That canal is really big and fast. It has elevated concrete sides.

Before Xiong’s call to her boyfriend came to a chilling halt, she had been at home. An argument had began at the residence between Xiong and her mother because Xiong had come home late and had been drinking. She had previously been at the coast. Dyer said Xiong ran from the home after the argument and that her mother was not able to catch up to her.

“It is very possible, that after the argument that occurred at the residence, that (Xiong) ran from the location and may have run up to the McKinley and First area,” Dyer said. “There is gravel up and down that canal bank, which is described by her boyfriend.”

The attention is being placed on the canal for now, Dyer said. But it’s also possible that Xiong may not even be there. Dyer said the canal’s water level will likely need to be lowered so a dive team can search it. The circumstances of Xiong’s disappearance are suspicious, according to Dyer. He said he is not sure if the people who used Xiong’s credit card know about her disappearance or if they simply found her belongings.

[h=1]Fresno father's emotional plea to his daughter after she goes missing[/h]
"I can't eat, I can't sleep, and I not go to work. I don't know what to do, please come home."

Fresno detectives suspect foul play in Lucy's disappearance because of a phone call she made to her boyfriend. Police said she used an expletive and screamed right before the phone disconnected.

"I felt really uneasy, this isn't right, this isn't something she would do," said Andy Xiong, Lucy's brother.

Police believe Lucy may have been kidnapped and hope the individuals caught using her credit and debit cards may have answers. But they are also following up on a tip from neighbors who reported they saw a woman drowning.

I feel absolutely terrible for her family. I hope they have answers and soon.

Finding nothing new... Why does it feel like we have a lot of information but this case is getting very little media attention? :scared:

This case was discussed on Primetime Justice on HLN tonight. The transcript should be available later.

I feel equally torn between someone robbing her and pushing her into the canal or that she lost her footing and slipped in. Glad they're doing this and hope, if she's to be found down there, that it's quick answers for her poor family.

Wonder if they canceled her cards or let them go hoping for continued use. I imagine word getting out would make them go dark anyway.

Still confounds me how some cases get massive media attention and others go by unnoticed. Makes me sad...

that's not the finest area. also, there has been a history of trafficking young Asian women from Fresno.

I was going to ask how the area was...I'm from Cali but don't know Fresno well. This sounds pretty awful. What terrible timing and horrible luck for this poor girl.

I really think that 911 call is the key to all this. It is really suspicious. How close are houses to this canal? Could someone really hear someone drowning from their house? Also I feel if she had fallen in then her purse would've also fallen in, leading to her debit cards not being left on sidewalk for someone to just pick up. I am really thinking abduction.

Agree 100000% - the 911 call about the drowning doesn't make much sense. They haven't reported who it was that called to report the drowning, right? Apparently a neighbor mentioned hearing a "disturbance" at around 1am but that seems to be different from the 911 call. They also made several references to a body in the Q&A regarding the call about the drowning so I'm curious, did someone say they HEARD a person possibly drowning, say they saw someone in the process of drowning, or that they saw someone who appeared deceased in the water? And how would you be able to know someone was drowning vs other scenarios, unless you actually SAW the person drowning?? And if you saw them and communicated this and they weren't found, I have a hard time believing the police would simply clear the call. None of it makes much sense and I hope that they know who reported the drowning. If not I would be quite suspicious. In fact I'm suspicious regardless.

Also very interesting that her scent wasn't picked up....is anyone familiar with that area? Is it big enough to drive a car onto? Can you see it from the road? Is it known for a homeless population/problem? It just seems strange that she would get snatched so quickly. Trying to figure out who saw her and how they were able to act so quickly. Concerning that multiple people are using her card.

Unless this is a terrible case of her tripping and falling into the canal...but I think it's doubtful. The call with the boyfriend seems to indicate something more sinister. I wonder if she knew how to swim...how powerful is the canal? A lot of questions.

Agree 100000% - how could someone have heard a person drowning at 1am (ish) and not heard her screaming at just after midnight?? This makes zero sense. Furthermore, how would you be able to know someone was drowning vs other scenarios, unless you actually SAW the person drowning?? And if you saw them and they weren't found I have a hard time believing the police would simply clear the call. I would imagine they confirmed it was in fact a neighbor that called?? If not I would be quite suspicious. In fact I'm suspicious regardless.

You worded my thoughts so much better than I did! I agree with all of this 100%!

Awe thanks I was just agreeing with all you said!! It's the strangest case with a lot of seemingly coincidental (or not so) incidents...no way that I spin it though does it end well, sadly. My money would be on her ending up in the canal by either an accident or foul play. I wonder who started fundraisers that are not legit, and what sorts of SM rumors the LE were referencing...

There were two separate neighbor reports. One was a neighbor who HEARD a commotion but didn't report it to police until after they saw the news about Lucy being missing. The other report (different person) is from a 911 call about a woman possibly drowning in the canal. I'm not sure if they said that the caller SAW the woman or not but that was my impression from watching the press conference. If this case had more coverage, maybe a reporter would actually get the 911 call for us to hear what was reported.

Thank you thank you! I really wish this case was getting more coverage...I'm sort of shocked and flabbergasted at the moment at how some cases which don't even seem to be criminal are currently getting insane and international coverage while ones like this slip into the darkness. Not that any person is more deserving of coverage than another...but it really seems to come down to who you know in this case and that seems terribly unfair. I hope for her and her family's sake someone picks it up.

The canal is very powerful and deep. I went to high school right by that canal and we always steered clear of it. The neighborhood wasn't the best in the 80s and is worse now. The call about the drowning has me concerned. It was dark out and if she was walking on the side of the canal she could have slipped. It flows towards the west and runs under Highway 41 where it is underground for a bit before opening up again. She could be miles downstream. Many people who drown in the canals in the Central Valley are not found for several days. I hope she's alive but that call wasn't normal. People don't call saying someone is drowning in the canal unless they think it is so.

The green circle is more or less the start of where they think she may have gone in and the two red ones are parts of the canal. Sorry for my clumsy markup.

Imho...it seems sadly she may have been confronted, robbed and pushed in the canal. :( moo

I think so too. They might have grabbed her purse and when she tried to hold on to it pushed her and she fell. What a frightening scenario! I hope they find the guys who used her cards.

[h=1]Fresno Irrigation District working on lowering water level of canal to help with search efforts for Lucy Xiong[/h]
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --

The family of 20-year-old Lucy Xiong is anxiously waiting to hear if she is alive somewhere after rescue crews searched canals for her Tuesday afternoon with specialized equipment-- but they haven't found anything yet.

"So we were using the camera underwater, we were sticking the lens underwater and gathering a picture of that area on our camera to see if we had a potential victim," said Mark Woolley, Captain Fresno Fire.

The Fresno Irrigation District is doing something they said they have not done in about seven or eight years to help with search efforts for Xiong. A two day process to cut water levels in half so rescue teams can search a three mile stretch of canal Thursday morning.

"We're not taking the water entirely out of the canal, but we're taking it down to half which will allow everyone to look in the canal. We'll be able to see the bottom of the canal at that point," said Gary Serrato, General Manager Fresno Irrigation District.
