He also aided and abetted the fraud by picking her up under false pretenses, housing her for multiple days, driving her back into her area, helping her obtain and deploy the shackles, dropping her off on the highway. Suppose she was killed on the highway by a motor vehicle, wouldn't he have been responsible? You don't just drop somebody off on a highway shackled up (even though it was a lame type of shackling). That's gotta be some type of crime.

I mean, it's illegal, I think, to abandon your dog on the highway....

Note on edit: Just imagine if an old boyfriend or girlfriend from years ago asked you to do those things. Just imagine...
Any reasonable person would be like, "You're cray cray. Get the heck out of my life..." Instead, this guy helped produce the entire charade.
i have a feeling that their story of what happened during her time there is inaccurate.

A few photos of Sherri's injuries are posted in this article:

“The reason you lost so much weight is because you stopped eating,” the detective said. “The reason you got a rash on your arm is you cleaned his house. The reason for the brand is he went to the store and bought the tools and branded you. The reason why your nose is broke is because of a hockey stick. I know all of those things, and I know there was no sex. I know all of that because he passed a polygraph test that said, it's not an abduction. She asked me to come get her. I rented a car. He passed the polygraph test Sherri. If that's not what happened what did happen Sherri?”

"There's no way! there's no way,” Papini says.

Papini never admits her lies, instead pretending she thinks detectives are merely informing her that Reyes was her abductor.

So ol' Sherri was poised to lie and say the boyfriend abducted her or at least to let LE think he did IMO.

In the article is also the full statement from Sherri's sister. Heartbreaking that she was used by Sherri.

The statement from her sister is so heartbreaking. I am very impressed with the level of honesty her sister expressed - especially that Sherri still isn't sorry for what she did.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the sentencing on this case. She definitely deserves being made an example of.

Perhaps @gitana1 can weigh in on this, but I am struggling to see what Reyes should be charged with.

Technically, did he commit any actual crimes?

He didn't apparently lie to the police once they finally contacted him. He never actually kidnapped her, and only hurt her at her own request. It was a voluntary missing situation. I doubt they could prove he knew she would later plan to defraud victim's compensation and disability/social security. I think his story that he believed he was aiding an abuse victim who manipulated him rings true and it's likely a jury would buy it, too.

Was he legally obliged to report her situation and expose it as a hoax? Probably not. Morally, maybe.

In the end, it was Sherri, herself, who cost the taxpayers due to an elaborate kidnapping hoax, who harmed the local community with her false allegations about Hispanics being her abductors, who lied to the feds, and who defrauded the government financially when she maintained that hoax for six years.

It appears he didn’t commit any crime. He’s not facing anything. Initially I thought he may have had more involvement. But it appears he was just manipulated by her to do her bidding, with no intent to defraud the government or anyone else.

I would like to hope that this is the beginning of holding people accountable for reporting false crimes. However, Jussie Smollett was found guilty of reporting a false crime, and he has only served 6 days of a 6 month sentence, based on filing appeal.

Is he out? And is he not going to serve any more or is that pending appeal? Or did he win his appeal?

Kemug, I do empathize with your feeling but I believe from past readings that he was given "amnesty" for lack of a better word. They needed his cooperation to make the case against Sherri.
Aiding and abetting would only apply if he knew he was helping her commit a crime. But she was allowed to run off. It’s legal. There was no crime until she collected money fraudulently and lied to LE. He wasn’t part of any of that. He didn’t assist her with any of that. So he did not aid nor abet her crimes.

That was some video. Sherri continued to deny deny deny. I was more interested in KP’s reaction to the interrogation. It seemed pretty odd to me.
It was odd. Almost nonchalant.

I think on some level he knew his wife was lying. But he didn’t want to admit to it. He didn’t want to admit she may have left voluntarily and could be with other men on the side.

His body language does betray a bit of anxiousness, however, when he quickly jolts his body backwards in his chair, (while twiddling his thumbs).

She needs to pay restitution !

I almost think she is enjoying this negative attention, in an odd way ?

Her act has possibly hurt future victims in abductions of women.
What if this happens to someone else and it's not taken as seriously ?
That is my opinion.

IDK - the dropping her off in shackles part seems somehow illegal to me. Endangerment, aiding and abetting, or something.
I guess he made a deal, if he needed to.
No crime in being an imbecile, I guess.
There was no deal. He can drop her off in shackles. Unless he was part of a plan to defraud the government or others of money, or to lie to the cops, he’s not guilty of a crime. I thought he had to be in on it at first and assumed he had committed some sort of crime. But it looks like he wasn’t in on anything other than helping her to “escape” her violent husband and then create a story as to why she was gone. He doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed. My guess is he was enamored of her and thought she’d get together with him.

Yes, but how doesn't one stand by and watch another human being do that to herself and not do something about it? She was starving herself and physically assaulting herself!
Maybe he was trying to help her in his own way?

Oops! "does" not doesn't

But he then didn't say a word when Sherri maintained the lies and falsely received money, etc for years. We all knew about it, so he must have done too, especially seeing that he had such a personal interest. Regardless of kidnapping or no kidnapping, for over 5 years she was conducting a fraud, and he knew it. To my mind, that is aiding and abetting. Mr JR, I find you guilty.

I think I found it on law and crime. I am only 2 mins in and it's clear she is guilty. They ask if she wants Keith to stay or go and she is stressed and not sure what to say. Uh. If you were truly abducted, why would you care if your husband is there to hear some new breaking info?!?!

I'm watching it now too.... WOW... when they leave her alone with Keith before they spill everything... she is STILL gaslighting and lying to him. "They're f*cking with you!!!" she says to him. Okay...back to watching.
