Does anybody know how many people are in the jury and whether the decision they make about the verdict has to be unanimous or a majority?

What verdicts do they have to choose from is it murder 1 or manslaughter?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Any replies would be much appreciated as I am genuinely interested I'm not familiar with any of the Australian trials on here.

Twelve jurors & it has to reach a unanimous verdict. Cowan's trial is classed as a criminal murder trial in Brisbane Supreme Court.

Criminal trial

In a criminal trial a jury of 12 people selected at random from the community decides if an accused is guilty or not guilty based on the facts of the case. All other decisions, including any penalty to be imposed, are made by the judge.

A criminal trial may be held without a jury, in which case the judge will also decide if an accused is guilty or not guilty.

This link contains a mountain of info regarding majority verdicts...

Folks just reminding everyone we can't discuss "criminal history" in this case until the trial is over.

I'm a bit worried that reasonable doubt was indeed introduced and that the jury (or one person) might get hung up on Jackway. I hope not.

I have thought this, but I believe he was there, he did it and the Jury will see that too. Even if Jackway was involved Cowan was there too.

No chance of reasonable doubt.

If they did come back with something so bizarre, the Qld govt would challenge the finding anyway and he would remain in custody regardless.

Jackways fairly irrelevant in the big picture - Cowan's the one who knew where Daniel was buried, that cannot be reasoned away.

Also, Australian juries don't have to worry about sending an innocent man to his death, which must make the decision making much easier.

Thinking of the Morcombe family and friends.

Another significant day, the end a long and emotionally exhausting journey as the Trial nears its end.
