Alfredo Blanco pretrial hearing set for Jan. 2

At Monday’s hearing, defense attorney Robin Puchek requested written and oral statements of co-defendant Bill Sanders, who was a friend of Blanco and eventually led FBI and Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies to Cranston’s body in January.

Puchek also requested production of specific items, email history, statements from jailhouse informants and other witnesses. He wants to identify admissibility of depositions, materials and witness interviews, zeroing in on the admissibility of polygraph evidence of Sanders.

“We’re still way off from trial,” Puchek told the judge.

Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert set a May 8 trial date for Alfredo Gerardo Blanco, accused of first-degree murder of local real estate agent Sidney Cranston Jr.

Prosecuting attorney Bob Moon said he’s still waiting for final DNA analysis, but from discussions he’s had with laboratory technicians, he sees no problem verifying the identity of the victim.

Lambert also ordered a pretrial conference for Jan. 29 and final management hearing on April 23.

The trial date for Alfredo Blanco, who is accused of first-degree murder, was moved back one week to May 15 and could be delayed until July depending on progress at the next evidentiary hearing.

Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert set a March 23 evidentiary hearing on a motion to suppress comments made by the defendant when he was arrested Jan. 11, 2017, at a rehabilitation facility in the Phoenix area.

William Sanders, an acquaintance of Blanco who led police to Cranston’s body, will be one of the key witnesses. He’s charged with concealment of a dead body and tampering with physical evidence.

William Glen Sanders, 55, pleaded guilty to concealing a dead body. He also had been charged with tampering with physical evidence, a charge that was dismissed.

Under the plea agreement, Sanders will be sentenced to supervised probation.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Bob Moon also said Sanders agreed to a testimony agreement in which he will testify at Blanco’s trial. If Sanders doesn’t testify, or if he testifies untruthfully, Moon said he will withdraw the plea agreement.

Blanco’s attorney, Robin Puchek, argued to suppress statements Blanco made to police during a January 2017 interview. Puchek argued that police violated Blanco’s Miranda rights by not reading his rights, including that he had a right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.

Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert denied Puchek’s motion to suppress Blanco’s statements to police at his trial, and postponed the trial to Sept. 25.

Witness interviews holding up Blanco murder trial

The first-degree murder trial for suspected killer Alfredo Gerardo Blanco is on schedule for Sept. 25 in Mohave County Superior Court, though it may be delayed a week if witness interviews are not finished by that time, prosecuting attorney Bob Moon said Tuesday at a pretrial hearing.

In a 10-minute hearing before Judge Rick Lambert, Moon said he asked defense attorney Robin Puchek for possible dates on conducting the interviews, but had not received a response.

KINGMAN – Mohave County Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert declared a mistrial Thursday, three days into the first-degree murder trial of Alfredo Gerardo Blanco, after a key witness made a statement about inadmissible evidence.

Bill Sanders, who pleaded guilty to concealment of a dead body and tampering with evidence in exchange for his testimony, was recounting a telephone conversation he had with Blanco following an FBI interview on Jan. 6, 2017, when he made the statement. He was being questioned by prosecuting attorney Bob Moon.

Defense attorney Robin Puchek objected and asked for the mistrial. Lambert called both attorneys into his chambers and dismissed the jury, and after about 15 minutes, came back with his order continuing the jury trial until Nov. 27.

UPDATE: Judge declares mistrial in Blanco murder case

Jeez, I don't think i even knew there was an arrest made. Fingers crossed this pair spend the rest of their days behind bars.

Some evidence has been ruled inadmissable because it would taint the jury's opinion 'unfairly'. It was referred to inadvertently by a witness for the prosecution (who undoubtedly had been coached not to say it, I assume this witness is not the brightest).

A mistrial simply means the trial will start over with a new jury.

The inadmissable evidence, IMO, would possibly be gossip or unproven allegations that would be prejudicial to Blanco. For a wild example 'I heard he killed a guy in 1995'.
