The full decision has now been published on the NSW Caselaw website. It makes confronting reading.

The judge cited "R v Holdom" (the murderer of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Pearce), among other cases, as a precedent for why the maximum penalty was appropriate.

Justin Laurens Stein has been given a life sentence after being found guilty of the murder of schoolgirl Charlise Mutten. The nine-year-old's body was put in a barrel and dumped near the Colo River, south-west of Sydney, in January 2022.
