The fact they didn't know he was a cop is very odd. Why would the mother lie to her daughters?
Why not say he used to be a cop?
How much did she know?

Then she would have had to explain about the shoplifting conviction too.

Looks like he (suspect) bought the house he is (was) living in now was purchased on April 11, 1980 for $77,000. Was this a break in the crime spree? Perhaps this is the gap from March 13, 1980 to August 19, 1980.

Preoccupied with his new home? Don't know...1981 was a very similar pattern in Feb and July....then nothing until 1986 based on the information we now have pieced together.

Former Exeter officer identified as Golden State Killer, Visalia Ransacker suspect

DeAngelo was an Exeter police officer, according to an article in a August 22, 1973 issue of the Exeter Sun. He was 27 when he joined the force, and a Vietnam veteran, according to the article.

From April 1974 to December 1975, the Ransacker did indeed ransack and burglarize homes across Visalia before he escalated to an attempted kidnapping that ended in murder, and later shooting a Visalia police officer in December.

DeAngelo has not confessed to any crimes as the Golden State Killer, nor has he confessed to being the Visalia Ransacker, but some law enforcement professionals and armchair sleuths have long suspected links between the two. Authorities noted a link as far back as 1978, according to a UPI wire report in the Los Angeles Times.

chilling thank you. I will read that next. Anyone else think his wife helped him?

Not necessarily his wife and not necessarily even an accomplice. Could have been friends of victims who didn't want to be associated with the case for whatever reason.

But it's interesting

Maybe they found him. I'm curious as well.

Their reason given was that they wanted to redirected resources allocated to the D.B. Cooper case to other investigative priorities. If they don't want to search for D.B. Cooper's DNA in DNA databases, I would hope they would at least make his DNA samples available to private investigators, so they can do it.

This is a page from (Investigator) Larry Crompton's book "Sudden Terror"... about the bloodhound Pika:

https://books.google.com/books?id=F...mpton" AND "sudden terror" AND "Pita"&f=false

thank you! That's where I read about the illness or drug abuse addiction the offender may have had!

It also has the reference to the use and smell of baby lotion for those wanting the link. ( Presumably these are ok links, and are considered LE ? )

I dont want to encourage this line of discussion but it clearly says in the profile created about him that the weapons used were not left behind. He could have used a hammer, it is a blunt object as much as a log is.
Yep. And some had round marks like hmmmm from a hammer? Maybe.

I wonder if he slowed down after having kids – especially daughters – because maybe he found a hint of empathy within himself and perhaps possibly realized how such violence might impact his girls.

I’m not defending him, mind you. His only sympathy, really, imo, would be about how HE might feel if HIS property (children) were somehow damaged.

At the same time, I wonder if his wife and children experienced his brutality in any number of ways. I realize none are sleuthable here, and for good reason.

My hope is that time will out the truth.
Psychopaths or sociopaths are able to care about their children and do them no harm if they perceive them as an extension of themselves. Ariel Castro is one example.

Pardon me...circular contusions. Thank you for the quick correction. I'm taking in a lot of info.
"Two of the female victims had circular contusions. One was located on the shoulder of PATRICE HARRINGTON and the other was located on the buttocks of MANUELA WITTHUHN. The shoulder injury was described as a possible bite mark, the other as being consistent with a punch.

A hammer.

I'm not Clay but... I previously posted a link to "Sudden Terror" written by retired investigator Larry Crompton that mentions the bloodhound "PITA"... tracking to where the perp's car was parked.

https://books.google.com/books?id=F...mpton" AND "sudden terror" AND "Pita"&f=false

A little info regarding Crompton... but there's more out on the webz

Thanks, I've just read the post with the book excerpt re the bloodhounds now.

Interesting sign on the fence reads "Beware of Dog" at the front-right of his house and I don't think he had a dog at the time of his arrest. People do this as a visual deterrent in some cases. In hindsight of course, it would sure make sense in his psyche to post that sign for obvious known reasons to this suspect.

Okay, I see where I got 1973 - there's listed "possible crimes" that were in 1973, but it is not absolutely confirmed to be VR whereas the crimes in 1974 are.

Yes, so far only possible crimes in '73. Thanks to you and Rancher for the corrections. So, all the known crimes at this point attributed to JJD occurred during his marriage.
Is it known what line of work he did after being terminated from the APD until his job with the grocery chain beginning in 1991?
I attended Sacramento State U. at the same time JJD did.....different majors/bldgs, though. In '79 I briefly worked at at Tower Books with a young very sweet girl who I later learned had been murdered, bludgeoned, in her home in the latter part of '79. She lived in N/E. Sac. Her murder was unsolved as of '85 when I last checked. I can't remember her name, but I am trying to connect with my old manager to find an update.

I’m posting this link again; I think SecretAgentMan first shared it with me, so hat-tip to SAM!!

There are summaries of each attack here, and they’re gruesome. (Obviously, but I feel a warning is necessary anyway.)

ETA: the timelines here are very detailed, too.

I posted the link earlier as well and agree the timelines of the crimes are very well detailed and often therefore graphic.
