You've just singled out what it takes most parents years to see, imo. Balance is the objective. You'll
be a fabulous parent. :-)

thank you so much for that !! :) I know I don't want to go off topic because little maddy is the focus but parenting isnt easy!

My 8 year old just finished the 2nd grade. She's going to enter 3rd grade in the fall. Has it been released that Little Maddy was a 3rd grader? Not that it really matters, I guess. She'll never get to go back to school again.

She was going into 4th grade.

More challenging, yes. And who provides the cell phone, the tablet, and the laptop to teens? Who pays for the cell phone plan, the Internet plan, the Netflix and streaming entertainment and cable TV subscriptions? Parents, the vast majority of the time.

Except even when the parents do not supply these things the kids just use their friends phone . my step daughter used to do it all the time.

BBM. They certainly have. But they haven't had the instant access to thousands of images for a long, long time. It's so easy to go down a *advertiser censored* rabbit hole now. Young boys (even before teen years) have instant access to child *advertiser censored*, violent *advertiser censored*, etc. Right at their fingertips, anytime they have access to the internet, or anytime their friends have access. This is certainly new to history. I truly believe that we have a huge amount of boys (and girls) who are growing up with ready access to dark and violent sexual content, like never before.

YES. well said.

this research says they think the sudden accessibility of violent *advertiser censored* has increased the number of gang rapes at teen parties.

I remember Ralph Nader talking about this, I don't even know how many years ago, and one of his comments was when it's bad or too much you can simply turn off the TV.

I think it's a really good conversation to have. I will be a first time parent of a tiny baby girl and I don't want to be one of those "overly" protective parents but at the same time, being a best friend doesn't work either. I think creating that balance is probably the hardest thing?

RBBM

Aww, so sweet! Such a happy time!

Conversation re sexuality, as well as how to protect themselves from sexual abuse (it is not necessarily simply "stranger" danger--that's easy imo), etc has to begin early. Communication between parent or parents & child need to begin early on and then adjusted and parent should continue to provide more info, continue to engage in conversation as child develops.

Because, depending upon the individual, many adolescent and young teens will shut down or tune out (all are different) and by then, it often can be too late if nothing but the most basic info has been covered, provided or discussed

Believe it or not there are actually parents who opt for no TV at all in their homes. They want their kids to read, to listen to music (of their choosing), to play outside and get tired from running around and being a kid, to have the values from the parents instead of mass media. It's a choice.

As for this particular 15 yr old kid, we don't have information about him and what home life was like or his mental state or any of those things that will surely be looked at in depth by the authorities and various experts.

Why doesn't Santa Cruz clean up, arrest the heroin highway behind this Tannery Community? It sounds like it is well known to people familiar with the area. Just asking since I am not from CA.

With this type of people living behind you, it doesn't sound safe for any age to be out alone. JMO.

The man who asked not to be identified described the teenage suspect as “the nicest kid you can imagine.”

He said he was a yo-yo expert, who was always around the studios helping out, training as he wanted to be a professional. He took a ceramics class at Santa Cruz High.

“He was usually alone or with an adult. I never saw him with other kids,” the source said.

Arresting addicts has not made a dent in any drug problems anywhere that I know of. I wish it was that easy.

unfortunately, the Chism case is fairly local to me. I'm on the NH/MA border
- That he killed her in the shed, probably with a sexual motive, probably by strangulation blefuscu)

Reminds me of another 14 year old: I am sure many WS members remember Philip Chism, 14, who sexually assaulted and murdered his teacher, Colleen Ritzer, 24. :( :( :(

It's a long time problem there, going back to the 1970s, maybe late 60s, the hippie days., only they didn't leave or change like SF. My father used to say Santa Cruz was a sleepy town full of retired conservatives and then they built the UC campus (opened in 1965) and everything changed. It's one of the most liberal towns around, wants to be considered tolerant, but anti-growth.

But “Keep Santa Cruz Safe and Clean” began appearing on bumpers in recent years as the city was rattled by acts of violence, its streets and parks seemingly overwhelmed by homelessness and drugs. To hear the supporters of the new slogan, Santa Cruz’s famous tolerance was guilty of enabling.

Yes, of course I know. There are families who don't have TVs, and plenty of families make the choice to have no internet in their homes either. We never had cable beyond the basic four or five channels, and the computer was in the living room. My daughter could only be on it while we were in the room with her and her time was restricted.

(Just getting in here, checking the latest msm and bringing it fwd, then going back to read.)

Cops: Neighbor "lured" slain Calif. girl to his apartment
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/cops-ne...rnia-girl-madyson-middleton-to-his-apartment/

"SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -An eight-year-old northern California girl was killed by a teen neighbor after the suspect lured her into his apartment, police said Tuesday.

Santa Cruz police chief Kevin Vogel said Madyson Middleton went willingly to the fifteen-year-old boy's apartment Sunday evening in the complex where they both lived. Vogel confirmed that a body found in a recycling bin at the complex Monday following a massive search is that of the missing girl.

Police believe the boy, who she knew as an acquaintance, killed her while they were alone in the apartment and then tried to conceal her body in the bin.

"She went there of her own volition as far as we can tell - she knew him. She was 8 years old. I think she had a reasonable amount of trust in him," Vogel said. "We don't believe she was taken there against her will.""

"The search came to a tragic end Monday evening when the girl's body was found in the recycle bin during a second and "more thorough" search of the apartment complex, Vogel said.

Vogel said the teen boy was taken into custody "almost immediately" because he was in the same area where the girl's body was found, possibly watching teams search. The teen's apartment is upstairs from the bin where the girl's body was found, Vogel said, and investigators believe the body was carried to the bin."

I don't think there is a lonelier or more angst-ridden age than a 14 or 15 year old. Parents would do well from an early age to provide their children with social activities-music, sports, scouts, church, science or reading groups etc. Most 14 year olds start hating their parents lol. And they are bored and full of animosity. I am no social worker but something has to be in place by the time they turn 13/14/ Just my own opinion.

Like a lot of cities in CA, Santa Cruz has a lot of transient homeless. I have seen arrest while there, but more just come.

"The boy was questioned extensively and later arrested on suspicion of homicide.

Vogel said investigators have evidence to tie the teen to the murder, but they did not disclose what the evidence was. They believe he acted alone. They say they believe the child was killed shortly before police received a call reporting her missing just after 6 p.m. Sunday, and was placed in the recycle bin shortly thereafter."

One factor I see that is so different in today's world is that usually both parents work. Normally this is out of necessity due to the high cost of living. Back in the day, mothers were home when the kiddos came home from school so not only was there parental supervision, there was communication between parent and child for several hours after school before dad came home.

The family sat down to dinner together and there again was a chance for parents to find out what was going on in their children's life. Yes, the children had after school activities several days a week, however, that only enhanced their life.

Sounds dream like compared to today's hectic world, right?

Life goes on, modern inventions appear, we want more at an earlier age, and somewhere in there our children are suffering without too many realizing it. When or where will it stop?
