Exclusive: Baby Gabriel search focused on missing green bag

Sources have revealed to KENS 5 that when Elizabeth Johnson vacated her hotel room at the Homegate Inn & Suites in late December, she left behind all of her son's personal belongings.

But there reportedly was one item investigators could not find: a green diaper bag that belonged to Gabriel Johnson. Of course, the 8-month-old was missing too.

That's where sources said police are looking for a green diaper bag or suitcase that could contain the child's body.

As a result, investigators reportedly think the child really could be a capital murder victim and unthinkably was tossed away like garbage.

Officials also released information about the hotel room in Texas where Gabriel was last seen alive.

Police said that when Gabriel's mother, Elizabeth Johnson, checked out of the hotel, she left all of the baby's personal items behind. The only missing item, police said, was the green diaper bag that Elizabeth Johnson claims to have put Gabriel's body in before throwing it in the trash.

Famed sleuth hunts for missing baby
February 12, 2010 - 10:25PM
<snipped>
A renowned private investigator and four of his associates who are conducting a nationwide search of missing 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson believe the boy is still alive and they are close to finding him.

Jay J. Armes, whose office is based in El Paso, Texas, told the Tribune he believes Gabriel Johnson has fallen victim to an underground adoption, and he and his investigators are following up on more than 350 leads nationwide that include sightings of the boy.

Armes, who did not reveal his whereabouts or his strategy to find the Gabriel, said his office has been receiving 70 tips a day for the last week on the “Baby Gabriel” case that has received national attention.

“My feelings about the child, my gut feeling, is that he’s still alive,” Armes said. “I have no thought otherwise. There have been no clues that the baby is dead. I’m very optimistic that we’re close to finding him. If we do this investigation right, it’ll come out right.”

McQueary has told the Tribune he has taken leave of absence from his job stocking shelves at a store in Tempe while he searches for clues in the case. He currently is in San Antonio with relatives. He also is passing out flyers featuring pictures of Gabriel.

Police began excavating a landfill in search of a body or other evidence in the disappearance of an 8-month-old Arizona boy who was last seen with his mother at a San Antonio hotel on the day after Christmas.

Police Chief William McManus said Tuesday that authorities began the arduous task of digging down through 45 feet of trash with hazardous material crews and cadaver dogs standing by. It will take at least six days to dig to the layer containing trash from the hotel. The hotel's trash, which is in a section that's been cordoned off for weeks, will be recovered and carefully sifted, he said.

Published February 13, 2010
<snipped>
Tammi Peters Smith has become a celebrity of sorts in the case of missing baby Gabriel Johnson because of her involvement with Gabriel's parents— Elizabeth Johnson and ex-boyfriend Logan McQueary— and with Baby Gabriel, who went missing on December 27, 2009 in Texas after his mother kidnapped from Arizona. As a celebrity, if an infamous one, Smith's life has become an open book.

Tammi Peters Smith has one court case against her for the charges Forgery and Conspiracy to Commit Custodial Interference. She was also charged with Custodial Interference but that charge was soon dropped because there was yet insufficient evidence for prosecution. However, it may have been reinstated. All three charges are Class 4 felonies. Smith may have accrued traffic violations in December 2009 and January 2010.

What matters most about anti-heroine Tammi Smith is her cooperation with Law Enforcement (LE) attempts to locate missing Baby Gabriel Johnson. LE believe she has withheld information. Search for 'Baby Gabriel' could enter second phase
Web Posted: 02/17/2010 12:09 CST
<snipped>
During the second phase, authorities will begin “sifting through layers of garbage in search of possible evidence,” according to a department media advisory released last week.

The baby's father, Logan McQueary, returned to Arizona after spending about a week in San Antonio searching for clues in his son's disappearance, said Jay J. Armes, the El Paso private investigator who took on the case earlier this month.

McQueary could not be reached late Tuesday, but Armes said he has been speaking with the father daily. Armes said McQueary was “very optimistic” about his search in San Antonio and that he and McQueary are planning to return soon.

He also said he's been getting up to 70 “good leads” each day, some that have led the investigation into Mexico.

“We have a good feeling the boy's still alive,” Armes said.

Fundraiser to benefit father of missing baby
February 17, 2010 - 8:41PM
<snipped>
Beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Manny’s Mexican and American Restaurant, 12345 W. Indian School Road in Avondale, will host a fundraiser for the family of Logan McQueary, Gabriel’s father, who is continuing to search for clues that can possibly lead him to Gabriel.

The fundraiser will last through Sunday.

Up to a $5,000 reward is being offered to information that can lead to Gabriel’s Safe Return by Crime Stoppers in San Antonio.

The restaurant will donate a portion of its revenue through Sunday to the McQueary family as there will be a Kurt Warner autographed football raffled off as well as other door prizes and raffles.

Raffle tickets for the Kurt Warner autographed football are $5 each.

The proceeds from the restaurant, the raffles and tips from a disc jockey playing music over the weekend, will go to the McQueary family and toward raising the reward.

McQueary, who now lives in Gilbert with his father, will fly to San Antonio on Saturday where authorities are scheduled to begin the second phase of a landfill search on Thursday for the baby’s remains or evidence. An initial excavation of a portion of the landfill going down 45 feet deep was completed this week.

“I’m just sitting back and seeing what happens,” McQueary said. “I’m pretty nervous and curious at the same time. I want this to be over with. I don’t believe Gabriel is there.”

Baby Gabriel Landfill Search Enters Phase 2
More Evidence Points To Gabriel Alive

POSTED: 11:05 pm MST February 17, 2010
UPDATED: 6:46 am MST February 18, 2010
<snipped>
After removing 30 feet and nearly 45 thousand tons of debris from a nearby landfill, San Antonio police are ready to begin phase two of their search for baby Gabriel Johnson. A total of 35 workers will comb through the next layer of waste by hand and use cadaver dogs to see if Johnson's original confession is true.

"I'm not really worried about it that much because I don't think Gabriel is there at all," said Logan McQueary, Gabriel's father. He says he discovered several reasons to believe Johnson went to Texas to sell Gabriel, not kill him. "It's looking like Elizabeth handed him off to somebody, and I don't think Elizabeth did what she said. I think she just said that to hurt me," said McQueary.

McQueary pointed to new evidence that Johnson was arrested with a ruby and diamond ring worth approximately $20,000 in her pocket. He lived with her for two years, but he had never seen it before. "Sometimes when they give the baby away for adoption, they hand over a piece of jewelry to the mother or someone who is handing over the baby as a payment instead of money," said McQueary.

Where did a woman who couldn't afford a car, and worked only low paying jobs, get a ring like that? Those questions, and the surfacing evidence of an underground adoption, are more reasons why McQueary said he won't give up hope. "I'm gonna keep searching, until they prove me wrong. Gabriel is still out there. He got handed off to somebody and we're gonna find him," said McQueary.

Texas Mum On Baby Gabriel's Amber Alert
POSTED: 6:37 pm MST February 16, 2010
UPDATED: 10:58 am MST February 17, 2010
<snipped>
Six weeks after a Valley baby was kidnapped and taken to San Antonio, Texas, officials there still refuse to reveal why they denied a Tempe police request to issue an Amber Alert.

A letter formally requesting the information was sent to Texas DPS. The letter cited Texas public records laws and the public's right to know as reasons for them to release the information.

DPS asked the Texas attorney general for a legal opinion, who in a letter supported the Texas DPS decision to withhold the information, also citing Texas law.

Tempe police also asked The Arizona Department of Public Safety to issue an Amber Alert. Arizona DPS also declined.

An Arizona DPS spokesman explained the information relayed by Tempe police did not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert. He also said the baby was already known to be in another state.

Expensive ring may prove Baby Gabriel is alive and adopted, father says
Posted on February 18, 2010 at 8:44 AM
Updated today at 9:07 AM
<snipped>
Logan McQueary does not put much stock in claims his son may be a murder victim.

The distraught father bases his belief on several clues he's dug up on his own. The most recent revelation is a $20,000 ruby and diamond ring. She reportedly had it in her pocket when she was arrested.

"Sometimes when they give the baby away for adoption they hand over jewelry to the mother," he said. McQueary believes that unlike cash, the trail for pawned jewelry is more difficult to trace. He's still trying to figure out who gave her the ring.

The Arizona father said Elizabeth had low-paying jobs. In addition, McQueary said in the two years they lived together he never saw that ring.

The expensive piece of jewelry was allegedly handed over to Johnson's grandfather, Arizona authorities said. However, McQueary said the grandfather denies any knowledge of the ring.

"I'm gonna keep searching until they prove me wrong," he said. "Gabriel's still out there. He got handed off to somebody, and we're going to find him."
