubled times," he said.
He said he didn't know she had been missing until police revealed the breakthrough on Wednesday.
"That's why the story shocked me yesterday," he said.
Ms Pearce-Stevenson's step-brother, Luke Povey, still lives in Alice Springs and works as a glazier.
Her step-father is also to believed to live in the town, along with extended relatives.

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson: Police search homes and look for Commodore station wagon in mother-daughter murder investigation

Details of Karlie's car revealed

The car murdered mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was seen driving before her death has become a focal point of the police investigation into her and her daughter Khandalyce's murders.

Police also revealed details of the car Karlie was driving, described as a red or maroon 1986 VL Holden Commodore station wagon.

The car was originally registered in the Northern Territory and in the years since Karlie and Khandalyce went missing it was re-registered in NSW under another person's name.

The person who re-registered the car has been interviewed by police and cleared as a suspect.

Police are investigating who gave or sold the car to that person and it is forming a major line of inquiry for investigators.

They said they did not know who currently owned the car or where it was.

Police keeping cause of death of mum, daughter under wraps

NSW Police said they were speaking to a number of people they believed to have actual knowledge of what happened to Karlie and Khandalyce.

In an off-camera briefing, a police spokeswoman confirmed some of those people were convicted of violent crimes and were currently serving time in NSW prisons.

Police would not reveal how many inmates they had identified as potential suspects and interviewed, nor have they revealed how the pair died, except to say it was violent and deliberate.

A police spokeswoman said detectives were keeping the manner in which Karlie and Khandalyce died close to their chest because it was a fact only their killer would know.

Girl in suitcase: Police hopeful of an early arrest in 'brutal murders' of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and daughter Khandalyce

October 23, 2015 - 4:24PM

Police are now almost certain single mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was murdered in or near Belanglo State Forest, south of Sydney, but are yet to determine the year of her death. They do not know whether her young daughter Khandalyce Pearce - whose body was discovered alongside the Karoonda Highway, in South Australia, in July - was also murdered in the same location.

Police are exploring the possibility that more than one person was connected to the murders of Ms Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce, who was aged between two and four.

Police are confident that those responsible for the murders are not from Ms Pearce-Stevenson's home town of Alice Springs. She is more likely to have met or befriended the killer or killers while travelling between 2006 and 2010, police say.

More than one prisoner in NSW is considered to be a person of interest. It is understood that some of those prisoners are currently serving time for violent crimes committed in NSW.

The homes searched in South Australia and the ACT are believed to belong to people associated with the unconfirmed sighting of Ms Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce at an ACT shopping centre in December 2008.
None of the homes are associated with the prison suspects.

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson murdered in Belanglo State Forest: police

7:00pm October 23, 2015

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was likely violently murdered in or around Belanglo State Forest, with detectives hopeful of making an arrest after turning up more evidence in house searches in South Australia and ACT.

Investigators believe they've spoken to people with "actual knowledge" of what happened to Karlie and her daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce and believe multiple people may have been involved.

Police are almost certain the young Alice Springs mum, was killed in NSW and put her time of death around December 2008, nearly two years before her remains were found.

But where and when Khandalyce died and how her remains came to be found near a suitcase alongside a South Australian highway 1200km away and five years later is still a mystery.

Karlie and Khandalyce: Police question jailed paedophile over killings

October 23, 2015 3:03pm
MATTHEW BENNS, MARK MORRI, JANET FIFE-YEOMANS and ASHLEE MULLANY

A KNOWN paedophile is being questioned by NSW homicide detectives over the double murder of mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter Khandalyce as police said they were hopeful of an early arrest.

The man was taken from minimum security in Cessnock jail on Wednesday and interviewed by officers* at a nearby police station before being returned and put in the maximum security wing.

He has been in jail since early 2013, leading to the possibility more than one person was involved in the murders.

The paedophile has previously been in the NSW jail system for child sex offences but he is currently serving four years, six months for other offences and was spoken to by police just days after they identified the bodies of the mother and daughter.

THREE children were referred to the state’s child protection agency as a result of police investigations to identify murdered toddler Khandalyce Pearce, The Advertiser understands.

The discovery of the child’s remains in a suitcase near Wynarka prompted about 1300 phone calls to Crime Stoppers.

SA Police Major Crime officer-in-charge Detective Superintendent Des Bray has said some of those calls led police to check on 180 children who were “potentially at risk”.

The majority were found to be safe but it is understood three children were later the subject of reports to the Child Abuse Report Line.

'She was a beautiful girl ': Ex-boyfriend of young mum found dead in Belanglo Forest reveals he was 'gutted' to find out about her murder - and how he had followed the 'girl in a suitcase' mystery with interest

PUBLISHED: 12:11 EST, 25 October 2015 | UPDATED: 12:33 EST, 25 October 2015

A man who once dated single mother Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson said he was 'gutted' after learning that she and her two-year-old daughter Khandalyce had suffered violent deaths.
Kassidi Lally met Ms Pearce-Stevenson in Alice Springs and the pair briefly dated when she was around 17 or 18-years-old, several years before her remains were found in Belanglo State Forest.
Mr Lally learned of the devastating news when his current girlfriend - who followed the 'baby in the suitcase' murder - told him the single mother and her daughter had been formally identified.
'I was gutted. I was in complete shock. I didn't say anything. I couldn't really put a sentence together or anything,'

Mr Lally, who last saw Ms Pearce-Stevenson at a bus stop after she had fallen pregnant with her daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce, said his former flame had always been an 'awesome chick'.
'She was always really bright and bubbly, funny, cheeky ... she was just a beautiful girl really'
He said the news had rocked the close-knit regional town of Alice Springs, whose residents could not believe the mother and daughter had been 'dumped' more than '1,000 kilometres apart'.

How UOW's Dr Susan Hayes assisted in police search for 'Angel'

By LISA WACHSMUTH Oct. 24, 2015, 4:03 p.m

The cold case of the woman dubbed ‘Angel’ has haunted University of Wollongong facial anthropologist Dr Susan Hayes.

So when police this week publicly identified the woman whose skeletal remains were discovered in Belanglo State Forest in 2010 as Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson, Dr Hayes felt a sense of peace.

Dr Hayes - currently on an archaelogical dig on a remote Indonesian island - said the identification would also allow her to analyse her unique facial approximation technique.

‘’From what I saw (of Karlie’s photo) I think there are some aspects that worked well and others that could have been done differently,’’ she said.

‘’… But although the identification of ‘Angel’ is going to be very helpful at an academic level, the most helpful thing is that Karlie and her little daughter will finally get to go home.’’

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson's former boyfriend 'shocked' by news of murder

Natalie Whiting reported this story on Friday, October 23, 2015 06:16:00

KASSIDI LALLY: We dated those for those few months, and I didn't really see her or talk to her or anything, didn't keep in contact or anything because I was always working. The last time I saw her, I drove past her at a bus stop I think in town in Alice, at the main bus station, and that's when she was pregnant - she looked pretty far along, too, so.
