Greeley police: Bones discovered at oil and gas site are remains of Jonelle Matthews

After 34 years, seven months and five days of searching, the Greeley Police Department announced Thursday morning bones discovered earlier this week at an oil and gas site in rural Weld County are the remains of Jonelle Matthews.

Matthews disappeared Dec. 20, 1984, after performing in a Christmas concert with the Franklin Middle School Honor Choir in Greeley. She was last seen about 8 p.m. that night when she was dropped off at her home at 320 43rd Ave. Court by a friend and her friend’s father.

Investigators say they have finally identified the victim in a decades-old murder case.

The 38-year-long mystery is widely known at the "Belle in the Well" case. A woman's body was found in a covered well in Chesapeake, Ohio, on April 22, 1981. Investigators said she was strangled and could have been in the well -- located in a rural part of Lawrence County -- for up to two years.

Shooter is dead. There were metal detectors and fences. Shooter walked through a creek bed, cut a fence, entered the festival. One of the three dead is a 6 year old boy. So sad.
