OMG What a muddle. There is something strange going on in the state of California. The Strehle dad Arthur A. has a full obit in 1963 in Azuza, yet he appears to be alive and well in Santa Barbara, 1968. Is there a scam going on? Because it is the third or forth time I've come across this sort of thing - the Bandringa case has a similar anomaly...

AND one of the Zodiac vics.
Arthur A.s obit, 1963 Azuza, makes no mention of a son Richard or a daughter Susan. There is a son with a totally different name, and a daughter with a totally different name, and a stepdaughter. Judging by the other relations he doesn't appear to be directly related to any Richard E Strehle. Is this a strange kind of witness protection that I haven't come across? The names are just so unusual, there just can't be two Arthur Alois. married to an Esther Ruth, can there?

Right, sorted one problem. The guy in Santa Barbara is Arthur's dad. So Arthur was dead in 1968, and I presume the Ruth is his widowed daughter-in-law. But the obit doesn't mention a Richard or a Susan, so problem only half solved

I don't see why not

Ran out of steam @ 2 am British Summer Time.
Here's the obit. Took me a while to ensure all mentioned were deceased.

PS @ least one mentioned in the obit went to La Sierra Academy, Riverside, as did Cecelia Shepard, the Berryessa victim of the Zodiac

What year?
Well, I wasted a morning looking through un-indexed yearbooks, so it's one of the missing years. It would be. However, Cecelia's there in 1967, which is available.
I wonder if Richard went there also. I have a theory about predators / stalkers and yearbook photographs.

This is fascinating, FOXINBOX. I hope you share your theory soon.
Thank you kindly, I will be doing it, properly like, photos, connections etc. but in 36 hours, all hell is going to break lose on the Lamplugh thread [UK cause celebre - glamorous estate agent [realtor] who vanished 35 years ago] An eagerly awaited book is being published, and Fox has shot her mouth off on that thread as well  Gettin' ready to defend myself from the fallout...

Gottim!

Oceanside High 1964.

The Strehles seem to be a very complicated family. Literally all over the place. Richard's sister definitely went to San Gabriel High, and Richard is a no show @ San Gabriel. I looked 1963 thru 66. They contained some really grim women's hairdos. Lots of backcombing and lacquer going on...but no Richard, so even though Oceanside is 90 odd miles off, it seems OK. The address I have for him in Oceanside is a cheap apartment block, which hints @ a temporary arrangement.

I am having a horrible time unravelling the Strehle family. I'm confident his mother is Marie Kelly Bell, but can find no trace of her Strehle marriage other than Richard was born Richard Strehle, and not Richard Kelly i.e his name had Marie been an unwed mother.
However, looking back @ Morf13's copy of Marie's Court Petition, I see the signature under the date is also a Kelly.
I'm too exhausted to do a search...o_O...maybe later...

OK, I'm stoopid & couldn't resist one last search on Marie, who has a total of five surnames on her social security, Strehle being second, and valid in 1951, by '52 it seems she's no longer a Strehle. If all this seem irrelevant, I like to know how the missing got to the place where they disappeared, because it give clues to motivation etc. and Richard has proved quite a problem.
