Gold Coast murder accused Gable Tostee splits with lawyer days before start of trial

January 06, 2015 12:00AM

ACCUSED balcony killer Gable Tostee has split from high-profile defence lawyer Terry O’Gorman only days before he faces court charged with the murder of a New Zealand tourist.

The self-confessed Gold Coast playboy, who has boasted of bedding more than 150 women, is accused of the death of Warriena “Rrie” Tagpuno Wright, who fell from his 14th-floor apartment just hours after they met on the dating app Tinder.

However, now days before Tostee is due to face court on a charge of murder, he has also split with O’Gorman, one of Queensland’s most experienced and respected lawyers.

His new lawyer is Nick Dore from Fisher Dore.

Meanwhile, detectives working on the case are dealing with Tinder executives in the United States to gather key evidence.

He is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

Bbm
Oh! Soon he might boast 150+ lawyers as well...

Hiya poss! :seeya: Was it you poss who posted the pics of his unit with the gym set in his bedroom?
The clunking sound sounded just like a barbell/dumbbell. I was thinking also that Canon camera has a metal casing but I'm sure it would NOT produce that heavier sound heard.

When she was allegedly told to 'let it go', could her hand have released a body part of his (throat, balls) then her limp arm/wrist drops to the carpet and her bangles make a metallic clanging sound when that happens?

According to the alleged transcript. Does that scenario seem possible?

That sounds very possible, to me. And if that is the case, that her bangle(s) fell off, she could have been holding anything at all.

Some phones have a metal casing. For all we know it could have been a phone she had in her hand ... just not her phone. Nothing says that Rrie tried to hit him with the metallic object, and I'm not sure that we should presume she did.

“You think that you hit me and I was going to fall down like in the movies?” he says.

She is holding something.

“Let it go,” he tells her. She is making a choking sound. He tells her again. A metallic object is heard dropping. The sliding balcony door is unlocked.

I just meant to reply to this! Should have quoted this one.

How expensive is this becoming for mummy and daddy?

I think that you have to give a retainer to a lawyer when they take your case. Then if you .. ahem .. change lawyers ( again and again) I wouldn't think they would refund any of your retainer. I would think that they would just provide an invoice that eats up all of the retainer in court time, admin time, meeting-with-client time, meeting-with-prosecutor time, etc etc.

Plus the $200,000 bail money. Plus feeding and housing Gabe. Does he still have the apartment, or has he let it go now? Who is paying the rent there?

The things we'd do for our (adult-and-approaching-30-yrs-old) kids! :sigh:

Just thinking about this more ... if he had a grip on her neck and a grip on her wrist trying to shake or pry whatever free from Rrie's hand, it is VERY possible that the clanging metallic thing was jewellery/bangle(s) that Rrie was wearing that were forced off by his grip. If it was a softer item that Rrie was holding, or if she was hanging on to a piece of furniture trying to stop him from dragging her around or dragging her out to the balcony, we wouldn't know about that object at all.

Will be interesting to know the autopsy results .. areas of bruising that occurred prior to the fall.

Are we, the great unwashed lowly taxpayers paying?

Possible .. but don't know if it is probable. Would Legal Aid pay for him to keep shifting from one lawyer to another? Especially top lawyers? This one is an 'accredited criminal law specialist' according to their fancy, very zen website.

Surely he would be down to Joe/Jane Bloggs who just passed the bar by now, if Legal Aid was paying (I hope!)

ETA: I notice that they also deal with motor vehicle cases ... DUIs, etc etc. An all-rounder for Tostee's all-round requirements.

In today's Courier Mail article cited above:

A three-hour audio file, exactly matching the copy obtained by police, was last month uploaded to a Canadian website. It was deleted days later, along with a post on an online bodybuilding forum.

I find the persistent description of 'metallic object' weird - especially by Tostee. Makes sense for reporting the unknown, but when referring to a known item in your own house, wouldn't you just call a spade a spade?

Example:

"I was struck by an unknown metallic object when mugged walking home".
-v-
"Stop hitting your brother with that... metallic object". Huh?

What is it about this 'metallic object' that might perhaps change people's perceptions if they knew what it was exactly. Would it undermine level of threat he supposedly felt? A metallic object could be a ruler for crying out loud - fear of being mocked by the brahs or the threat of it not presenting as too greater threat in eyes of average Joe? Was it an illegal item? All will be revealed I guess, but something is off.
