The potential "C" panel (top hexagon third from the left) could be a ginger tabby cat from behind.... not certain but kinda looks like it when you zoom in. :/

Edit: Actually now, I don't think it is specifically the "C" position... the other images aren't ordered .... besides there are.only 25 hexagons, so not enough for the full alphabet.... unless the letter that the little girl's name started with was left off...

At about 6:00 of Des Bray's interview a detailed explanation about suitcase being found.
6:48
The people who found it on the Wednesday you are referring to.
They found the suitcase and scattered remains it would not have been obvious to anyone what it was.
They went back Wednesday lets have another look they felt uncomfortable. It was then when they were poking around with a stick they realised it was human remains. They have done nothing wrong.

Sounds reasonable. They thought about it afterwards and felt something wasn't right and that they should check it again.... cannot imagine how awful they would be feeling!

Maybe the border acts as M = music which would give 26 letters.
just thinking out loud.

Was thinking that too.

Are there also 2 or 3 panels of that same material on the left, or is that the music material underneath the patchwork and those panels have come right off??

Yes, would have to be 'music' or 'notes'?

Wonder what's in the gap of the hexagons - is it the background, or something else?

Strange how the hexagons have worn like that - wonder if they were ironed on (using double sided interfacing), or glued on with a glue gun, as opposed to being stitched?

Sorry folks that I am harping on this interview but just thought I would post a few bits.
2:13 The reason for not releasing the cause of death.
If we keep that information just to investigators.
If we hear information - if somebody says so and so did this and this is how HE killed her. We will know straight away nobody knows that except the police and the killer.

How police might solve the terrible mystery of the murdered child dumped in a suitcase

“There is absolutely no evidence at this point in time that the child is Madeleine McCann … to suggest something like that at this point in time would purely be speculating to get attention,” he said.

You may be right!
BUT: The camel would be a "N" if all letters in usual order ... why? "Pumpkin" at the place in order and also "stars", "camel" not.

Definitely Holden label on RHS.

These are classed as boys wear but there is a possibility these were Angel's but really depends on the size.

The SA Police on FB replied to a comment asking if the items had been burnt, it was answered with "the fabric has degraded for a number of reasons".

Also, a few people have mentioned the pumpkin material came from a popular 80ws/90s tablecloth. Anyone else recognise it as that?

So the pumpkin and music notes fabrics are identical to what's on the quilt, but the other patches are a close likeness to the what's on the quilt.
The image of the pumpkins and the 125mm-wide border fabric featuring music notes are exactly the same as those on the original quilt and the other images are a very close likeness, Det-Supt Bray said.

Good on them for being able to identify those pictures, I certainly can't see them.

That camel patch is a bit odd, what do you think that could be behind it's tail?

Perhaps it's an alphabet quilt in another language.

Because maybe those are pyramids and there's the river Nile in the background? IDK, maybe maybe not.
