Found dead in his cell 6/8/24. Sacramento coroner confirms cause of death for accused gunman in K Street shooting

The cause of death for Smiley Martin, an accused gunman in the 2022 K Street mass shooting, was revealed by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office Wednesday.

8/23/24 Update: Preliminary hearing held. State witness: Sacramento Police Dept. Detective Shaun McGovern, lead investigator. McGovern reviewed hundreds to thousands of hours of video footage from eateries, nightclubs & hotels around 10th & K streets to document the path defendants Martin & Payton took on April 2022. Martin’s brother, Smiley Martin, was also charged in the shooting that police said broke out when two rival gang members opened fire at each other. But Smiley Martin died in the downtown Sacramento County Main Jail in early June. Prosecutors formally dropped the charges against Smiley Martin last week. Testimony is scheduled to continue 9/11/24 @ 9am.
