Authorities believe a woman missing for 16 months is buried inside her husband's Lomita restaurant.

Officials with pickaxes, shovels and cadaver dogs hacked away at the floor and walls of the Thyme Contemporary Cafe, hoping to solve a 16-month-old mystery over the sudden disappearance of the cafe owner’s wife.

“At this point we believe she is buried beneath the restaurant,” said L.A. County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore. “We are excavating parts of the restaurant. We expect to be there for some time.”

Authorities dig up restaurant floor in search for owner's missing wife

March 1, 2011 | 2:41 pm

Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators and coroner's officials were digging up the floor of a Lomita restaurant on Tuesday, looking for the remain of the owner's wife, who went missing 16 months ago.

The search comes a day after the man was booked on suspicion of murder. David Viens, 47, was arrested at a hospital, where he was recovering from injuries after jumping off an 80-foot cliff last week.

I'm guessing the digging up of the restaurant floors is based on statements made by his girlfriend KG. I doubt he'd made the admission.

Creepy guy. If I remember, the restaurant was reopened following renovation 16 days before Dawn disappeared. The renovation might have been near completion, but not totally finished. If he was doing the renovation himself ... ?

The husband has confessed to Dawn Viens' murder.

The husband of a Lomita woman missing for 16 months has admitted to detectives that he killed her, investigators said today.

David Viens, 47, confessed to investigators that he killed his wife, Dawn Viens, 39, when they questioned him Tuesday at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance, sheriff's homicide Sgt. Richard Garcia said.

His girlfriend, Kathy Galvan, also implicated David Viens in the death of his wife shortly after he jumped from a Rancho Palos Verdes cliff last Wednesday, Garcia said.

Investigators believe Galvan had not been aware of the slaying until then.

I am shocked that he confessed. I hope she is found today.

This guy is a true coward. May he rot "you know where".

Investigators have wrapped up their search at a Southern California restaurant where authorities believed the body of a missing woman may have been buried. Assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said Wednesday that investigators did not find a body buried at the Thyme Contemporary Café in Lomita and there is no evidence of any human remains.

This is something I never thought I'd see. He just consistently behaved as if her disappearance was unimportant to him, so for him to confess ... Must be that's what he told KG as he headed to the cliff to jump--that Dawn was buried somewhere in the restaurant. I wonder why he lied and hope he'll now reveal the true place where she's buried.

Rest in peace Dawn. Justice is heading your way.

Not the update that I was expecting or hoping for. I hope they find her...

Has anyone found his date of birth on arrest records?

Where is he from originally? I read he had a restaurant in Florida too, where he had an arrest record.

Here's one other article, saying that he did not tell them where she is:

A sheriff’s department spokesman said the husband first confessed to his girlfriend that he killed his wife after a forensics team found blood in his former home.

However, he did not reveal to her or to authorities what he did with her remains.
