Oh, I misunderstood. You meant why set up task force or strike force at all. Your guess is as good as mine. The only thing I can think of is that investigators have been drawn from a number of different squads, eg; Homicide, Fraud and, possibly Sex Crimes, in this case. (I know they brought investigators from Sex Crimes and Homicide together under Strike Force Rosann in the case of William Tyrrell's suspected abduction recently.)

I know Task Force Mallee is/was the name of the team responsible for the investigation in SA. I suppose you would have to find out what their responsibilities are/were. I'm not sure if the NSWPOL Strike Force has/had the same or a different name but the same would apply to them.

I am under the impression there is now a Joint Strike Force formed between SA and NSWPOL since the DNA from Karlie's and Khandalyce's remains were matched.

It's all a little confusing.

Detectives from SAPOL's Major Crime Task Force Mallee, in coordination with NSW Police State Crime Command's Strike Force Malaya, continue their inquiries into the murders.

NSW Police Force established Strike Force Hixson in August 2010 following the discovery of the skeletal remains of a young woman in the Belanglo State Forest.
South Australia Police established Task Force Malee in July 2015 following the discovery of the skeletal remains of a little girl in a suitcase on Karoona Highway, Wynarka.

Detective Superintendent Mick Willing, NSW Police, SCC Homicide Squad Commander and head of Strike Force Malaya

"Police can reveal the bank account of murdered woman Karlie Pearce-Stevenson has been accessed hundreds of occasions since she was last seen in late 2008.

Detectives from SA Police's Task Force Mallee and the NSW Police's Strike Force Malaya, set up to investigate the murders of Khandalyce Pearce and her mother Karlie, have so far tracked transactions across South Australia, New South Wales, Northern Territory and the ACT.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but why the name change from NSW Strike Force Hixson to Malaya ?

Khandalyces likely killer has been identified detectives say.
The delay in prosecution is due to uncertainty as to which state.

DH has been described by neighbours and relatives as having itinerant lifestyle since breaking up with the mother of his children around 2 decades ago.
His son he has had nothing to do with DH since he left when he was just 3 years old.
HP was viewed as the dominant partner by former neighbours and relatives.

Karlies card was used just a feww hundred meters from where HP was having rehab in the weeks following the death....at a BP service station.

Does the article hint at who is suspected, Soso?

To answer my own question - no. The article gives no hint about a suspect.
It doesn't name a police source for this story either, which is odd.

Interesting that this article says that Khandalyce was last seen at Marion SA, not in Canberra as other reports have stated.
Also, it stresses again that HP has not been charged with any offence.

Kandalyce was last seen with her mother at Marion SA.

BBM: Strike Force Hixon was set up to investigate the murder of the then unidentified girl found in the Belanglo State Forest in 2010. The expertise of specialised squads would have been working together to identify Angel, as she became known.

Once Karlie was identified the investigation took a different turn. Strike Force Malaya was set up to investigate the murder of Karlie. Strike Force Malaya may well embody some of the same detectives who were originally part of Strike Force Hixon as well as other specialised squads that weren't part of Strike Force Hixon.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, Makara. So I guess that means a joint strike force would just mean that SAPOL's Task Force Mallee and NSWPOL's Strike Force Malaya are working together.

Do you know the why police set up task or strike forces for certain crimes?

Thanks for paraphrasing, soso. I thought this might be the case.

From the comments, it seems someone may not be as demure as they appear on camera. I suspected as much.

Something has been bothering me about HP's behaviour. When she was spotted in the park with her lawyers, she took off in her chair at lightning speed, yet the very next day (after her beer run!) when she went to the police station, she had someone wheel her as she almost assumed the embodiment of The Madonna; pose complete with a child in her arms. I never understood why she would bring her child into that situation, let alone make them wait there while she was questioned. Surely, she would find someone to babysit them, even it meant pushing her own wheelchair, if necessary, or organising with police to park in their parking area; if she was concerned about reporters after being spotted by them the day before and having them camped outside her house.

Once inside the police station, she was reported as laughing and joking with investigators. Then the drama on her way home with the wheelchair-pusher and child(!) having to run the press gauntlet again while she was chauffeured by a car full of detectives. The final smile through the window of their car was the end for me. I'm trying not to be unkind here, but considering the nature of the crimes she is allegedly on the periphery of, it all made me feel a little ill.

It also makes me wonder if she is manipulating, or egging on if you will (sorry for the pun :) ), the wheelchair-pusher and designated egg-thrower? Again, not to be unkind, but he doesn't strike me as the sharpest tool in the shed.

If I was innocently involved in a case like this I would be in constantly in shock, I think, not behaving in an almost orchestrated manner. What do you (and other WSers) think of my observations over the past few weeks and my conclusions?

When a major crime requires investigation from various squads, a strike force or task force is set up. In Karlie's case there would be select members of the Homicide, Drug and Fraud Squads all working together under the umbrella of Strike Force Malaya. Detective Superintendent Mick Willing, NSW Homicide Squad Commander, is head of Strike Force Malaya and coordinates and manages all of the squads within the strike force.

Thanks Makara, that does make sense. I hadn't even thought about it all until someone brought it up earlier in the thread.

Last sighting of Kandles in Marion SA. Is that where the shopping centre photos were taken?

Not being able to determine place of death is tricky. I was wondering how they would ever figure that out. Perhaps something similar would occur like the Baden Clay leaf environmental analysis.

There may need to be some legislation passed to SA and NSW criminal codes to sort out a jurisdiction issue and make it retrospective. Politicians could get it done in one sitting!

Whereby if a murder scene can not be determined the State in which the majority of remains are found has the call? Something like that?

I wonder why he will be appearing by video link on January 28. Is that usual ? Maybe they are trying to avoid the lynch mob mentality outside the court?

It's increasingly common because Skype is a bunch cheaper than guards armored vans and the risk he will enjoy the cameras and crowds.

I've been in court when they've done it, its usual with someone who is already in custody for another crime and is just answering a charge or a mention.

Actual Trial though, they drag em in. Major crime at least.

The reasons Police have Strike/Task Forces and name them are

1. they want the public and the perp to know there is a dedicated concentrated ongoing active investigation into what has been identified as a Major Crime and this investigation will not cease until an end is found. Also, usually only employed for Complex Organised Crime, not piffling stuff like domestic murders. Basically, a show of intention and force.

2. the Taskforce itself benefits - bonding - different detectives from different areas or departments are suddenly a team, working together for one goal. Very powerful. Detectives may even be from different areas in the same city, bought together, not necessarily interstate. But they become part of a defined team working on a Major Crime.

3. Its just easier to use around HQ, for example, oh he is working on Mallee, oh yes I see why he's not available etc. Easier for filing purposes, just easier all round to have a code name for a specialized operation.
