To be honest, mafia is a serious organization and usually assassinated journalists and politicians are not raped. They are shot, they are poisoned, blown up, but raped? Leaving a lot of DNA at the day and age when everyone knows about DNA?

In some countries, mafia groups use street gangs as "farm teams". Gang members are then promoted up to mafia group proper if they are deemed to be intelligent and capable. Likewise, the street gang serves as a pool of people that can be tapped for assignments that the mafia group proper finds too distasteful, risky etc.

There could be a chance that the mafia group "farmed out" the murder to a street gang. The gang members then commit the crime of rape in addition to murder because they are not too bright, or they let their animal instincts (no disrespect of actual animals) take over.

As a side note, US Chinese tong groups often routinely used an affiliated street gang for dirty work and day to day bill collecting etc. In contrast, I don't think the Italian groups really practiced this street gang / farm team model on a large scale. Street gangs were generally seen by them as too 'low brow' and too unreliable.
