Neal my son, I Search For You
I searched for you in the unfamiliar tall pines and darkly forested mountainsides,
I searched for you by the cold, deep lakes and rocky streams,
I searched for you in the distant clouds and in the endless night sky,
I cried out to the Universe for you.
I searched for you in my photos.
I searched for you in the stories your friends sent me
I searched for you in the places your father and I took you when you were small,
I searched where you loved best, this island,
I searched for you at your favorite cove where we watched the dolphins play,
I searched for you in our secret swimming place and on the windswept beach.
I searched for you in the setting sun on the Laguna Madre
I searched for you as I strummed your guitar, feeling where your fingers touched.
I searched for you as I held your favorite shirt to my face and breathed you
I searched for you in the few things that were dear to you
And I began to find you.
I found you in what you loved more than anything in this world, I found you in what you saved, the letters I sent you, the pictures of your family you always kept with you, no matter where you went, and I found you in this poem from school you wrote at aged 10.
Red, satisfied, happy and average
Son of Gayle and Clifton King
Lover of animals, family and friends
Who feels pain when he gets punched by a friend, when he gets hit in the head by a golf club, when a
needle is going through his skin to stitch it up,
Who feels joy when a friend makes him laugh, when he has a birthday party and everyone yells “Happy
Birthday”, and when Christmas comes around and everyone is happy no matter how bad their day
was,
Who needs food, shelter, and water,
Who fears death, pain, and sickness,
Who gives presents to my family on Christmas, on their birthdays, and on Mother’s and Father’s day.
Who would like to see laughter when he makes a joke, sadness when someone gets hurt, and the world to be a better place,
