I do think they are suggesting, likely they have "off the record information" (information given by a source but not able to be stated in a story absent another official source) that is more pointed. And for certain they are withholding anything direct due to legal concerns. The UK and Australia libel and slander laws have much much lower thresholds for a plaintiff to establish than the US. It is why you don't see as much "on background" (stated but not attributed) in UK and Aus press on criminals and potential criminal cases. so Daily Mail and any Aus press is going to be careful with anything they say despite what they may believe or have been told off the record.
I agree that the reporting style is suggestive. Yes, DM Australia would much rather be safe than sorry, hence the disclaimer Imoo.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/what-are-death-cap-mushrooms-and-why-are-they-so-deadly-experts-explain/ar-AA1f4et2

Three people have died in Australia and another person is sick after accidentally [bc why would 3 ppl intentionally poison themselves over lunch?] eating what appears to be death cap mushrooms at a family meal.

The meal was prepared by Erin Patterson and served to her former parents-in-law, as well as her mother-in-law's sister and husband at her home, CNN reports. Gail Patterson, 70, and her sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, died in the hospital within days of eating the meal; Gail's 70-year-old husband, Don, died a day later. Wilkinson's husband, Ian, a 68-year-old minister, is in critical condition at a hospital.

"death cap mushrooms are considered the deadliest
toxins can't be destroyed by cooking, freezing, drying or boiling the mushrooms
Warning: the death caps have been found in California
a small portion of death cap mushrooms can kill you
attacks the liver and kidneys
liver shuts down [liver's sore, painful, swollen]
causes general gastrointestinal distress [what was Simon's distress?]"

"You may not see the vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain for six hours after you've eaten it. In the meantime, it's actually causing destruction of your liver."

Once the cramping GI pains and other symptoms began for these victims, they may have thought "food poisoning" but not "mushroom poisoning" only, by then, their liver and kidneys were already shutting down. Certainly they began experiencing crippling, dizzying, nausea.

Their bodies fought, against the odds, with all of its might in order to rid and expel the poison. Their deaths were so VERY painful as organs shut down. What Simon endured in 2022 was destructive to his GI system and also his physical body. Ian is currently enduring horrible discomfort. DC is almost always fatally destructive to soft tissue organs.

Ian Wilkinson is in critical but stable condition. Please live Ian.
It is for them that we are here.

what a horrible horrible painful death!!

I heard yesterday, on Channel 9, that 'Under Investigation' is reporting the case tomorrow night.
I guess we'll get expert opinions.

Here are the preview blurbs about the Under Investigation show tomorrow night.

Experts for this episode of the show are ....

Dr Michael Robertson, a toxicologist who was pivotal in the infamous Baden-Clay murder case in Queensland
Alex Krystic, a former Victorian Major Crime Detective and seasoned bushman
Damian Marrett, a leading private investigator and former Victorian detective who travelled to Leongatha for UI
Tamara Cavenett, a clinical psychologist who brings her expertise to this family tragedy
Mushroom specialist Dr Heike Neumeister-Kemp, one of Australia’s preeminent mycologists.

Six things that don’t stack up in mushroom death case

The mushroom lunch that killed three people and left another gravely ill is still shrouded in mystery, but several key claims will have police – and the public – scratching their heads.

Thanks, bearbear.

The six things apparently are: (paraphrased)
Where did the mushrooms that were added to the Beef Wellington come from?
Why did she get rid of the dehydrator?
Did her children attend the lunch?
Did her children eat leftovers of the stew the next night?
Is it possible to scrape away poisonous mushrooms from the Beef Wellington?
Did she eat the Beef Wellington?

('She' and 'her' being Ms Patterson, of course. Just had to change it due to necessary paraphrasing.)

unfortunately only ep can answer most of those questions, and her children, whether they were there and ate leftovers? and of course the priest, if he survives

Is it possible to scrape away poisonous mushrooms from the Beef Wellington?

Thank you, South Aussie for the bullet points.

It is impossible to scrape away the poison of the mushroom's existence that was baked in the Beef Wellington just as it would be impossible to reinsert an infant. What was done was done and cannot be undone. DC mushrooms were baked into the BW dish.

The problem w the DC mushrooms is that they hold moisture. Either the DC mushroom juices were released during baking or the potentially dried DC mushrooms absorbed moisture, by rehydrating, those juices mixed with the pate' or prosciutto [prəˈSHo͞odō] and any stuffings or shingled wrapping around the beef tenderloin, then finished with a phyllo dough crust for baking. [It is not a stew unless cut into chunks as leftovers.]

I've heard the DC mushrooms are delicious but they don't resemble the safety of buttons to me but buttons is not my first choice for the delectable dish.

JMHOO based on my common sense approach as an experienced Diva Chef in the kitchen - ;)

Did her children attend the lunch?

Apparently, police were given to understand that her kids were at the lunch, whereas we are told that EP said they were at the movies at the time. She has admitted that she lied to police initially, so maybe this was one of those lies.

Did her children eat leftovers of the stew the next night?

Police told us that EP had prepared separate meals for the kids and for herself. I guess police understood that to mean they ate those meals at the same lunch event. Then in her "leaked" statement to police she claims to have given the kids leftovers the next day.

As I've said before, I do not take as truthful anything that EP says.

yeah.
Buttons are actually tasteless, are they not?

EP says she bought the mushrooms months ago at an Asian market and added button mushrooms purchased recently for the BW dish.
Why did she get rid of the dehydrator?
EP said (paraphrased): She panicked for fear of losing her children and that is exactly what happened, in spite of tossing it. I believe this part, for sure. She panicked.
Did her children attend the lunch?
No. EP released a statement that her children were at the cinema at the time of the luncheon.
Did her children eat leftovers of the stew the next night?
Important concern to know.
Is it possible to scrape away poisonous mushrooms from the Beef Wellington?
No. See my last post.

It would be interesting to know how many of us think EP did indeed ingest the meal of BW as served to guests at her luncheon.

My vote is a resounding no! She did not ever taste that same BW. She may have made two of BWs so she could present a slice to her children later and gave leftovers to the Police bc she's potentially a psychopathic mass murderer who planned this wisely, if she had the state of mind to commit to killing them. I won't mind eating my favorite hat if she presents receipts from the hospital that indicates any source of tainted BW recipe in her system.

One theory, if she used DCs knowingly, was she dined on an accompaniment to the meal and coyly pushed aside the BW, maybe after sticking a fork in it - couldn't eat another bite. Far too full. She'd eat hers when the children did, EP may have told the guests.

Especially, if a nice fresh green leafy salad was served, or yummy mashed cauliflower potatoes, then she could easily get away without sampling the BW since she slaved like a diva in the kitchen preparing the hearty BW dish. It could wait.

BTW ~ BW is not a dish, in any stage of prep, unless after sauteeing the mushrooms or preparing liver pate' before it goes on top of the beef tenderloin, that you can sample before it is removed from the oven with the lightly browned flaky crust surrounding it. Then, it's sliced as one would a freshly baked loaf.

We don't yet know yet what all ER did. However, those are ideas that make sense to me, if she knowingly used DCs, but not saying that's what happened, of course.

I've been too scared to eat mushrooms since my night from hell. over 10 years ago,

They were supermarket mushrooms.
How very dreadful for you to vividly recall a night from hell. What happened, if you want to share? What type mushrooms were they? Was that the only food you ate so to were able to isolate the cause?

Bad bout of fp from fast food chicken that hospitalized me for 3 days eaten before arriving for a Florida vacay. Florida has better health care than my state. Had to remove the gall bladder later.

Edited to add that wifi issues posted everything in saved drafts when wifi reconnected. Sorry post was so v long.

As far as I can see the only inference that SP’s illness in 2022 was a “mystery” was that generated by the media (speculating on his Facebook post) and possibly an unnamed source.

I can’t see that SP himself has stated that it was a mystery or suspected poisoning anywhere in articles I have read.

There are plenty of reasons people can become acutely ill and need emergency treatment for intestinal problems (e.g. bowel perforation, peritonitis, sepsis).
I think this illness was probably clarified in EP’s written statement to police as she made reference to caring for SP during his recovery.

I have been reading that even edible, non-poisonous mushrooms can be "difficult to digest" to the point of making you think you've been poisoned.

Sometimes it's because people lack an enzyme. Had you had problems with mushrooms before?

I agree it's quite some reach.

A lie that EP has admitted to (as stated in the recent article) is that she initially told the police that she had dumped the dehydrator a long time ago, then later admitted that she had lied and dumped it because her ex-husband (Simon) asked her if that was what she used to poison the others.

Lies that she seems to have been caught in are:
Saying the kids were at the movies when they were at the lunch
Saying she fed the kids Beef Wellington leftovers the next night, but the others fell ill at lunchtime the next day, so why feed the kids leftovers (if she knew the others fell ill several hours prior)
She said she ate a portion of the lunch, got bad stomach cramps and diarrhoea, was put on a saline drip then transported to hospital, but the police said she presented at hospital as a precaution and had no signs of poisoning.

They were button mushrooms and I'm still not certain if it was them or the oil I stir fried them in.

There were a couple of times I had similar stomach aches after eating take away fish and chips.
My friend said that he could smell that the oil was rancid.

But nothing like that horrible night, after the mushrooms

I didn't get the vomiting or diarrhea.

What I got was violent pains in my stomach, but it felt like it was all over my lower body.
Some of the worst pains were around my kidneys ( I think)

And it went on all night and into the next morning.

I was alone.

But i didn't get the feeling that I needed medical attention, I believed it would resolve itself, which it did...eventually,
