His lawyer has indicated Bennetts will plead not guilty.
Bennetts’ father spoke of the devastation of both families and vowed to stand by his son.
“We love our son very much,” he said.
“We will continue to support him and we’re sorry for the family and friends and the loss that they have had.”

THE teen charged with murdering school friend Jayde Kendall in the Lockyer Valley did not enter a plea when he appeared in court.
Brenden Jacob Bennetts, 18, appeared briefly in Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning after being charged late yesterday with murder and misconduct with a corpse.
Wearing a standard brown tracksuit, he immediately fixed his eyes on his mother, briefly smiling, talking to his lawyer Brendan Ryan as he entered the prisoners' dock.
Sergeant Scott Pearson told the court police sought a forensic procedure order, which usually refers to DNA, blood or bodily fluid tests. Mr Ryan did not object.
Bennetts' lawyer Brendan Ryan told reporters outside the court his client would plead not guilty and an application for bail would eventually be made.
"Unfortunately as of yesterday we all discovered that young Jayde Kendall had passed away," he said.
"I know that there will be a lot of speculation (but) there is always a defence case, and there is certainly a defence case to be made in this particular matter."
He said Bennetts was agitated, extremely depressed and prone to moments of reserved silence.
Mr Ryan said the young man had "significant remorse" for the tragic loss of Jayde and described the pair as friends, despite a "limited acquaintanceship".
