I know at least some had been (Santa Barbara was one place - I realized that's not near Castaic though- but that was due to a possible sighting or two) earlier on.

But I think that's a good point about the weather - both being cooler and the rain we're getting in CA - because even if they had been checked before, there will be people heading to shelters b/c of weather that hadn't been in them earlier.

So both for looking for Bryce himself or asking those in shelters if they had seen him again now would a good idea. Especially since there are other shelters that will just be opening b/c of it nearly being winter (or I'm assuming that's true further north and not just here in San Diego)

Our homeless shelter in Santa Clarita which is right by castaic opens on Monday night!

*Now, for the record, I am not bashing Bryce's family or Bryce. I also don't think anyone should have to fear giving their opinions and theories in any given case out of fear of political correctness, or being accused of 'bashing' the victim and/or family members and loved ones. This is a general statement, and not directed toward anyone in particular, but I have noticed that at times in some of the cases here, and no doubt elsewhere, which naturally have people with differing opinions, sometimes things are taken the wrong way and for the wrong reasons. And I wish I didn't feel the need to write this last paragraph, <Sigh>.*

I pray Bryce will be found soon, and his family have the answers they so desperately need.

Respectfully snipped by me.

Clicking the "Thanks" button just didn't seem like enough. Thank you for your well thought out post and thank you especially for the above portion. I couldn't agree more!

Sadly I have to say that I believe Bryce will be found around the lake!
I do not think he is out there wandering around with a head injury!
Or amnesia!
I do believe if he was ok he would have called someone.

Many times a missing person is found in the very area they went missing from but it takes time and its usually not by searchers but someone out walking their dog or taking a stroll.

If im correct I hope he is found soon so his parents can know what had happened to him and let him rest!

My prayers for Bryce!

I'm in Northern CA and we're not getting nearly as much rain but I was thinking the same thing - night time temps dropping rapidly, steady increases in rain. If he's still anywhere in the SoCal area I hope he's got very good shelter.

I think if Bryce is out there staying under the radar somewhere, he's almost certainly in a city somewhere. They are so much more anonymous than small places, and I don't imagine he would even attempt to live in the wilds. Much more likely to be working nights in a bar and couch surfing, I think?

I'm posting this here to help remind myself that it is always worth keeping an open mind. Thanks to the poster for collecting all those links.

Runaway cases -There is hope - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

Came to pop in here to say I am still following this thread, and still hoping for Bryce to be found very soon.

Also: zwiebel, thank you for posting this. These do give hope. I haven't read them all yet, but one, so far, stood out for me as I have had similar thoughts regarding Bryce's possible mindset. It's the John Humbard one. Gone for 23 years(!) before reuniting. A few quotes from an article I found about it:

""Never underestimate a young person's capacity to justify their actions and rationalize their decisions," Humbard — now 43 — said. "Events sweep you up. I got married. I had kids. There are a lot of 'whys' behind this.""

""I had this fear — one that probably doesn't make sense now — that back in California, I couldn't do the things I wanted to," he said."

His mother, theorizing why he stayed away:
"When John was growing up we had certain expectations," she said. "John was the kind of child who didn't like people planning his life. He went down to South America, and things didn't work out with Patricia. He didn't like failure, and I think he thought we'd look at him as a failure."

Above BBM

The entire post was great, however, the last part was fantastic and stated everything I've been thinking.

People want so desperately for Bryce to be found and home with his family and are trying to come up with every possible scenario. It may not be the most popular opinion and it's o.k. to not agree with others posts but we need to remain respectful of others and not make false accusations. Sadly it doesn't happen just here on WS it happens in everyday life.

The other day I posted my belief that Bryce, after crashing the vehicle, saw all the LE vehicles parked for their training exersize, and fled, possibly trying to swim to shore. ( Any shoreline away from LE activity.) The more I've thought of this, the more convinced I am that this is what happened. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that when it was learned LE was having a training exersize right there! RDW also posted similar, more articulate thoughts that I totally agree with. I don't think drugs had any part in what happened to Bryce at least at the time of the crash. I don't believe Bryce had a mental illness or pyschotic break either, or is wandering around in some fugue state, or hiding intentionally either.

Here are my reasons on what I think happened to Bryce and why.

Snipped for space!

No need to worry. As you are not accusing the family of anything or criticizing them, there is no bashing occurring at all.

You have some interesting theories. One question. What do you think Bryce doing for 10 hours in Buttonwillow before LE found him to do a welfare check?

(Caveat: His behavior before he set out on this trip, the alarm of his girlfriend about that behavior, the alarm of his friends and family during the trip as they kept calling him repeatedly, no trace of drugs or alcohol or being under the influence, during the 20 minute LE welfare check in Buttonwillow, adds to the 10 hours he spent apparently doing nothing in Buttonwillow, to make me suspect some sort of mental issue, rather than a 100% purposeful hiding out scenario).

One other thing. You mentioned "wooded areas". I wanted to again remind people of the area. This is a high desert area. The area directly around Castaic Lake is sparsely vegetated, high desert, not really "wooded". Or if there are wooded areas they are desert woods. There are some tall brushes that may be the height of small trees and some oaks in certain areas. Many of the trees existing around the lake, however, were actually planted and line roads. There is brush but it's not as brushy, for example, as the area where the hikers in Holy Jim canyon got lost, (read, got wasted and then caused a massive, unnecessary search as they ran around the brush hallucinating).

Here's video of a family hiking a trail around the lake (I started it near the relevant portion:

http://youtu.be/QghAF0oHHbk?t=1m41s

Here's an excellent, very detailed video of a bicycle ride all around the lake area, with clear explanations as to the where they are (the lagoon area and then over the dam and around the whole lake, into trails off road, above the lakes, etc.). It gives a great idea of the terrain around the lake, and a perfect understanding of what it looks like. But note this video was taken during the winter when it is much more green and less sparse due to greater vegetation growth from the rains. For example, the mass of green brushy grass seen in min. 5:01 would not be present in late August. It would be thinned out and brown:

(P.S., I LOVE the enthusiasm of the guy in the video!)

Just checking in to say that I'm still thinking about Bryce, his beautiful family, and his amazing girlfriend (kslyfox) daily. I truly want to believe he is out there alive, but I agree with some of the above posters...if he was somewhere and didn't have a head injury, I believe he would've called someone. I still have hope for him though. This case has affected me different than the many others I've followed so closely, I just have a strong feeling in my gut that he's still out there somewhere. Even if he's not, I truly hope they find him somewhere very, very soon. His family and girlfriend must be heartbroken with the holidays approaching so quickly.

kslyfox, if you're still reading on here...I'm so sorry you and Bryce's family are going through this right now. If I weren't all the way across the country in Indiana, I would be out daily searching for him. You guys are all in my thoughts, and I hope the holidays will allow you to spend some quality time with his and your families. I know having to go through Thanksgiving and (hopefully not!) Christmas without him is going to be beyond difficult...but with your graciousness, strength, and optimism, I know you'll make it through. And remember, wherever Bryce is, I'm sure he still loves you with all of his heart. Have a good holiday, sweetheart.

Come home, Bryce! :( :rose:

Thank you so much for your pics and video link gitana! Here I was earlier trying to explain how second-rate our lakes are in Southern California compared to the image you get when you think of a lake in, say, Northern California, while you did the research and found what could double as a police surveillance video. There are no 'woods' as people imagine that to be. You cannot just vanish into a treeline like Bigfoot when spotted.

There are large 'wooded' areas to the east and west that people get lost and die in (many articles in this string on that), but that is due more to the hills and canyons, people falling into them.

It got into the 40s last night for the third night in a row and when I got home (a ten-minute drive from the lake) there was that bitterness in the cold for the first time, the kind that drives you nuts and your human instincts drive you to get warm at any cost.

From what I've read about his background, I don't think Bryce could/would tolerate much of this and has found a way to live/survive with some level of comfort (though not nearly what he had before obviously). It keeps bringing me back to the homeless shelter/couch surfing scenario often talked about here.

To continue the my last post about the area, if Bryce had wandered away from the lake area and into the mountains that surround it, there is some more dense terrain. But those mountains, (not very high ones), if he went west and crossed the five, are really not wooded much at all. Very high desert, sparse and brown, with only some denser brush in washes and rivulets leading off the hillsides.

But if he walked more northeast, into the area that needs to be crossed to get to the Antelope Valley, then there are more trees and brush. Here are some examples of that area:

http://youtu.be/0O5Us3PIGDs
The above were also taken in the winter when it is as green and lush as it can get, which was not what it was like in late August.

Here's another, from October. It's from the Castaic area, I believe, all the way to Rock Inn, which is on the other side of the range:
Lake Hughes Road to the Rock Inn - YouTube

Here's one really showing what most of the area looks like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v95_kGE_nak

This is a dirtbike video from off-road trails high on the ridges of the range he could have entered going away from Castaic Lake toward the east/northeast, away from the 5 freeway. You get a real understanding of how desert this area is: 031311 Rowher - Sierra Pelona ridges - YouTube

Yes, there is brush and trees in the wild areas around the lake toward the east/northeast, especially in wash areas near water courses, but I just wanted people to be able to get a feel for the terrain and, although it is wilderness and is a type of woodland in areas, I want to make sure people aren't picturing this, when hearing the words "wooded" or "mountains"!:

Don't get me wrong. A body could definitely remain hidden in the region, especially if the person wandered far off road into the hills. But since no dogs tracked Bryce into such an area, and air searches did not find him, I remain hopeful that he's not lying out there.

""Never underestimate a young person's capacity to justify their actions and rationalize their decisions,"

Slowpoke, I'm pulling this from what you quoted in Zwiebel's post because if Bryce resurfaces years from now with a 'new life,' we could probably take the statement you bolded in red and make it the name of this entire string.

I always smile when I read posts that say things like 'Bryce will be home by Thanksgiving/Christmas because he'd much rather spend the holidays in a warm home surrounded by friends and family than with a bunch of strangers. I know I would.' Of course any websleuth would prefer that but it's not us we're talking about. We don't know what was/is going through Bryce's mind and rather than projecting, need to figure out what was/is motivating him. Thus the great work we see on here, people doing timelines trying to deduce future actions based on the string of events and behaviors leading up to the disappearance.

Thank you so much for your pics and video link gitana! Your welcome. I added some more as well.

It would take a few hours for Bryce to walk away from the sparse recreation area and get lost, I think. If he wasn't following a trail. But then I believe dogs would have tracked him.

If he's close by the lake, I think either dogs or searches would've found him. There have been several searches. And it doesn't appear that he would have a serious enough head injury that he would have just died of that, off in the brush, so IMO, the two scenarios that would fit Bryce's body being in the brush surrounding the area would be either he wandered far off and purposefully killed himself by some means, or he wandered far off due to disorientation from mania/mental issues that could have arisen organically, or induced by sleeplessness, or a head injury of some sort, and succumbed to heat and lack of water after days of wandering.

But again, dogs failed to track him anywhere but to, possibly, the lake shore and near the dam or away from the lake toward a parking lot near the 5 freeway, by a residential area and recreation area that many travelers stop at. Also, no ground searches or air searches found him. Given all of that, it seems less likely to me that he's in the area. Possible, yes, because dogs can make mistakes and disorientated and/or scared people can hide from searchers and helicopters, but IMO, given the terrain and the fact that the area has been heavily searched and tracked, not too likely.

I haven't really seen posts stating that Bryce would be home by a certain point because that's what the poster would do. (Maybe I've missed something). Instead, I've seen that those who know him or those who have analyzed the facts and the accounts of family and friends, believe Bryce would not purposefully stay hidden and cause anguish to his family.

And I don;t think that's an illogical deduction at all. Investigators absolutely look at the character of the person they are investigating, as detailed by friends, family and associates, to determine what their actions might be. They don't scoff at that info.

But if Bryce was suffering from disassociative fugue, or transient amnesia, or a different kind of break with reality, some sort of paranoia or psychosis, he may stay away because he doesn;t remember where to go, or he is hiding, because he's confused and scared, which would not be a purposeful attempt to stay hidden as there may be "intent" issues with people having neurological or mental problems.

I wonder if that means on the case as in full-scale investigation, or on the case as in regarding it as a voluntary missing case now and therefore they're no longing searching?

Whichever it is, if Bryce is out there or someone knows where he is, it's probably much more likely they'll make contact through a tipline with no connection to authorities, I'd have thought.

Pathetic, same thing SDLE thought about McStay family till they find them all murdered and buried years later.

This is my opinion of what I believe happened to Bryce which I know most of you are not going to agree with but that's Ok. I am married to a retired police officer and this is what we both believe.

Bryce was truly heading home to LN but pulled off to sleep somewhere just as he told his mom crashed his truck accidentally and completely panicked not knowing what to do also he had been up for 3 days prior from the adderall and was not in a clear state of mind prior to leaving per Kslyfoxy taking keys. That just escalated the panic and fear after crashing the truck not knowing what to do.

I think he seriously tried to get the heck out of there running around all over Castaic in a frenzy, he ended up on the road and he accepted a ride from a not nice person or persons who maybe offered him to go do drugs whatever maybe to calm him down. The stranger befriended him and Bryce fell prey as a victim to whoever picked him up and that person or persons intentional or not, hurt him and drove him far away from the area not by choice. IMO

This has crossed my mind several times as well..

Hi gitana1, I have no idea what Bryce was doing in Buttonwillow for those ten hours. I do wonder if Bryce's roomate S.D. may know what Bryce was doing there and why. From the texts Bryce sent to S.D., where he thank's S.D. for "saving my soul", that to me shows that S.D. was someone Bryce must have had complete trust in, enough trust to confide things that he may not have confided in anyone else. I think S.D. and others close to Bryce may have some idea about why Bryce was in Buttonwillow, and why he may have been there for so long. To me, there are always more than one reason for things, not specifically this case, but life in general. I do think someone(s) know the reason Bryce was there though, and I hope one day someone will come forth with this reason, as well as other questions regarding Bryce in the time before he left. I do not think he was hiding out there though. Maybe he was asked to stop there by someone close to him? For what, I don't know.

I use the term "wooded areas" more as a general description, as I have never been there, and in some photos posted of the area surrounding the lake, there does seem to be wooded areas, as opposed to heavily forested areas immediately surrounding the lake where Bryce crashed and disappeared.

I still think Bryce is in either the lake, perhaps snagged by something that prevents him from surfacing, or he is in the area around the lake. I have seen nothing to indicate Bryce is alive and in hiding. The only other theory I have, is Bryce somehow getting out of the area without being seen, and either getting a ride, or in some other way ending up meeting with foul play. Sadly, I do not think Bryce is alive. I still am standing by my theory, as this would explain what happened to Bryce and why, and there is no information or facts that have been made known to change my thoughts, opinions and theory on what happened to Bryce.

Thank's for the photos, what a beautiful area!
