Australian couple abandon surrogate twin with Down's syndrome in Thailand

Nah, fruity - I agree, a surrogate ought not claim to be the parent, having entered an agreement. I can understand them wanting the child to have a good life, and wanting to provide one if the bio parents cannot, or do not wish to. But then, there may be other biological relatives to consider...

There needs to be some kind of attempt at international agreement re the legalities of it, as I do think this is a human rights issue. Too many avenues for exploitation, for all parties concerned.

From the Guardian link, re the Sth African surrogancy:
In 2007 the adoption rules in the UK emphasised matching children to parents of the same ethnicity and we were advised by our local authority that, as a German and South African of mixed race, we stood little chance of success.

^ This is so wrong... How'd that happen?!

Sometimes I feel like the 'developed' nations are in serious decline. Mainly when I see things like this happening.

So, David Farnell is legally in the clear. Though I hope that the pressure stays on to watch out for his baby girl.

But the following article (per my BBM above) about the Japanese businessman is really sad, sounds like a baby-mill. :( This Japanese man is allegedly the father of all nine babies, and probably one in utero baby.

I don;t even understand what's happening there. WTH? Why is a man fathering 9 kids or so at the same time? For himself? Why isn't he with them? Why are they all in Thailand still? it's beyond my comprehension.

It had earlier been reported that David John Farnell, now 56, had been sentenced to three years' jail in 1997 for sexually molesting two girls under the age of 13 and that months later, while still in prison, he was charged again, this time with six counts of indecent dealing with a child under the age of 13.

But further court documents have revealed other sex offences, bringing the total number of convictions against him to 22 - including a victim aged just seven.

To which he pleaded "guilty", it should be added.

There's a definite message coming from his family that they'd like all this to just stay buried... it might be "heartbreaking" to them that the world is now aware that Farnell is a kiddy rapist. But I reckon it's awesome.

I also reckon he's a prime example of WHY we need a national sex offender registry!!!!!

The poor little girl who they failed to abandon - she doesn't stand a chance.

The Japanese 'father' claims that they are all to work in his business when they get older. Which sounds equally as bad (and BS) to me. Slave labour? What if they want to be a butcher, a baker or a candlestick maker? I suspect those babies would have all been sold on the black market .. to who-knows-who :( Hopefully now they will be able to be put up for legal adoption, where the adoptive parents are heavily vetted.

So what does this mean: they wanted both babies to be born before they "made a decision"?? Clearly they made "a decision" ... How do they justify it?

This next link is worth reading, it is written by a parent who went through surrogacy in South Africa (IMO one of the better places wrt regulation and laws).

ITA. What is he is talking about here? After the baby is born, isn't it too late to make a decision on whether they want him or not?

60 minutes is making mince meat of the bio parents.
They wanted to lay blame on someone so they wanted their money back and left Gammy behind.
They're looking selfish, covetous nasties.

MINCE MEAT! Bad decision to go on 60 Minutes.
They are saying they wanted Gammy desperately but NOT ONE phone call to find out how he is.

They are lying through their teeth. The fake tears are not convincing.

This is cringeworthy. That "man's" concerned parent act is abysmal.

Going to watch this when it's uploaded on 60 min site. :waiting:

Yuck. Watching 60 Minutes and the 'father' is creepy as. He couldn't be any more pathetic.

Whoa the father is in breakdown mode, like ready to implode or explode, implode is the better look right now.
But he is miraculously cured of pedophilia!
Seeee counselling helps.
Tara didn't hold back.

Was it just me or did it look like she was struggling to hide her disgust? She looked emotional. There was like a rash starting on her neck or something. Good on her for keeping it together.

More than a rash starting I thought she looked like she wanted to reach over hit him.

AND THE BEST ACTOR OSCAR GOES TO.......THE PEDOPHILE
He's kidding himself & the wife is in denial.
I want to know if they did send the 'I can't remember how much, maybe $1,000' over to baby Gammy. I doubt it very much!

Just finished watching it. As MrsGNorris would say, they're lying liars.

What do you think they planned to achieve by telling their story? Did they think it would be unchallenged and they'd walk away being victims? I wonder if they felt they achieved their goal or whether all the other people who stood in the way of their bringing their son home also stood in the way of them telling a convincing story.

I am not quite sure how to feel about this. I am not sure what or who to believe at this time. He is a free man, as in he is not a wanted man or escaped from prison. He has served his time/sentence for the crimes he was accused of. Seems that the laws/sentences are too lenient for crimes against children there. With 22 crimes/charges? for crimes against children how is he out, and if he is out then the laws for adopting out of country should be changed so people that commit such crimes can't adopt, period. It seems that there is a surrogacy issue that is the problem. IDK Just seems there's more to this then what we are seeing/hearing. Just seems to be another world of people that pay a clinic in another country to hire a poor woman to carry a baby, just baffles my mind. jmo idk

I would say, I don't find their claim credible at all. He admitted he would have wanted the child aborted if he knew about Down syndrome earlier, and even demanded refund from the agency. Why would he ask for a refund if he intended to take the child? But he claims that surrogate mother decided she wouldn't give them the child (the one with a disability), but gave them the healthy one? Doesn't sound very believable, does it?

"He admitted that had he known about the disability earlier, he would have insisted Ms Pattharamon abort the foetus as no ‘‘parent wants a son with a disability’’."

HAHA!! I can't wait to see this .. couldn't be bothered last night and glad I didn't by the looks, the little bit I did see made me sick .. cannot stand him especially, and yukko at his poor little boy act, GMAFB .. especially when we think back to all the other versions we've heard.
