Escondido police to invite FBI to review Dubois case

ESCONDIDO – Escondido police plan to ask the FBI to review the case of missing 14-year-old Amber Dubois over the next few weeks as the investigation enters its fourth month, a spokesman said.

After meeting with the Amber's parents Wednesday morning, police decided to invite the FBI and the nonprofit National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to review about 15 binders of documents, Lt. Craig Carter said.

“It makes sense, we have no issue with that,” Carter said. “We will reach out to both those agencies.”

Carter said he hopes the review will be finished in the next few weeks. Both the FBI and the national center have been involved in the search for Amber since the early stages, he said, but police are hoping they might find something that may have been overlooked.

“I'm all for it,” said Amber's father, Maurice Dubois. “We want our daughter home. In our opinion, whatever can be done should be done.”

According to this article there were about 200 tips received on the truck but the tips have not led to any suspects. Does that mean LE has already followed up on all 200 tips in 2-1/2 weeks or is that still in progress? What exactly does the follow up include I wonder? How thorough is it?

Also, every article published now about Amber should also include a pic of truck and link to video. It's not just a plain truck (at least it wasn't on Feb 13) - it appears to have a number of accessories and a truck enthusiast (truck expert) could be useful. There are a number of forums where these enthusiasts post about various truck accessories they've added, stuff they are selling, general discussions, etc.

Police have received hundreds of tips. About 200 concerned a maroon or burgundy pickup recorded by a surveillance camera near Escondido High on Feb. 13, around the time Amber disappeared while headed to school. The tips have not led to any suspects.

Vigil Marks Three Months Since Amber Disappeared

See video at link.

In video they say police are still looking over some 150 leads on truck. Lt. Carter says they are going one by one, eliminating trucks they have info on.

Cloudajo, thank you for snipping part of the Union Tribune article...I don't know how to do that and post the link too. Thank you for posting the other article too.

It is great that there have been so many tips that have come in about the truck. Let's hope something comes out of those tips.

It is so frustrating that she has not been found. Geez, I can't EVEN imagine how her parents feel.

One of the problems I see in getting any leads on the truck is red pick up trucks are very common in North San Diego County. I live just north of Escondido. A lot of the landscapers use them. One day I saw four in a two block radius.

I'm glad the FBI is going to be reviewing this case. I think a fresh set of eyes always is helpful when there is no progress on a case.

You're welcome. Agree, I can't even imagine.

You can hold down your left mouse button and drag it across the text in the article you want to copy. Then hit Ctrl + C on your keyboard to copy. Then go to the WS post and hit Ctrl + V to paste the text into the post.

I hear what you're saying about lots of red pickup trucks, but I think it's the unique qualities of this truck that need to be highlighted and focused on:
  • Chrome Running Boards
  • Chrome Bed Rails
  • Chrome Wheels
  • Tailgate missing or modified to accomodate a 5th wheel trailer
  • Not a bright red color, but a maroon/burgundy/dark red color
Plus, if they did get 150 leads on the truck then it's a place to start and eliminate. I'd keep pushing to have the truck pic/description out there right along with Amber's pic (on her website, on the posters, on Craigslist, etc.). Some alert person might notice something and call in a tip that leads to something.

Cloudajo you're right about it being unique. The trucks I've seen have not had the running boards, bed rails, or the tailgate modified. I'm looking whenever I see a truck like this. I agree there needs to be photos of this truck posted every possible place they can especially on the website.

Great. The only other thing to keep in mind is that the person could have removed/changed the truck since Feb 13. Those accessories can be removed/changed, truck painted, truck sold, etc. I see those accessories for sale as parts on various internet sites. I was hoping that if the pic is widely distributed/publicized, someone might see it and think, I know a guy that has/had a truck like that...with the chrome accessories, with the modified or black tailgate...and call in a tip.

I realize this could have been random, but I too would like to know more about the construction work going on. Construction trucks were parked toward the school gates on west side. Was the construction going on at the high school itself? If so, for how long? How many workers? Same company, any turnover? Did workers usually start at 7-7:30AM? Did any of the workers get fired or quit before Feb 13? Did any not show up for work on Feb 13 or the days after? (Note that Feb 13 was a Friday, and Monday, Feb 16 was a school holiday.)

A notice from the high school dated Aug, 2008 said the construction of their campus Learning Center was underway and was anticipated to be completed sometime in the spring (of 2009). The notice contains various drop off and parking instructions (link below). Was this the same/only work going on?

· Police have said construction trucks were parked south of that driveway, toward the school gates, which would have blocked passersby from seeing much of the sidewalk where Amber would have been walking.

· No parents, construction workers or school employees remember ever seeing the truck before or after Amber's disappearance.

Sorry if this is a dumb question..but could Amber's disapperance be connected to the toddler just found in Mexico? How far is the area where the toddler was found in Mexico to where Amber went missing from??

Thanks Nancy..then I hope they are checking into this..if one kid was recently taken into Mexico, it's not a stretch to think Amber was taken by the same people or associates...

There have been quite a few attempted kidnappings of young girls and women near Escondido that could be related to criminal activity in Mexico. There are also a number of illegal camps in San Diego County that bring girls as young as 12 from Mexico to work as prostitutes.

Brwni, did they say who took the little boy to begin with?

"Amber's Lamb" To Be Auctioned

The day 14-year old Amber Dubois disappeared, she was carrying a check for $200 to buy a lamb. She never made the purchase.

Amber vanished on February 13th as she walked to Escondido High School and hasn't been seen since. But what has become of the lamb, who Amber had named 'Nanette'?

In the month's that Amber disappeared, Nanette has been cared for by the Agricultural club at Escondido High School, according to Amber's father Maurice Dubois. The school has incurred the cost of boarding and caring for the lamb.

Now, the plan is for the lamb to be auctioned off at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar. Any profits made from the sale will be given to the Amber Search Center.

Amber's cell phone was turned on briefly Saturday afternoon. I read the ping they got was off a cell phone tower in North Escondido and also that it was narrowed to a 5 mile radius. So not an exact location but a general area.

Let's assume the pickup truck was involved. After exiting the driveway onto Broadway, what would be a likely route to get to North Escondido?

How about a group of searchers drive, bike, or walks the likely route(s) with pics of truck, and stops along the way to ask people if they saw this truck as well as at any businesses along the way (e.g. gas stations, etc.) that may have video cameras?

Maybe that's already been done.
