Phone call link to missing Rahma mystery

A telephone conversation between Sydney and Lebanon the night before baby Rahma El-Dennaoui was reported missing from her Sydney home may have had a bearing on her disappearance, an inquest has heard.

[snip]

Mr Bromwich said the inquiry would hear details about a telephone conversation made the night before the child went missing "which may have predicted or commented on her imminent disappearance".

Rahma's sister saw a long-haired 'monster' the night she disappeared

A LONG-HAIRED "monster" in a child's dream could have been the only sighting of the person who abducted toddler Rahma El-Dennaoui more than six years ago, an inquest heard this morning.

[snip]

In an interview seven months later, she said: "I was awake and I saw the thief, but he didn't take me. The thief had long hair."

Speaking through an interpreter, Rahma's mother Alyya El-Dennaoui told the court she didn't know anyone who fit the description or what her daughter may have meant when she said the man "didn't have hands".

A gaping hole, large enough for a child to be lifted through, was found cut in the flyscreen above the bed with a sharp knife when Rahma's siblings woke to discover their sister missing.

Missing toddler's father found man at his home at 3am 'wanting to sell gold'

THE father of toddler Rahma El-Dennaoui has denied he is a well-known drug dealer and that his daughter accidentally swallowed ecstasy the night before she vanished from the family home.

[snip]

As well as denying the drug allegations made about him at the inquest on Wednesday, Mr El-Dennaoui said he found a neighbour, who he knew as Ghassan, at the side of his house at about 3am three months before 20-month-old Rahma vanished.

Mr El-Dennaoui said that when he confronted Ghassan, his neighbour told him he had come to the house to ''try to sell you some gold''. Mr El-Dennaoui said he was spooked by Ghassan's actions and immediately told him to leave.

AFTER seven years and numerous theories, the most explosive claim about the disappearance of Rahma El-Dennaoui was detailed in court yesterday - her father killed her in a fit of rage.

Wow the father certainly has quite a few allegations against him. Drug dealer being one of them, something I never would have thought seeing the original pleas for information. I really feel sorry for her Mum :( having to hear all about her husbands activites on the proviso she didnt know

Asked to account for phone calls between her phone and her husband's phone on the night, Mrs Dennaoui said she frequently called her husband when both were at home.

'I didn't go to Hosayn's house that night and if I did, maybe I (dropped) parsley (off) but I don't remember (going) to Hosayn's house that night,' she said.

How big is her house? :waitasec:

POLICE believe toddler Rahma El-Dennaoui probably died in her home and her family concocted an abduction hoax to conceal the child's death, an inquest heard yesterday.

But the officer who has led the investigation into her disappearance for nearly seven years admitted there was little "hard evidence" to support many of his suspicions.

Detective-Sergeant Nick Sedgwick told an inquest his focus had recently turned to Rahma's immediate family due to "inconsistencies and deceit" from several key witnesses.

POLICE didn't forensically examine a car and caravan belonging to a prime suspect in the disappearance of Rahma El-Dennaoui until 18 months after the young girl vanished, a coroner heard today.

An inquest into the toddler's disappearance was told the man, who can't be named for legal reasons, was almost immediately identified as a possible culprit in her apparent abduction in November 2005.

He had previously been accused of sexually abusing two young girls, although charges in both cases were dismissed in court.

A WITNESS caught discussing "shots" in secretly taped conversations with Rahma El-Dennaoui's father has claimed they were only talking about bird hunting and denied using a code for drug use.
...
The inquest previously heard allegations Mr El-Dennaoui had been a drug dealer - claims he has vehemently denied.

In Glebe Coroners Court Rahma's mother, Alyaa El-Dennaoui, was asked by counsel assisting the coroner, Robert Bromwich SC, about a joke she and her sister shared during a recorded telephone conversation played at the inquest today.

"Do you see anything wrong with making jokes about your daughter's disappearance?" he asked.

In April, Mrs El-Dennaoui said she didn't know how a cable drum got outside Rahma's bedroom.

Today, she said she moved the cable drum outside the window in the days before her daughter's disappearance

He said that in April Mrs El-Dennaoui told the inquest Rahma was sleeping opposite her on the other side of the lounge room on a large couch.

Today, however, she said Rahma was on the same side of the room as her on a smaller couch, Mr Bromwich pointed out.

Seven years after she disappeared from her Sydney home, the fate of missing toddler Rahma El-Dennaoui remains a mystery, with a coroner declining to rule out the possibility her family staged her abduction.
Deputy State Coroner Sharon Freund on Thursday handed down an open finding into the 2005 disappearance of 20-month-old Rahma, saying she was unable to determine whether the little girl was dead or not.
Instead, she referred the matter to the NSW homicide squad for further investigation.

Ms Freund said the behaviour of Rahma's parents during the intercepted phone conversations was "puzzling" and not consistent with that of a grieving family.
"In particular, the joking and laughing by Rahma's parents with third parties about the kidnapping and the splitting of the reward money, the specific references to avoiding talking about the inquest on the telephone and actually talking in code," Ms Freund said.

Gotta wonder if this is linked to the William Tyrrell abduction investigation.

Doesn't look like there will be any justice for Rahma anytime soon. The family grew bigger as the days she went missing increased and it appears life did in fact just go on.

This poor little girl. Has anyone heard any updates in the last year or so?

I think the "Police were told" comment above is very telling. They are not saying "she went missing" they say "were told she went missing". This indicates to me what they suspect.
