I find it odd that he went to the cemetery initially with the intent to bury her, then realized his wounds were too severe or painful to get it done. SO he hides her under some branches along a tree line. Then returns with the intent to bury her. We can't know everything, but its odd that he was so determined to get her buried. I wonder what this says about him. He could have tucked her away in the tree line as he did and just left it at that. But no, he returned. Furthermore, I find it totally nuts that he dumped the bike at Whiskey Bay at 11am. Per ChickenFried, that HAD to be difficult with fisherman and the heavily trafficked interstate right above. No matter how many answers there are, we will always have more questions. Sigh.

maybe he thought she would be found if she was not buried and evidence linking him would also be found. a real risk going back though.

and yes huge risk dropping the bike at 11am. wonder what made him choose WB?

Have you ever been waiting for an elevator trying to go down, and you just take the one going up to ensure a spot going down?

After leaving the hearing I waited for the elevator. The first one loaded up and I had to wait for the return. When it came back, it was headed up, so I jumped on. Then in comes the prosecution team. Doors close and I'm listening and feeling the vibe.

I said "awesome job guys!" They all smiled, joked and were very jovial. Discussed the caseload in front of them, basicially indicating no rest for the weary. They get off on the 5th or 6th floor, doors close, elevator heads back down with just me.

Next stop 4 floor again, in comes the defense team and the Judge. I felt like the proverbial fly on the wall! The judge looked around and said "That went well!" And the defense team knodded. That was the consensus on the elevator today at noon.

And as Paul Harvey used to say "And that my friends, is the rest of the story!"

Now this is true investigative reporting.

Thank you.

http://www.katc.com/news/lavergne-transported-to-angola/

Only hours after pleading guilty to the murders of Lisa Pate and Mickey Shunick, Brandon Scott Lavergne is in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Officials in the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed deputies transported Lavergne to Angola shortly after this morning's hearing. According to the Louisiana Automated Victims' Notification System, Lavergne was released into the state's custody at 1:27 P. M.
:jail:

Would love to see them fire up Gruesome Gertie one more time, for old times sake.

Well, maybe 2 more times. One for DTL (on death row at Angola now) and one for BSL.

I think that first he thought up the "gas-station attack" lie, to explain his wounds, because New Orleans is known as a very unsafe place. Then, he realized that Whiskey Bay was on the way, and how quick and easy it is to dump things. Seems to me he was in a hurry, and so wanted somewhere directly on the way. He obviously failed Earth Science class, and didn't realize that the river would drop. There was really no advantage to the bike's being found, even as a ruse. It gave clues that she was hit by a vehicle, and things unraveled from there.

And so ends my stay here. Sleuth on, everyone.

Hopefully we may all rest a little better knowing that all of us helped in some small or large way to tighten the knot on his noose.

I wish him a better end than he gave to Mickey and Lisa.

FIND MICKEY SHUNICK NOW
Mickey Shunick is a hero and will always be remembered as a hero.

Am I weird for being upset they did not spell her name correctly in the document? She is my Hero and deserves to have her name live on forever.

And now we have an acutual signature of BSL.....

I wonder if we will ever learn as to exactly what the State's evidence was in the case? We have only been given a little from the Disclosure document previously filed by the State. All documents filed are of public record but since there was no actual "discovery phase", I feel like all we will ever know is what was detailed in Plea document. Apparently, they had enough evidence to convince BSL to plead guilty.

Psychopaths are very creative, calculating, and deflective. The reason that BS Lavergne placed the bicycle at whiskey Bay was to deflect. It was due to Whiskey Bays tragic DTL history & to misdirect the investigation, imo..
Otherwise he would have placed it in the grave with Mickey.

Don't know why I know how psychopaths think, CF. Some folks say it is a gift. I think of it as a curse..
Notice that my spelling of Mickey Shunick has improved?
The prosecution strategy used today in the evidentiary hearing was the Green River serial killer prosecution strategy...

I think we can be assured that some details were left out. For instance, unless there was semen found on Mickey's or Lisa's clothes (it would have degraded with the advanced decomposition of the bodies), there would be no reason to say that these women were sexually assaulted.

The fact that he was calling escort services (basically prostitutes, as there have been stings done on these businesses in the past which resulted in prostitution charges), and the fact that he was heading towards 4 Corners on University (a known crack prostitute area) before coming across Mickey tells me that the underlying motive wasn't to kill per se, but for sexual gratification.
Well, the document says that Lisa stayed with him for several days, and the way it's worded sounds to me like it was consensual. It wasn't until she wanted to leave to see her children and he refused to let her use his truck etc that he lost it and was beaten to death. I wonder if he was planning on killing her all along...

Ok, I'm home now. I was there, scribbling away. Here is what Stutes said regarding Mickey:

She was seen on video on Ryan St. and on St. John @ intersection with University. She crossed over University to St. Landry at 1:48 a.m. BSL was driving south on University on the inside lane. He moved to the outside lane of University and took a quick turn onto St. Landry. He was driving around calling escort services and headed toward Blackham. He followed Mickey through a residential area, and about midway between Dean & Colesieum, he struck Mickey. She was thrown from her bike. He had a knife and a semi-automatic handgun in his truck. He approached her and told her to get in the truck. He either enticed, persuaded, or forced her into the front passenger's seat and put the bike in the bed of his truck. He drove to many other places (which were not stated). She grabbed her cellphone to call for help, he pulled the knife out, she sprayed him with mace, he got the mace, she got his knife and stabbed him, causing 'life-threatening wounds' and cut tendons on his hand/finger(s). He got the knife back and stabbed her 4 times. She fell over. He drove 30-40 minutes away to a sugarcane field where he was going to dispose of her and leave. She jumped up after having gotten the knife again and stabbed him in the chest. He shot her in the head, killing her instantly. He drove home with her in the passenger seat. He cleaned up and took her to the cemetery, but he couldn't dig because his hand was too badly injured. He then hid her body in the tree line and covered her with leaves and branches and drove home. At 8 the next morning, he called a friend in NOLA and left at 11 a.m. to go visit said friend. On the way, he threw the bike in the water and threw the knife in a dumpster in NOLA. (I couldn't hear what was said about the gun, if anything). On May 20, he returned from NOLA and went to the cemetery where he buried Mickey. He then went back home and burned evidence, including her book bag, and disposed of her Ipod.

God Bless God Bless God Bless that little girl and her family. She fought like the dickens.

Shout out to a fellow WSer who sat behind me!

I am home now, too, txlams.I don't know if you are referring bout me. Dont matter. Somber and speechless. My gut hurts and I did not expect this tortured feeling. I only want to comment at the moment on Mrs. Shunick. I eyed her more closely than anyone...drawing faith and inspiration. The hero, the butterfly, the mighty Ms. Mickey...so easily reflected in her mother today. Also...on the Brandon Lavergne right side of the courtroom, with 3 front 'family' rows reserved...no one. I am literally quite sick right now.

The fight was more prolonged than I expected.... and she fought a lot harder... to grab his knife twice and then mace him. What was his problem that he couldn't keep ahold of his knife?

Maybe the answer is that he was holding her at knifepoint instead of gunpoint. Holding her at knifepoint kept the knife within her reach.

But how did she get it the second time? A holster on his belt? Not understanding how he let her grab it again, after she grabbed it once.

I agree with you - feeling so sorry for what she endured - and so glad she made him pay.

Yes, I wondered that too - how did Mickey get hold of the knife a second time? Two possibilities here that I can think of right now: 1. Thinking Mickey was unconscious, he put down the knife beside her as he began to attempt rape - and she was able to grab his knife, or 2. She had her own little knife or box cutter at the ready. That all makes sense, CF. Now that we know his wounds were, indeed, serious, I would imagine the pain and fear affected his reasoning and led to hasty, miscalculated decisions. Otherwise, he might have been succesful at getting away with murder Again.

Rock on, Mickey! You took the beast down, and avenged your own murder and Lisa's, too.
