All I can find is Mercado and his jail cell mate both had medical emergencies that required hospitalization. "Deputies discovered accused triple murderer Carlo Gallopa Mercado, 31, and convicted killer Abel Angel Martinez, 52, ailing in their quarters at the San Diego Central Jail about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said."

Thank You colette! It takes a lot to satisfy my curiosity, so now I want to know how they both got sick. Drinking pruno or something in their cell? Or could it mean injured from fighting? At least, we finally found out where Mercado's been.

...was hospitalized along with a fellow jail inmate after both were found in medical distress in their shared downtown cell.

Well, now, we know who Mercado's cellie is and his background. Wonder if they get along and talk. Maybe he'll tell his cell mate if anyone else was involved in the murders.

I found this article from the San Diego Trib:

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2016/jul/27/murder-suspects-mercado-hospital/

'Attorney Dan Gilleon, who represents the parents of Belvedere and Flint in a lawsuit against the shopping mall where they were shot, said in a statement that the families have mixed feelings about Mercado’s attempted suicide.'

“You cannot blame them for having an initial 'good riddance' reaction,” Gilleon said. “But they also know that Mercado’s family is likewise suffering. My clients have suffered an indescribable horror that they would never wish on someone else's mother, father, sister or brother, no matter how evil the act that brought on this unimaginable tragedy.”

Thanks for the heads up !

Apparently I live in a mole hole as I had not heard a thing about this! It does sound like they both tried some sort of suicide attempt IMO. Perhaps another way to delay and further court trials? No idea. I did check the jail roster and it only shows Carlo as being in custody but no housing in the jail at this time. Perhaps still in the hospital?

Thanks for the updates all!

Good find, jggordo. Thanks.

I don't know what to make of it. Confusing statements, IMO, but I'm tired and this heat wave is getting to me. Is this a current suicide attempt or the one right after Mercado's arrest? Oddly, I read in a news article, maybe the one I posted above, that AAM the cell mate may have tried to commit suicide after his crime too; hence, why he was hospitalized during his arraignment. Maybe they both tried suicide?!?

Two Central Jail cellmates awaiting court proceedings in separate murder cases were hospitalized on Tuesday for undisclosed medical conditions, a sheriff’s official said Wednesday.
An attorney in a lawsuit against one of the men said Carlo Mercado, accused in a triple killing, attempted suicide.

Deputies found Mercado, 31, and Abel Angel Martinez, 52, in “medical distress” about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and they were taken to a hospital, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.

Gee, sometimes my curiosity exhausts me.

I know where I got that idea about AAM's possible previous suicide attempt. It said within the video that it was questionable why AAM had soft bandages on both arms and his neck was in a brace, hinting at a suicide attempt right after his crimes. He turned himself in four hours after his 2014 crimes, but then pleaded not guilty. Showed a picture of him within video. Did the two cell mates make a suicide pact? :dunno:

Martinez had bandages on both arms and was wearing a neck brace as he denied the charges in a hearing before Judge William McGrath.

NBC is reporting overdoses. I had pictured a fight
This dude better make it to trial.

Thanks. I love that you voiced what is felt by many of us-- lets get this dude to trial now. I'm losing patience with his relying on his (handy?) mental illness defense to keep delaying Justice for Ilona, Gianni, and Salvatore.

Wow! Both of them overdosed! Where'd they get that many meds? Saved them up or were they the drugs circulating within the jail? AAM is facing up to 82 yrs. for his crimes and CM is looking at either DP or Life. Was it a legitimate suicide attempt or just a drug party in their cell?

NBC 7's source close to the investigation believes the inmates overdosed.

IMO it was intentional Curious. AAM is already 52 and with a possible 82 year sentence in front of him, he may very well think it's time to end it now. As for Mercado, he already attempted suicide when first jailed with Tylenol. I have no words (within TOS) for how I feel about that . Drag his a$$ to court now and let the family feel some sort of justice has been served. :gaah:

On a side note there FB Justice page for the kids has been receiving more view and "like" activity in the past 2 weeks. Although we are not making any updates. https://www.facebook.com/justicegiannisalilona/

Thanks everyone for keeping me update! I've been pretty busy work wise and still haven't heard a thing through media. So it helps that you all are so awesome about keeping the info out there! THANK YOU!!!!

Carlo Mercado, 31, is suspected in the 2013 slayings of brothers Salvatore and Gianni Belvedere and Gianni’s fiancée, Ilona Flint.

A San Diego man suspected in the mysterious slayings of two brothers and a young woman – which began with a shooting on Christmas Eve 2013 in the parking lot of a mall – will stand trial next year, a judge ruled Tuesday.

The trial of Carlo Mercado, 31, is set to begin April 3, 2017.

I got antsy & contacted an nbc SD reporter for CM's status.

"Mercado has improved and returned to @SDSheriff custody, per spokeswoman"

Thanks Olivia522. They just need to keep an eye on CM until the trial starts. It always seemed there was more than just randomness going towards the motive. I also thought a possible accomplice could've been involved in these crimes. I do think, at least, the evidence will support CM's guilt, but the randomness will go towards what his attorney will claim is his mental illness. He's suffering depression now "based on his situation"...well, that's no surprise... being in jail for killing people will do that to you.

A judge ruled in July that Mercado would stand trial in the triple homicide case, with his trial set to begin on April 3, 2017.

Several months ago, Mercado’s defense attorney Gary Gibson said he was disappointed with the DA’s decision to pursue the death penalty in this case given Mercado’s history of mental illness. Gibson said his client is a “deeply damaged individual with significant mental health issues.” However, Erickson argued Mercado’s mental state is directly linked to the case, which includes depression “based on his situation.”

Gibson said the case will be difficult to prove at trial because prosecutors are struggling to pin down a motive.

One thing I have never understood (actually many) is why Gianni's pants and including his underwear was pulled down around his ankles.

Hopefully they will get justice in 2017. Unless something changes, the trial is set to begin April 3rd.
