A man was found dead of gunshot wound on hiking trail. He was still holding the leash of his dog, which was also shot but survived.

The victim is believed to have driven to the trail near Fairfax, California, in his silver 2003 Volkswagen Jetta station wagon, Pittman said. The car was missing and believed to have been stolen by the killer.

BBM The car is still missing.

Sadly, the Carters have seen a lot of tragedy recently. The victim's wife, Lokita has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer. A retreat they owned burned down during the wildfire in Northern Cal last month.

3 People Sought for Questioning in Hiking Trail Killing

Detectives are looking for three persons of interest in the killing of a man found shot to death on a Northern California hiking trail with his wounded dog attached by leash to his hand.

Marin County sheriff's investigators on Tuesday evening released surveillance video that shows two of the three people they want to question in the shooting death of Steve Carter, 67.

Wonder if this was a robbery/attempted robbery gone wrong?

Carter and his wife, Lokita Carter, sold their home and business in Middletown (Lake County) several months ago and moved to Costa Rica, where they built their dream home, according to friends. But the couple recently returned to California so that Lokita Carter could be treated after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

There is a ******** page for Lokita. She was diagnosed in July with an extremely rare, aggressive and invasive form of breast cancer after almost 10 months of extensive medical testing. The couple had just returned to California and were staying with friends in West Marin, who were kind enough to share their home. I can't imagine what his wife must be going through at this time.

"It has been a very traumatic season for us with Lokita's cancer, then the Valley Fire that destroyed our beloved Harbin Hot Springs where we offered the majority of our workshops," Rose said. "This is the most devastating blow. We are heartbroken."

“I am beyond devastated to face this situation while already going through intensive breast cancer treatment. His senseless and shocking death is incomprehensible to all of us, and this time is the most difficult,” she wrote on the fundraiser page. “Please hold Steve and me close to your hearts and in your prayers. I am shattered, shocked, enraged and so so sad.”

Three drifters were arrested Wednesday in Oregon in the killing of a prominent yoga teacher who was fatally shot while walking his dog along a trail near Fairfax.

The suspects - two men and a woman - were arrested in Portland outside the St. Francis Dining Hall at 2:15 p.m. and were in possession of the victim's car, Marin County sheriff's Lt. Doug Pittman said.

Surveillance video of the three suspects outside a gas station in Point Reyes 30 minutes after the homicide occurred helped police track the steps and activities of the suspects.

When Marin County Sheriffs deputies saw the video, they knew they were onto something. "These are the same three subjects that were identified early on in our investigation by a number of people who came forward, almost immediately who reported persons of suspicion, people who are acting strangely, they seemed out of place," Marin County Sheriff's Office Lt. Doug Pittman said.

Marin County sheriff’s Lt. Doug Pittman said investigators had tracked the station wagon using GPS technology embedded in the car and alerted the Portland Police Bureau.

Two men and a woman — Morrison Haze Lampley, 23, Sean Michael Angold, 24, and Lila Scott Allgood, 18 — were arrested without incident at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday as they ate at a Portland restaurant, police said. Police did not know their home towns.

Yes, it is odd. How did the trio get there? Did two drive the stolen vw and the third stay in their car? Was it a botched kidnapping? Who knows?

They also are charged with the murder of a 23 year old woman Audrey Carey in Golden Gate Park last weekend. [emoji20] This is local to me and very big news in our area.

I was wondering about that. I thought the two murders might be connected, with the three needing a car to get out of the area. How awful for everyone. I read that Audrey, a French-Canadian had decided to travel to California/USA before touring Europe.

I wonder how they got across the GG Bridge to Marin County, or how they got to the open space preserve in Fairfield. I don't think anyone would pick up three hitchhikers.

Yes, her first solo trip. Her possessions were apparently found in Steve Carter's stolen car.

Carey was bludgeoned to death, Carter was shot. Did they not have a gun or chose not to use it in GG Park in fear someone would hear it?

I checked the California birth index and Lampley was born in San Francisco, nothing on the others.

ETA:

Her cause of death has been changed.

San Francisco police initially said Carey was found dead with blunt force trauma to her head in Golden Gate Park on Saturday morning. The medical examiner has since determined the blunt force trauma to be a gun shot wound, San Francisco Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

After the arrest, one patron approached Chapman and told her the suspects had been soliciting buyers for the stolen car.

“They didn’t seem particularly smart,” she said. “For them to think that anyone eating at a dining hall would have money to buy a car is not exactly realistic.”

In May, Lampley was charged in San Diego County with the unlawful selling or receiving of a stolen vehicle, a felony, and with stealing a dog, a misdemeanor.

He pleaded guilty to the felony charge and was sentenced to 97 days in jail, but was released because he had served that amount while the case was pending.

In July 2012, Lampley was arrested in Mountain View along with another man for allegedly carrying a concealed 5-inch knife. He pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor and was freed with a suspended sentence.

In June 2012, Lampley was convicted in Polk County after he was found possessing a controlled substance. Portland police arrested Lampley in December 2010 after finding him carrying a sword on the Eastbank Esplanade. Records show he had an earlier conviction in California for carrying a concealed dagger.

In court records, Lampley said he had one child who was in Oregon Department of Human Services custody. After his 2010 arrest, he said he was trying to get off the streets and was living with his father in Marion County.
