After spending six hours meeting with renowned private investigator Jay J. Armes on Thursday, Logan McQueary set off for San Antonio, Texas.

Armes and McQueary went over every detail of McQueary's relationship with Johnson during their meeting, and they also spoke about Tammi Smith, the woman who wanted to adopt Gabriel and is now charged as Johnson's co-conspirator.

Armes planned to accompany McQueary to the San Antonio Police Department, where the chief of police has promised to meet with them.

According to McQueary, the police department will also pay for the search party's stay.

Logan McQueary Forced To Briefly Interrupt His Journey To San Antonio
POSTED: 6:18 pm MST February 5, 2010
UPDATED: 7:44 pm MST February 5, 2010

Logan McQueary interrupted his road trip searching for his son, Gabriel Johnson, to return to the valley for less than 24 hours. McQueary said he was contacted by his old landlord who told him he had to get his stuff out of the Tempe trailer he shared with the baby’s mom, Elizabeth Johnson, or all of it would be sold.

McQueary took the time at the trailer to also look for clues that might help the private investigator Jay J. Armes.

“They're trying to see, you know, what motivated her to do this or what her next move would have been. Try to get in her head to see if anything … try to figure out what she was thinking at the time, anything like that. So that's what especially Jay J. Armes wanted me to look for, any type of handwriting. Anything like that so they can do an analysis on the handwriting,” said McQueary.

During his short stay in the valley McQueary expressed concern that the San Antonio police department seemed to be behind the ball on this case. San Antonio has the lead in the missing person’s case regarding Gabriel, but McQueary questions whether they’ve done anything with it.

Friday afternoon, McQueary was set to hop a plane and fly directly to San Antonio where he was hoping to meet with the chief of police to demand some answers.

Managers of the landfill have blocked off an area that might be searched for the baby, but police said they hadn't yet searched the site and decline to say whether they plan to do so. A portion of the Tessman Road Landfill was cordoned off based on where Gabriel was last seen on Dec. 26 in San Antonio.

Baby Gabriel's Dad Arrives in San Antonio
Last Update: 2/05 11:21 pm
<snipped>
Logan McQueary arrived at the San Antonio Airport Friday night. He plans to start searching for baby Gabriel Johnson first thing Saturday morning.

McQueary told News 4 WOAI that he is scheduled to meet with the San Antonio police chief and detectives. He feels they are not doing enough to look for his son. While McQueary said he's hopeful Gabriel is still alive, he believes the police should have already searched a San Antonio landfill for the boy's body. McQueary wants police to search that area so they can rule out a connection to the landfill and move on to other leads.

While McQueary feels that San Antonio Police officers are not doing enough to look for the baby, San Antonio police say they are doing a lot of work on the case. They say the investigation is very active and detectives are following up on leads. A spokesman for the department said officers look forward to meeting with McQueary and talking to anyone who may have information about Gabriel.

Logan McQueary and a cousin arrived at San Antonio International Airport around 9 p.m. from El Paso, where he met with private investigator Jay J. Armes.

McQueary is expected to meet soon with Police Department officials about the missing person case, Armes said.

Police spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez said McQueary has been in contact with the department and conveyed his appreciation to detectives “for their effort in trying to find out what happened to the child.”

Police still have not searched for the baby at an East Side landfill, which is an area of interest for the department in connection with the case, Gutierrez said.

Warner football to be auctioned at benefit for Tempe boy
Last Update: 12:58 pm

A football signed by Arizona Cardinals' Kurt Warner is just one item to be auctioned off during a fundraiser to help find a 9-month-old boy missing since late December. Scholtzky's restaurant is hosting the event at its store located at 4017 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 100.

Saturday's fundraiser will help the boy's father, Logan McQueary, who has been traveling back and forth between the Valley and Texas as police continue to search for Gabriel.

Jessica's Law Now has been making every effort to assist Logan McQueary and family members help find 9-month-old Gabriel, according to a news release.

Group officials say data shows that a child goes missing every 40 seconds in America, over 2,100 per day. In excess of 800,000 kids are reported missing every year. On average 1,300 are taken by a family member.

The fundraiser started Friday and will run through Sunday.

Police Chief William McManus announced Saturday that the case of the missing Arizona infant known as Baby Gabriel is now being investigated as a homicide and a kidnapping.

McManus also said the San Antonio Police Department would begin searching an East Side landfill for the body of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson

Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary of Tempe, arrived in San Antonio last night and planned to meet with the Police Department. McQueary met with local authorities earlier Saturday.

Private investigator Jay J. Armes said McQueary was retracing Johnson's steps. “I don't know why they opened a homicide case,” Armes said. “I am surprised since there is no body.”

During a news briefing on Saturday, police said it doesn't mean they think the 9-month-old boy is dead. They said the classification is a procedural step needed to move forward with a search of a Texas landfill.

A portion of the Tessman Road Landfill has been cordoned off based on where Gabriel was last seen on Dec. 26 in San Antonio.

After Saturday's announcement, McQueary said he was relieved. "I feel a lot more comfortable now with the San Antonio Police Department, the detectives there, they are actually doing a lot more than everybody knows," he said.

San Antonio Police have secured an area surrounding a landfill where they believe Gabriel's body might be. Classifying the baby's disappearance as a homicide will allow police to search for a body, which will begin after the weather improves.

Saturday, McQueary met with Chief McManus. "I think they're doing a lot of work on the case that we didn't know about, and I really appreciate their efforts," says McQueary, although he is "disappointed" about the turn in the case.

San Antonio police: Baby Gabriel case now a homicide

William McManus said his department is gearing up to search an East Side landfill for the body of little Gabriel Johnson.

"There have been numerous lead that we continue to follow up that hopefully could lead us to Baby Gabriel," McManus said. "We're not 100 percent certain that they will pan out. We are going to search that landfill. The question becomes, 'Why are you searching that landfill if this is a missing persons case?' So, all hopes are that we would find the baby alive, but we are going to proceed with the murder investigation."

Today's announcement regarding the homicide investigation came as members of the McQueary family were planning an event to raise money to cover McQueary's travel expenses.

"It is devstating," said Kelli McQueary. "But until we see proof that Gabriel is not with us, we will keep the live search going."

The search of that San Antonio landfill is expected to begin as soon as weather there permits.

Now, investigators in San Antonio have stated that the case is now a homicide investigation and once weather permits, the east side of the Allied Waste landfill that has been garnered off will be searched.

San Antonio Chief of Police William McManus spoke about the change in the case and the upcoming search of the landfill.

“Classifying this as a homicide allows us to search for a dead body. You could ask, ‘How can you search for a dead body if it’s a missing person’s case?’ “

Police now calling case of missing Tempe baby a homicide
2/6/10 - Last Update: 7:47 pm
<snipped>
San Antonio police announced Saturday that they are investigating the case of an Arizona baby missing for more than a month as a kidnapping and homicide, allowing them to search for a dead body.

Police Chief William McManus said officers will search a landfill for the body of 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson once weather permits, adding that he still hopes authorities will find the boy alive.

Peg Mulloy, a spokeswoman for Arizona-based Republic Services Inc., which owns the 1,000-acre landfill that police plan to search, told the San Antonio Express-News that part of it has been blocked off since authorities contacted the waste management company.

McManus said police had been planning "for a long time" to search the site but rainy weather had caused delays.

"Logistics make it hard," he said. "We've been working with contractors, and worrying about toxic runoff associated with landfills. And, the weather hasn't been cooperating. We're expecting more rain in the next couple days."

Only On 9: Baby Gabriel's Father Getting Help In El Paso

It is a story that has captured the attention of the nation -- an Arizona mother who claimed to have killed her baby, cut up his body and thrown him in a dumpster.

Then, that mother changed her story, which has brought El Paso into the mix. The child's father is now getting help from local private investigator J. Jay Armes. After being arrested in Miami, baby Gabriel's mother changed her story. She claimed she did not kill the baby but instead sold the baby in a parking lot in San Antonio.

"We have not received any indication that they have found any traces of child or blood, or a child that was cut up like she said she had done," J. Jay Armes said.
