An Oregon surgeon who went to Australia after being sanctioned for unprofessional conduct, and ended up facing manslaughter charges there, has finally been banned from ever practising medicine in Australia again. He was nicknamed 'Dr Death' during the lengthy legal processes and inquiry into his conduct at a Bundaberg hospital.
Dr Jayant Patel fled back to the US after questions were raised about the deaths of dozens of his patients in Bundaberg and was eventually extradited back to Australia in 2008, to face three manslaughter charges. He was convicted in 2010 but these were overturned on appeal in 2013. He did serve a two-year sentence for lying to authorities to gain employment. The case caused a huge scandal in Australia.
