Police say they no longer believe it is possible a three-year-old boy could still be alive if he was lost in bushland on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

---
Superintendent Paul Fehon said if William did wander into the bush, he was unlikely to still be alive.

"The experts cannot substantiate that survival in the bush would be there at this point in time," he said.

But he said there was still no solid evidence that he did wander into the bush.

Specialist police, including the sex crimes squad, have been brought in to investigate the possibility the boy was abducted.

this is on friday at 1.50pm, within hours of william reported missing

More than 50 officers from the MNC Local Area Command, SES units from Port Macquarie, Wauchope and the Camden Haven, the Dog Squad and concerned residents have established a search grid in nearby scrub.

Police are grateful for offers of volunteer manpower but have asked the public to remain clear of the area so the search team can conduct a thorough sweep of the area.

PolAir is expected to arrive by 3pm.

Thanks bearbear.

Weatherzone has predicted Friday night's patchy rain to continue on Saturday morning, as a trough brings showers to northeastern NSW.

would the rain make tracking difficult for the dogs to pick up a scent?

What about this for a scenario ..

Mum rocks up to grandma's house and says 'I've brought the kids too, they're playing out the front' puts kettle on and starts catch up, the daughter comes in after a few minutes and grandma says 'where is your brother' and the girl says 'I don't know' they go outside and no William ..

<modsnip>

Not even an update on the SES FB page this morning. No reminder of where searchers are to meet, what to wear, what to bring/not bring.

Hmmm ... all gone very quiet by them.

I wonder what is going on? Silence, to me, generally means that something is happening in the investigation ... that police want the publicity toned down for some reason. Otherwise, why not plaster William's face everywhere so that people who are not on top of this know that he is still missing and can watch for him?

Hoping today is the day that they find william safe and well, he's been gone long enough.

that article about the stranger asking for directions to his street is a bit sispicious though.

I'm not sure I am buying this story!!! Really.. with today's technology, smart phones / gps systems / car navigation ... Do people really stop and ask directions??
I know not everyone is tech savvy, but if you are going to abduct a child premeditated, you are going to do your research!!! Surely!!

<modsnip>

IMO this story does not add up, it hasn't from day 1!!!
And the lack of scent being able to be picked up, just adds another dimension of doubt for me!!!

Moo

Who is Nicole?
Do the family have a car?
Who is bio dad?
Are there cameras at the train station?
Who was man asking for directions? If it is a perp he's pretty darn stupid.

Who is Nicole is a big one for me at the moment...

I like this theory but how can it explain the sister saying she was with him?

But he said there was still no solid evidence that he did wander into the bush

As I've indicated, we have no indication whether young William is out in the bush or whether other forms of human intervention have been involved.

"So again, we're appealing to any member of the public that may have known of any person or any vehicle that was to be in the vicinity of Benaroo Drive at Kendall or the township of Kendall, if they can provide that to Crime Stoppers."

Today the search area has been extended to a three-kilometre radius from the grandmother's house, while trail bikes and four-wheel drives will look beyond that area.

As the search continues, of course the number of volunteers have diminished, but in regards to our resources that we have here we've continued with the numbers," Superintendent Fehon said.

"We will be looking at different facets of searching as I've indicated - trail bikes, four-wheel drives - as the ground search in this area is completed we will look at the broader area in the vicinity

Just going back to the costume found...there are many Spiderman costumes on the market from cheapies to the more deluxe. My son is 3 and we went with an Ebay cheapie. The thing didn't last a day, with the hood seams splitting almost straight away, fabric pulls and small holes developing quickly. It's possible the one found in the park was binned because it was crap and fell apart.
The suit found may have been a different style and easily ruled out.

There has been nothing confirmed other than young William was playing in the yard with his sister that day," Supt Fehon said.

This says to me that someone else saw little spiderman running around in the yard that morning. Police have said they will be looking at all possibilities ... they don't just take everybody's word for granted these days.

I still remember Chloe Campbell's case ......

So many conflicting reports ... It makes sense to me that he was left alone outside when he disappeared from that front yard. His sister would have seen something if she was still in the yard. I just can't seem to shake the feeling that he could have been left outside alone a lot longer than what they have told police.

Yes, this newer article says that William was alone outside. Perhaps the adults did not realise that the sister came inside too? It would be unusual for a 3-year old to be left alone in an unfenced yard, even for a few minutes ... although there are reports that William was on the balcony/verandah ... perhaps that is what the sister told police, when interviewed.

Exact details of the situation where William went missing are very murky.

The boy was last seen at 10.30am wearing a Spiderman suit. His older sister, mother and grandmother had gone inside for a matter of minutes when he vanished.

in all cases of missing children, police and ses have spent a lot of days searching, they have to, but often we later hear police instincts had alerted them at the start, something not right.

In one of today's links I'm sure I saw the detective say backyard. Colour me confused.

Thing is, if you see the Google Streetview of the house, the front 'verandah' is non-existent - basically just steps-with-railing down from the front of the house. I'll post a link...

EDIT: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-31...ata=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sC2qHQYw10BQPaoKzIHXqLA!2e0

That being said, were he up on that 'verandah', I doubt anyone would be brazen enough to grab him from there, they could be seen from inside. Not much room there though so I'd say yard is more believable.

Seems to be mixed reports of front-, backyard, or verandah, but the house has no real fencing around it so it's much of a muchness (except for the fact that, were he out the back, he'd be less visible).

Assuming he was there in the first place (I don't really doubt he was, but who knows, certainly none of us), he'd be pretty visible/accessible to someone driving past, unlikely as that may be (made more likely if the road is used as an access for 4x4's into the bush. Going up the street in Google Streetview though, it looks like the bush closes in pretty tightly, not sure how much of an 'access' it'd be, though an overhead view certainly seems to show a 'path' through the bush at the end of the street - https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-31.6407374,152.6939578,528m/data=!3m1!1e3

It's been said their visit was a surprise, so it's unlikely anyone knew he was there (including whomever asked for directions at the local shop, which may not be unusual if it was a 4x4 access road, regardless of how uncommon needing directions'd be in this day and age of maps, GPS etc... also were someone planning an abduction they'd hardly ask for directions from a local, risk CCTV exposure etc).

I'm leaning towards an opportunistic abduction, considering the lack of evidence or likelihood of him wandering by all accounts, by someone who happened to be there (local, 4x4 driver, etc), unlikely as such a presence may be.

At least that provides some hope he's still alive...

I guess also if they search it could give someone a false sense of security if the police appear to be searching, while quietly looking into others, which im sure they are/have been doing.

Would they really waste resources like that?
