DNA evidence focus of 'NorCal Rapist' trial on second day

October 20, 2020
The second day of the “NorCal Rapist” trial ended Tuesday at Sacramento County Superior Court.

A second rape survivor began to testify Tuesday. Identified as N. Doe, she was attacked inside her Rohnert Park condo in 1991.

N. Doe was 21 years old at the time and had put up an ad in the newspaper looking for a roommate. She testified she was asleep on her couch when a masked man broke in, held her at gunpoint, bound her hands and feet, duct taped her mouth and put a pillowcase over her head.

The judge then broke for the day and N. Doe’s testimony will continue Wednesday.

Waller did not look up to acknowledge N. Doe’s testimony. All nine survivors will have an opportunity to testify in a trial scheduled to last until December.

The majority of the day was focused on DNA evidence used to solve the elusive cold case dating back nearly 30 years, specifically the investigation of 1992 and 1996 rape cases in Vallejo and Martinez, respectively.

The defense didn’t necessarily disagree with the evidence, however, and attempted to poke holes to lessen confidence in the DNA evidence connecting Waller to the crimes.

She made certain to stare Waller down during more than three hours of testimony that began Tuesday afternoon & continued until noon Wednesday, and said he never looked at her once. Who was questioned by Sacramento Deputy District Attorney Chris Ore. Trial continues on 10/22/20. The trial, which is expected to last for weeks, continues Thursday with testimony from the victim of a Halloween 1996 attack in Martinez.

In a dramatic confrontation Tuesday during the Nor Cal Rapist trial in Sacramento, one of suspect Roy Waller’s alleged victims identified him in court as the man who attacked her 23 years ago, prompting Waller’s defense attorney to accuse her of lying on the stand.

The accusation came during the second day of testimony from the woman, who was a 21-year-old Chico State psychology student who was attacked July 18, 1997, in her apartment by a man who surprised her while she was asleep.

The Chico victim followed testimony from three other women — victims from Rohnert Park, Vallejo and Martinez — and is expected to be followed by testimony from a 1997 Davis rape victim.

Some of the women have described the sheer terror of waking up to find a masked man with a gun who spent hours in their homes alternately raping them and wandering about their residences as they were tied up.

But some have described fighting back violently, including the Vallejo victim who grabbed the attacker’s knife, broke off the tip and used it to stab at his forehead.

I see that there are 2 women from Yolo County where Davis is (used to live there in the 60s!) that were raped in 1997.
