That was absolutely horrifying to watch. There really needs to be an evaluation of the hiring and training process regarding that incident.
and what blew my mind most was how different the police report of the incident was. If there was no footage the police would have got away with that abuse.

We need to see the footage here. I cant accept (or even believe) what they are reporting.

Video will tell some of the story. I have a difficult time believing the officer was unconscious. How do you go from being unconscious to drawing your gun and shooting 3 people in the middle of Costco in an instant?

Has anyone else in the store that day reported violent behavior by the victim?
You do that by not being trained that your gun is the absolute last resort.

I agree, and I do wonder if the parents tried to defend their grown son and that is how they ended up getting shot.

I can see how the officer's attorney's statement could be very accurate. It is possible that he was hit from behind while holding his baby son, knocked to the ground, momentarily either loses consciousness or is just completely in shock, looks up and some big guy is coming toward him, is afraid for himself and his son, and fires his weapon. 7 shots is excessive imo, but in the moment, who knows what was going through his mind. I do know that when your child is threatened you are very much in flight or fight mode, especially if you have any sort of PTSD (not saying that is the case here, but a possibility). Maybe French's parents either stepped in front of him or moved toward the officer in defense of their son.
From your post: 7 shots is excessive, though ...

That’s the biggest problem that is happening. These cops are immediately going to the gun and then just keep shooting. The whole point is that, crazy situation or not, cops are supposed to have been trained so they don’t react before they think.

Is there even tape though? With crowds and being in the freezer section the video that is available may not clearly show what happened.

I dont buy the cops story at all. Makes no sense. And if it's true, he was Extremely reckless to pop up and start shooting 6-7 shots.
Remember there was no injuries on his or the childs side.

I want to see the tape. LE lies all the time. Look at what the officers in Pheonix who claimed to be scared for their life of the young couple, but the tapes shown they attacked the couple and threatened to kill them and their children.

I thought the child and his father were checked out at the hospital? We don't know what the diagnosis was.

I should be a federal law that any and all footage held by the police is released immediately (if no charges are filed) or after the trial, if charges are filed.

O/T but important in life.

@jjenny - SBM: Perhaps this is a learning moment for others too. Non-verbal people post on social media. People who have never spoken a word in their lives can and do post on social media. One doesn't need verbal skills to be able to form and share thoughts and sentences. Some of those folks might be among us. Some of those among us might have non-verbal children, SOs, family members, or friends, and inferring they can't post on social media is just incorrect. That is sometimes the only communication they have. That is what I meant about having compassion. We never know what battles (or celebrations) everyone is facing in a community like this.

I’m a little confused. I wondered earlier if use of social media involved nonverbal things like posting photographs on Instagram. But people who ‘form and share sentences’ on social media are using verbal communication. Words make sentences. You can’t have sentences without words. Verbal communication is the use of words. (My opinion, but also the opinion of dictionaries.)

Is it possible that you’re referring to lack of oral communication? Not speaking, for whatever reason?

the generally accepted nomenclature to which we are both referring is "non verbal". But, yes, I give you a big yes for semantics. Non oral. Does anyone use that phrase? I honestly have never heard it used in, well, any sense.

,

non-verbal is non "speaking" as you refer to it. It is not necessarily a diagnosis but medical terminology. Some people are even physically able to speak but do not and are considered nonverbal. I am sorry I am still too new and not tech savvy enough to have figured out how to add a link. Sorry!
HTH.

I wouldnt be suprised if Non-verbal French accidentally bumped him, the cop got mad, likely wanted to flex power and started to argue and got upset when French did reply and escalated from there.

Thats my theory, but the tapes should show the truth

I'd like to know what his disability is. Could he have something that caused him to meltdown in public? And that was considered a threat to someone armed who was there with his own family?

It's sad but people with cognitive, neurological or mental health issues are at higher risk of being shot by police for things that others would not be shot for. Especially if they're men and large.
