The Latest: Man to be freed in Bulgarian journalist probe

A senior Bulgarian police officer says authorities will release a man taken into custody and he won’t be charged in connection with the slaying of a journalist who highlighted suspected government corruption.

Teodor Atanassov, chief police officer of the northern town of Ruse, told reporters Tuesday that the man, who wasn’t identified, would be freed “very shortly.” He declined to provide further details on the ongoing investigation.

Arrest in Germany.

A Bulgarian man has been detained in Germany on suspicion of the rape and murder of the television journalist Viktoria Marinova, Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor has said.

Authorities in Bulgaria said an arrest warrant was being issued for the 21-year-old man, who would be charged in absentia with rape and murder.

Bulgaria’s prosecutor general, Sotir Tsatsarov, confirmed the arrest of a man, whom his office named as Severin Krasimirov, a Bulgarian citizen.
The country’s interior minister, Mladen Marinov, said there was physical evidence to link Krasimirov to the murder. Krasimirov, a resident of Ruse, had a criminal record for scrap metal theft, he said. The minister said investigators had spoken to the journalist’s family and friends and added: “There is no apparent link to her work.”

Bulgarian officials say a man named Severin Krasimirov has been detained at their request.

The country's Interior Minister, Mladen Marinov, said the suspect was a DNA match for evidence recovered at the crime scene.

Current evidence does not suggest the attack was linked to Ms Marinova's work as a journalist, officials said.

SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgarian authorities on Wednesday arrested and charged a man in his early 20s in the rape and killing of journalist Viktoria Marinova, a case that sent shock waves through Europe and triggered anxieties about press freedom around the world.

Authorities are now saying that the motive was probably sexual assault, not an attack on a journalist, although the investigation is ongoing.

The man was detained in Germany and has since been charged with rape and murder.

“Bulgaria is the most corrupt member state in the E.U., according to global corruption watchdog Transparency International. It also ranks 111 out of 180 in terms of press freedom, the lowest in the E.U., according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a French organization devoted to the protection of journalists.”

For anyone who cannot read this or cannot translate, this basically says that they found Severin Krasimirov's blood on Viktoria's clothing and that it was a 100% match. It also says that he fled from Bulgaria to Germany after the killing - on the advice of his family none the less! They connected him to the murder as he was caught on surveillance cameras in the same area.

There will be a Wednesday morning presser... it's now Wednesday afternoon in Bulgaria so that should have already happened but I don't have time to look yet.

Seems coincidental for that to be a sexual attack rather than an attack on a journalist.

Thank you for being here, ima.

Suspicions remain

This murder has shocked the country and reignited the debate about freedom of the media in Bulgaria.

Despite investigators downplaying – if not ruling out – the possibility of the crime being related to Ms Marinova's work, fellow journalists point out that there are deep suspicions about a political dimension. That is because of a "terrible" media atmosphere where the harassment of journalists is common.

Journalist Albena Bachvarova writes in ClubZ.bg that despite calls from Europe for a swift investigation, it remains to be seen if Brussels will maintain pressure on Bulgaria – or whether it will go back on focusing on bigger problems, like Hungary and Poland.

She was the third high-profile journalist to be murdered in the EU in the past year:

On Monday, hundreds of mourners in Bulgaria held vigils for Ms Marinova.

But Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borissov defended his country's record, insisting that journalists were free to report in Bulgaria.

"In three days, I've read monstrous things about Bulgaria - none of them are true," he said of the global reporting on Ms Marinova's murder.

Bulgarian Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov said on Wednesday that the motive was likely sexual assault and "at this stage, it can not be said that the murder is related to the professional activity of the victim."

"Again a courageous journalist falls in the fight for truth and against corruption," tweeted European Union Vice President Frans Timmermans on Sunday. "Those responsible should be brought to justice immediately by the Bulgarian authorities."

Another leader in the European Parliament called on Europol to stand ready to assist in investigating Marinova's death.

"I have read monstrous things about Bulgaria and none of those is true," Borissov said. "It is completely undeserved that our country was tarnished in such a way in a matter of days while everyone was working at 100 percent."

Reporters Without Borders says journalists in Bulgaria are "exposed to many forms of pressure and intimidation when trying to perform their reporting duties." It ranksBulgaria last in the EU for press freedom.

@yurena - Is this being discussed much between those you know in Sofia? I have had talks with friends and family back in Sofia and news travels fast. I have to say, that much of them feel pretty upset with the way Bulgaria has been perceived after this news... not that there isn't a problem, there really is but I wonder (and worried) how the news is being received around the world.
