In 2012, Droudis and Monis's relationship became more serious, and the judge said a motivating factor for the murder was their desire to form a family unit with Monis's children.

Droudis had often attended child access visits where Monis asked the children to refer to her as their mother, the judge said.

While making the murder plan, Justice Johnson said Monis concocted an alibi "so contrived that it was highly incriminating of Monis in itself".

He was far away when Droudis — dressed in a hijab — waited for Ms Lee to enter a Werrington apartment complex they used for child access visits.

When Ms Lee climbed the stairs, Droudis attacked, stabbing her 18 times.

"The crime involved a frenzied knife attack which continued in spite of Helen Lee's plea for mercy," Justice Johnson said.

A neighbour witnessed some of the attack and pleaded for Droudis to stop.

Droudis then set Ms Lee on fire and fled the scene."

‘The two victims of the Lindt cafe siege, cafe manager Tori Johnson and barrister Katrina Dawson, have been honoured by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove in this year’s Australian Bravery Awards.

A third hostage, Jarrod Morton-Hoffman - who was 19 at the time of the siege - was also honoured with a bravery award.’

Lindt Cafe siege pair honoured with bravery award

‘THE bravery shown by Lindt Cafe siege victim Katrina Dawson and survivor Jarrod Morton-Hoffman has been formally recognised four years after the attack brought global terrorism to Sydney’s streets.

The pair are among 62 Australians honoured in the latest national bravery awards announced by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove today.’

‘Ms Dawson bargained with crazed gunman and terrorist Man Haron Monis to release another hostage after he appeared to offer her a way out of the siege in mid-December 2014.

“When he refused, Ms Dawson continued to provide genuine support to other hostages throughout the ordeal,” Ms Dawson’s accolade reads.

The terrorist eventually shot dead the cafe’s manager, Tori Johnson, and heavily armed police stormed the building.

Ms Dawson, who had complied calmly with her captor’s demands in a bid to keep everyone safe, was killed in the crossfire.’

‘Mr Morton-Hoffman, a worker at the cafe, was instructed by Monis to call the media.

He followed instructions calmly, his accolade reads, even with the terrorist’s gun trained on him.

“As the gunman became increasingly agitated, Mr Morton-Hoffman interacted with the offender dissuading him from violence while he formulated a number of plans to assist the hostages.”

By his actions Mr Morton-Hoffman displayed considerable bravery during the 17-hour siege, the accolade says.’

The chief sniper during the Lindt Cafe siege will sue NSW Police, alleging he and fellow officers were prevented from doing their jobs and the lives of cafe manager Tori Johnson and barrister Katrina Dawson could have been saved.

The officer, who can only be identified as Sierra 3-1, alleges in a 30-page affidavit he has suffered psychological trauma due to decisions taken by his superiors during the siege on December 15, 2014 in which 17 people were taken hostage.

The Daily Telegraph reports the civil action, lodged in the NSW District Court on April 12, will be heard next year in a one-day hearing.

It follows another complaint he made to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commissioner that was dismissed, that claimed senior officers perjured themselves at the initial inquest.
