Madeleine McCann mystery: UK police say 6 more intruder cases may be linked

By Laura Smith-Spark, CNN

updated 9:45 AM EDT, Wed April 23, 2014

(CNN) -- Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal are looking at six more cases where a male intruder entered holiday villas where children were staying, police said Wednesday.

The development means there are now 18 potentially linked crimes at resorts near where the 3-year-old vanished in June 2007, London's Metropolitan Police said.

Children were sexually assaulted by the intruder in half of those cases.

Madeleine's disappearance while on a family vacation in the Portuguese resort town of Praia da Luz prompted headlines worldwide -- and remains a mystery...

Priest, administrator indicted, accused of $700K theft from Troy parish

Robert Snell/The Detroit News

Detroit — A Catholic priest and a parish administrator were indicted and accused of stealing almost $700,000 from St. Thomas More Church in Troy and blowing the cash on a condominium and other expenses.

The five-count indictment, announced Wednesday, charges the Rev. Edward Belczak, 69, of Troy and Janice Verschuren, 67, of Bloomfield Hills with stealing the money from the church and Archdiocese of Detroit between 2004 and 2012.

The stolen money allegedly included most of a $350,000 gift to the church from the family of a dead parishioner and cash donated by churchgoers during special Mother’s Day and Father’s Day collections, prosecutors alleged.

The duo tried to hide the alleged crime by creating false documents and submitting them to the Archdiocese, prosecutors allege. The documents under-reported the amount of the parish’s operating receipts.

Belczak and Verschuren face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of charges that include conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud...

Grateful Dead Fan Remains Nameless, 18 Years After Fatal Crash

Today, nearly 20 years after his death, the story of "Grateful Doe," or "Jason Doe" as he is sometimes called, would likely be all but forgotten were it not for members of Websleuths, an online community of volunteers who brainstorm unsolved mysteries. For the past several years, multiple Websleuths members, including two known as "Killarney Rose" and "Rainwater," have picked apart the case and helped raise awareness about it on social media.
"He was someone's son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle [and] it is so hard to believe that in this day and time that no one can identify him," Killarney Rose told HuffPost, explaining why she is dedicated to the case.
"Although Grateful Dead fans may not know each other's names, at a Dead concert all are members of the same family for magical hours," Rainwater said. "We want to see this family member given back his name."

Amanda Knox Fought With Meredith Kercher Before Killing: Court

Amanda Knox slit her British roommate's throat shortly after the pair had a heated argument about money, the Italian court that convicted her of the killing said Tuesday.

Meredith Kercher, 21, was killed by multiple attackers, including Knox's boyfriend Rafaelle Sollecito and small-time drug dealer Rudy Guede, but it was Knox “who lashed the deadly wound to the throat,” the appellate court in Florence said.

The fight with Kercher became increasingly aggressive, the judges said in their 337-page explanation for the January guilty verdicts against the American student and her former boyfriend. The explanation added that the group had gathered to use drugs before the 2007 murder...

Italian court explains Amanda Knox conviction

By CNN Staff

updated 1:53 PM EDT, Tue April 29, 2014

(CNN) -- An Italian court says it convicted Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend of murdering her onetime roommate in part because of evidence showing that more than one person killed the British student.

The Florence appeals court released its explanation Tuesday, less than three months after it convicted Knox and Raffaele Sollecito in Meredith Kercher's 2007 death in a retrial.

In the more than 300-page document, the court said that a third person convicted in the murder, Rudy Guede, did not act alone, and cited the nature of the victim's wounds...
