Reward offered in Rockhampton double murder investigation

October 27, 2014 at 3:45 pm

A $250,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of any person responsible for the murders of Robert Martinez and Chantal Barnett, who went missing in Rockhampton last year, was announced today.

The Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services has approved the reward following extensive investigations into the matter since the pair disappeared in March last year.

Additionally, an indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first provides information leading to a conviction.

The reward follows the recent discovery of human remains at a property on Bowlin Road in Rockhampton on October 22, 2014.

Significant items of interest, including a handbag, identification and person effects belonging to Chantal Barnett, were located at the same search site on October 8.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon said investigators were committed to solving the case and were hoping the reward would encourage members of the public with valuable information to come forward.

“There are those people out there that may not be directly involved in the actual crime itself but may hold key information needed for the police to solve this case,” Assistant Commissioner Condon said.

“This announcement means if you are the first to come forward and were not involved in the actual offence, we would be in a position to recommend to the Director of Public Prosecutions an indemnity.

“There may be those who have assisted in keeping the crime a secret and have been loyal to those involved but may not want to spend time in prison and this is their chance to come forward.”

Police are continuing to appeal for a person who has previously provided information about the occupants of a white commodore owned by Robert Martinez and being driven at the time of his death to come forward and provide further information to investigators.

Anyone with information in relation to this matter is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

I'm confused about this. To the best of my knowledge, the remains haven't been identified. (I don't doubt they are Robert though). So how is this already a murder case?

"Robert and Chantel have failed to contact their family, have not accessed bank accounts, and haven't used mobile phones etc," he said.

"That, combined with a number of other factors, now have led us to draw the conclusion we're now conducting a double murder investigation."

Police say they may have already spoken to the person responsible for killing the two.

Sounds like they have a fair idea of who did this. They wouldn't say its a double homicide if murder suicide was plausible!!

"We're not free. We will never be free until we know," Mr Barnett said.

"I just hope there is something done before I go to the grave."
