A two-man dive team with the Sheriff's Office marine services unit recovered the body from the canal sometime after 1:30 p.m., Lee said."

Must be deeper than it looks.

I'm trying to remember where the other sightings and searches were, there was the latest one at that park somewhere but I don't have time to go back and refresh my memory. I was just checking on google maps to see if it would have been enroute to the Canal where the man's body was found . Cross country it's about 30 miles from Alameda, and of course further than that from the SF area where he was seen. Would / could he have walked that far, or maybe taken a bus? If it turns out to be him, which I very much hope not. :(

The last actual sighting was the Instagram photo at Lands End in SF. The search in Sebastopol was the last one we know of. It turned out that there is a local man who wears a hat similar to John's.

He could have retraced his route to Oakland and taken BART to Bay Point, which would have been the easiest. Or he could have taken public transportation across the Bay Bridge or gone to Marin and come across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Or gone further north to Novato and crossed on Hwy 37 which runs along the top of the Bay. All somewhat complicated scenarios. I doubt he would have walked that far but anything is possible.

The only thing that links this to John is his search for Martinez. And the reported fact that no one has been reported missing in that county makes John a possibility. I'm hoping it isn't John, but it is certainly worth checking on and ruling out. I noticed that someone posted about it on the FB page, so the family will be aware of it.

Did notice John's name was mentioned in the comments of the above sheriff FB page by a poster.

I'm glad to see from that comment that people are thinking of John. It wasn't there when I posted.

Again, I missed a couple of days here for JB. My heart skipped a couple of beats when I read about the body found...and not in a good way. Soon enough we will all know who this is. :candle:

There have not been recent missing persons reports in Contra Costa County that fit the description of the body, Lee said.

So does the description match anyone else who's been missing in nearby counties? With John's case being big news is it odd that nothing was mentioned about the possibility that it could be him?

I don't really think it's odd that they didn't publicly mention John as a possibility. I think that would need to be kept quiet until they had gathered more information. It's also possible that he is too short, different description, wrong race, etc so they could rule him out right away. It would be nice if they would eventually say that after a gazillion people email, call or comment that it could be John.

It did strike me as odd that they sounded as if it wouldn't occur to them to widen their search beyond the county. But that was probably just the way it was written. LE is smarter than that. Reporters? Not always. :)

In the meantime, authorities are working to determine the man's identity, but there has been a hang up: his hands have deteriorated so badly that it has proved difficult for doctors to lift good fingerprints from him.

So how long would someone have to be deceased/in water for their hands to deteriorate to this point?

Wish they'd release a description of the man....

I did a little digging to try to find an answer to your fingerprint question, but I came up empty. A lot depends on water temperature and depth, but I couldn't even find a ball park figure. I got a bit grossed out so I gave up. However, I would think it's possible that the time since 2/9 could be long enough. JMO

Yes, a description would be helpful...race, approximate height, age, clothing, etc.

I'm just hoping if they knew it wasn't John that they would confirm that. I sure do bet they have been getting a ton of messages about the possibility of it being him! But maybe they just don't know yet? That's my guess for the moment. Just so sad, whoever it may be....

Thank you for trying :) Much appreciated!

Hopefully they can match up dental records?

You're welcome. I was hoping to add to my knowledge of weird and strange things. :) Yes, if all else fails, dental records would be the way to go. Teeth last a LONG time.

Where's the link? I googled it and haven't come up with anything. TIA

Wondering, with someone with such wealth, how much would an insurance policy be for? Would one have to wait 7 yrs to file a person as deceased in order to collect it? Would suicide be covered in the policy?

I wonder what he was carrying in that packet in his hands. Was it cash? Was it documents and cash to disappear? Such a perplexing case!

I can't imagine owing someone $100,000 much less MILLIONS! That stress has to play a part in his disappearance. Is there anyone else that he could have escaped to live with considering others were sued as well? Would he have had the money to repay the amount owed? Didn't I read he had filed bankruptsy? If so, would that affect his wife and any real estate, or money they jointly have?

Whatever the case, John has family and friends that love him, despite all the legal issues, and want him found. I hope if he is able that he will see the pain being caused and reach out to let them know he is OK. It's hard for me to imagine someone at 73 deciding to start over, but it's hard for me to imagine the millions of dollars as well. If he has harmed himself, I hope his body can be found soon.

Sad case. But John obviously had some plan before his wife dropped him off that morning. He was on a mission. What that mission consisted of is the mystery.

Welcome. I see that you are very new to WS and you may not realize that you can't post a statement of fact without a link from the mainstream news source. I hope you will come back with the link because we have not been able to find this information. I've even scoured comments on news articles and Facebook and found nothing. Thanks so much.
