“The more powerful message, though, came a few minutes later in the keynote address in the form of a new platform called CareKit, which would let developers introduce health care apps capable of monitoring a wealth of information though Apple devices. The kind of data that you’d want to guard as closely as your own heartbeat.

Your Body’s Secrets

CareKit is best seen as a close cousin to ResearchKit, a platform Apple introduced last year that helped research institutions implement large-scale studies through the use of iOS devices. CareKit applies that same motivation to the individual level.

“We believe that giving individuals the tools to understand what is happening with their health is incredibly powerful,” says Apple COO Jeff Williams. “Apps designed using CareKit make this a reality by empowering people to take a more active role in their care.””

I watched the entire presentation and this and the ResearchKit were both new to me and Wired has it right, imo.

And, a further thought I have had for a number of days now is I believe in the documents that have been released in the Malheur Refuge takeover case, there was reference to some FBI/LE Dispatch conversations during the Finicum situation that were encrypted and thus couldn't be unencrypted for public scrutiny (or something along those lines). So, what's the saying about 'wanting your cake and eating it too'?

I might take some time today to see if I can find that set of documents again. Maybe someone else who has followed that case will remember?

FBI Ends Legal Battle With Apple After Unlocking San Bernardino Gunman’s iPhone

The Department of Justice says the FBI has accessed the iPhone used by one of the gunmen in the San Bernardino terrorist shooting.

Law enforcement officials were able to break into the phone used by Syed Farook with the help of an unnamed third party.

“The FBI has now successfully retrieved the data stored on the San Bernardino terrorist’s iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple required by this Court Order,” DOJ spokeswoman Melanie Newman said in a statement.

DOJ Says It Hacked Into Encrypted iPhone — Without Apple’s Help
The Feds withdrew legal action that would have forced Apple to help crack open an iPhone from the San Bernardino shooting.

“SAN FRANCISCO, March 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department dropped a high-stakes legal fight against Apple on Monday, saying the government successfully accessed data stored on an encrypted iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters.

The government had insisted until last week it had no way to access the phone used by Rizwan Farook except to force Apple to write new software that would disable the password protection.

The Justice Department obtained a court order last month directing Apple to create that software. But the technology company fought back, arguing the order was an overreach by the government and would undermine computer security for everyone.”

Just my personal opinion, I don't believe that they cracked the code. It's my opinion that they (gov) wanted apple to cave on the threat of court. The gov has been trying to get into (the back door) on multiple iphones for awhile now. All just my opinion.

The quest for an unbreakable phone is 'impossible,' says Apple

The FBI ultimately was able to access that phone without Apple's assistance. But it has not disclosed the method or who helped do it.

Apple engineers think the government should share what they've learned.

"We would love to know what this mechanism is so that we could address it and fix it in our product... it goes without saying normal practices are to let the manufacturer know so it's fixed for all the customers," said the Apple engineer.

That's one reason the company fought so hard against the government's request to create special software that would help them access the iPhone used by the San Bernardino terrorist -- a move that Apple said would ultimately weaken security.

I don't think the FBI is going to find anything important or of any value on that work phone. And, I doubt they will tell if they do or they don't.

Maybe Apple should hire the same hacker the FBI hired.

I don't think that there is anything on/in that iphone that is important either. I am skeptical that it was hacked. It's my opinion that the whole taking them to court was nothing more then a scare tactic that didn't work.jmo

The FBI is reportedly still analyzing Syed Farook’s iPhone, but there’s been a lot of drama about whether or not the FBI is using Cellebrite to crack the encrypted San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone.

Some news outlets such as Patently Apple suggested that the FBI asking for a delay in the case could be related to the FBI’s $15,278.02 purchase order with Cellebrite dated March 21.

The indictment charges all three in a conspiracy to knowingly make false statements under oath with respect to immigration documents, a charge that carries a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. Chernykh also faces a charge of document fraud, perjury and two counts of lying to federal agents. Those charges carry a combined maximum sentence of 25 years.

bbm I hope the max is imposed.

Autopsies released Friday of the 14 victims of the San Bernardino terror attack confirm that all died quickly after being shot at least twice but also reveal chilling details of the carnage.

San Bernardino County released the heavily redacted autopsies as part of a public records request by The Associated Press.

(...)

The autopsies of the husband-and-wife killers were not released Friday. County spokesman David Wert said their death investigations had not been finished and had no estimate of when they would be ready.

I am so glad they are blocking the life insurance payout. One should not be allowed to slaughter 14 innocents, then die by police, and collect insurance on it. That is pathetic.

The federal bureaucrat who blocked armed law enforcement agents from apprehending a man involved in the San Bernardino terror attack last December, then allegedly lied to investigators about her actions, has been reassigned to another post, but likely won't face further investigation, FoxNews.com has learned.
