I take this as unarmed. If a knife was used they would say "only firearm"

Does anyone really think if the shooter was anyone but a fellow cop, that he would be free to go about his business, and his identity kept secret? A family that is hurting is not an unbiased opinion. They usually post a pic that is not a correct representation of the subject.

Very true, photos can be selected and descriptions of a "gentle giant" can be spun.

It is also worth noting, however, that the officer apparently attempted to use lethal force against three individuals- including an upper middle aged woman. That can potentially make for a steeper hill to climb justification wise. The "climb" is not impossible- but could well be very steep.

I'm going to take the wait and see approach on this. Too many times recently the first impression of a situation involving LE is wrong. And it turns out LE did in fact handle a situation correctly. A family that is hurting is not an unbiased opinion. They usually post a pic that is not a correct representation of the subject. We see that all the time in missing persons cases. The picture initially released looks nothing like the person the day they went missing.

In any case, let the cctv video and witnesses tell the story.

I'm just saying that a single pic is not representative of who a person is. And mentally disabled or mentally ill people can be deadly violent. There are witnesses who have said that this guy had a mohawk. That right There does not match the picture we have been shown. Not that there is anything wrong with sporting a mohawk. We don't even know what Mr. French's issues are. All we have is what a family member is saying. A family member who admits he doesn't know himself.

I think a cctv video will remove doubt. No matter which way it goes.

well the family recovering in the hospital no longer has a child because an off duty office likely decided to play cowboy.

And LE has a history of covering up for their officers. It just happened in Pheonix where police threatened to murder 2 parents in front of their children then lied in the report.
I hope justice is served.

Six shots does seem to be excessive.

I wonder if French grabbed at the officers arm causing shots to go awry.

I found this quote interesting.

Authorities did not respond to requests for more information about what led to the attack and whether anyone but the officer had a weapon.

I sure would like the answer to those requests. Without knowing what led to the alleged attack or if French was armed with a deadly weapon it's hard for me to call this case one way or another. JMO

I'm sure that LE is taking precautions to guaranty the safety of the officer and his family from any vigilante attacks before releasing his name. I hope it happens soon and we find out more about what happened.

While it's not unusual for police to delay releasing information, such as an officer's name, after a shooting for safety reasons, Giacalone said it's important to get details out as quickly as possible.

California doesn't have stand your ground law. Which means if officer could safely retreat he should have done so. Now, I don't know if could or couldn't, but clearly shooting in a crowded store is extremely dangerous to bystanders. Also, it hasn't been reported that parents of the guy shot dead did anything to attack the officer, yet the officer shot them too. I bet if it were a regular citizen his behind would be sitting in jail right now.
