GUILTY CA - Leslie Perlov, 20, Palo Alto, 1973 & Janet Taylor, 21, Stanford, 1974, murdered, *Arrest 2018**

I wonder how many other murders will be solved with this method. Hopefully, many!

Edited to add - wonder if this guy ever killed anyone else. Seems like he might have known what he was doing (and might not have left DNA at other crime scenes/DNA may have been destroyed before testing was available, so the crimes couldn't be linked).

John Arthur Getreu, 74, of Hayward, was held without bail at the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office’s Main Jail on suspicion of killing Leslie Marie Perlov four decades ago, according to the Mercury News.

Getreu was arrested months after police submitted DNA samples from the Perlov case to Parabon NanoLabs, which uses DNA samples and genealogical mapping to produce a suspect profile and possible identity, the newspaper reported. The lab also collaborated with authorities to help identify a suspect in the Golden State Killer murder mystery earlier this year.

Looks like he had an arraignment hearing yesterday.

Sister of slain Stanford grad 'grateful' 1973 case solved

Getreu did not enter a plea Monday and is being held without bail in the Santa Clara County Main Jail, and is scheduled to return to court Dec. 17. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, but could be eligible for parole, however unlikely that might be, after seven years because he would be subject to 1973 sentencing guidelines.

Monday, Dec. 17th:
*Preliminary Hearing - CA – Leslie Marie Perlov (21) (last seen Feb. 13, 1973, Palo Alto; found Feb. 16, 1973) - *John Arthur Getreu (74/29 @ time of crime) arrested (11/20/18) & charged (11/21/18) with 1st degree murder during the commission of attempted rape. Held without bail.
DNA submitted to Parabon Nanolabs.
Getreu eluded detection for over four decades, even after he was convicted of raping an underage girl in Palo Alto in 1975, long before criminal DNA collection was instituted. In 1964, an 18-year-old Getreu was convicted of raping & killing a 16-year-old girl in Germany, where his father, a U.S. Army sergeant major, was stationed. The victim was the daughter of an Army chaplain also stationed there. He was tried as a juvenile & eventually returned to the United States after serving a short sentence.

11/26/18 Update: Getreu did not enter a plea & is being held without bail in the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Scheduled to return to court Dec. 17. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, but could be eligible for parole, however unlikely that might be, after seven years because he would be subject to 1973 sentencing guidelines.

A retired Stanford University worker has been charged with the murder of a 21-year-old student which took place 45 years ago. John Arthur Getreu, 74, was linked to the murder of Janet Ann Taylor, 21, after detectives investigating the cold case matched his DNA to the victim's clothes. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said this is the third murder Getreu has been linked to and they are continuing to search for more victims. Last November the former carpenter, from Hayward in Alameda County, was charged with the killing of 21-year-old Leslie Perlov in Palo Alto.
Suspected serial killer is charged with a second Stanford University cold case murder | Daily Mail Online

It was after dinner on March 24, 1974 when Janet Ann Taylor told her friends she needed to head home. The 21-year-old daughter of former Stanford football coach Chuck Taylor lived in a cabin in La Honda and her two Doberman pinschers couldn’t be cooped up much longer. It wouldn’t take her long to get back from her friends’ place on the Stanford campus, so she said she’d hitchhike. Her friends later told reporters they begged her not to. “But Janet got up and said she had to go home and let her dogs out,” one friend said. The next morning, a milk truck driver spotted a body in a ditch off Sand Hill Road. She was fully clothed except for her shoes and purse, which were missing. When police got to the scene, they discovered Taylor had been strangled, likely by her own grey turtleneck sweater...

Now, 45 years later, San Mateo County officials say their initial hunch has been confirmed...On Thursday, San Mateo County authorities announced they believe John Arthur Getreu, already in custody since November 2018 on suspicion of killing Perlov [another Stanford women killed the year before], has also been arrested in connection with Taylor’s murder. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reopened the cases in 2017 and submitted DNA evidence from the original crime scenes. Investigators say a match was found for Getreu, now 74, of Hayward.
Police think they've solved the long-cold murder of Stanford football coach's daughter

Suspected serial killer charged in 2nd Stanford cold case homicide from the ’70s

Authorities suspect that John Getreu may be responsible for more crimes. They are looking for similar cases in the San Francisco Bay area, Ohio and any other place where he may have lived.

Both Taylor and Petrov were strangled in killings that were “sexually motivated,” according to investigators, who plan to search for similar cases in the Bay Area and anywhere else Getreu has resided, including Ohio.

“Realistically, you look at a guy who has now been connected to three sexually motivated murders, now that covers [his] ages 18 to almost 30. Those are still prime years for someone who has such an impulse, a driven ability to commit these kind of violent crimes,” said Rick Jackson, a retired Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective who now serves as a cold case investigator with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Growing up in a military family, Getreu attended a private school in Germany, where he attacked and murdered a young female student in 1963, Jackson said. He was 18.

Getreu was convicted of murder, but because he was tried as a juvenile, he spent only a few years in prison before he was returned to the U.S., officials said.
