The husband reportedly did try to get Sophie out of her mother's care and was not permitted to do so.
Despite what I would consider enough to at least look into it closely.

They tend to occasionally require "evidence" to remove a child from it's mother.
Especially a child under the age of 3.

Unfortunately "evidence" that someone is going to harm a child, often comes only after that child is harmed.

We have seen it several times.
One parent tells everyone the other parent is a danger to the child.
Over and over.

No one listens.
No one does anything.
Then the child ends up injured or dead.

Then everyone blames the other parent or family for not stopping it from happening.

No matter how hard they tried to stop it.

I can only imagine being this mother.
Once she is medicated and rational, it will almost be like someone else killed her child.
Very much like Andrea Yates.
On the one hand is grieving her child.
Yet on the other hand is the one who killed her and laughed at the charges.
It must be a tortured existence to have both of those in one person.

I can only imagine being this father... who tried to save his daughter.
Yet ended up losing her anyway.
He could have just abducted her.
But he would have been the bad guy if he had done that.

When an interpreter told Pedreros the charge against her, she laughed briefly.

oh for crying out loud. If this woman had mental issues where was her husband then? He feels bad for his wife cause she lost a child and in jail? She didnt lose a child. She murdered her baby. If I would even think about harming my child, my husband would urge me to get help. If I refused or didnt keep up my treatment I would be kicked to the curb so quickly it would make my head spin.

I understand the dad is suffering. I feel bad for him, but come on. Covering for the wife is not a good look. I wish my husband would murder my kid. They would have to lock him up to protect him from me. I love my son a tad bit more than I love my husband and I aint afraid to admit that.

I've looked at the pictures of Mom in the courtroom and read, that from the first point of contact, LE thought she was either UTI or mentally ill.

I keep thinking about that comment posted on one of the news stories. Someone said they were beginning the process of adopting Sophia. Maybe this is why the Father is asking for privacy and not to be judged. Who knows what the situation is/was. IMO, compassion is in order. We just don't have enough details yet.

I understand your feelings burbqueen, a case like this brings the Mama Bear out in you. We all wonder if Sophia was not protected like she should have been.

And they then came out and said her tox screen was negative... they couldn't find any drugs in her system. And that she had a history of mental illness which her family confirmed in the media.

As you said, this sounds very similar to the Andrea Yates case. I just hope the husband was not like Rusty ...

I just dont get then why didnt he divorce her and sue for custody. Then some other family was trying to adopt Sophia? How strange. I just find no excuse for one parent not doing something.

Court documents shed light on toddler murder case; McKinleyville mom to be arraigned today in Weaverville

When detectives served a search warrant on Claudia Pedreros' McKinleyville home on May 20 -- the day she allegedly drowned her daughter in the Trinity River -- they found plenty of indications of erratic behavior.

According to documents recently filed in Humboldt County Superior Court, investigators found the bedding stripped from 2-year-old Sophia's crib and a brown-haired doll lying in the crib's center. About a dozen knives had been taken out of a kitchen drawer -- leaving only a bread knife -- and placed in piles of Pedreros' personal items in various locations in the home. Some of the families' most important documents -- including Social Security cards, passports and a Chilean identification card -- had been placed in a trash can by the home's front door.

The documents shed a bit of new light on the case, which has largely remained shrouded in mystery since Pedreros, 30, was found walking naked along Highway 3 in Trinity County at about 9 a.m. the morning of May 20. Pedreros, who is from Chile, initially told Trinity County Sheriff's deputies that she didn't have a daughter, wasn't married and didn't know how she had gotten into the county. Officials said a blood sample taken from Pedreros that morning tested negative for narcotics.

The next day, after Sophia's body was pulled from the waters of the Trinity River, Pedreros reportedly told officials she drowned Sophia in the river before releasing her body to flow downstream with the current.

Criminal case put on hold for McKinleyville mother accused of drowning toddler

Arraignment and other criminal proceedings against a McKinleyville mother accused of drowning her 2 1/2-year-old daughter in the Trinity River were postponed today and a psychological study was ordered.

A report based on that study by two court-appointed doctors will be returned to Trinity County Superior Court at a hearing set for July 6.

BBM-I would call that move a no-brainer.

I don't get the husband blame. He didn't murder his daughter. He didn't cause mental illness. If he "should have" done more, that is one thing.
But he was not involved in this child's murder. That is important. He is a grieving father. That is genuine.
Mental illness is NOT easy to fix. You can't make a person take their meds. You can't make authorities take the child away if her needs are being met. We have no idea why he felt he couldn't do more.
Too many unanswered variables. But he is NOT TO BLAME for his daughter's murder.

Judge questions Claudia Pedreros' ability to stand trial; McKinleyville woman's competency hearing scheduled for July 6

Outside the courtroom, Pedreros' husband stated that after much soul searching he stands behind his wife 100 percent.

”I feel nothing but a very deep love and compassion for my wife Claudia,” Parker said. “In my heart, I know Claudia would not have been capable in any way of consciously hurting our daughter.”

Parker and Pedreros have been together for 11 years and married in 2004 in Chile, he said. Pedreros and Parker moved to Humboldt County so Parker could study fisheries biology at Humboldt State University. He graduated May 14. When Pedreros and their daughter went missing May 20, Parker was pursuing his master's degree in environmental science at the University of Nevada, Reno. That has been put on hold, he said.

”The main thing is to make it through the time of mourning and loss of my daughter,” Parker said, adding that the community has shown his family tremendous support.

Robert’s Vow

Claudia Pedreros’ husband remains devoted as she stands trial for the murder of their young daughter

(June 9, 2011) Robert Parker stood before a small group of reporters, his round shoulders slumped at his sides and his brow knitted in misery. “I’m Robert Parker,” he said in a quavering voice. “I’m Sophia’s father. I’m Claudia’s husband.” He lowered his head and squeezed his eyes shut.
The 47-year-old Parker, a tall, unassuming man with close-cropped dark hair turned gray on the sides, was standing in a sun-drenched corridor of the Trinity County Courthouse in Weaverville. Moments earlier, in a nearby courtroom, his wife had been arraigned for murdering 2 1/2-year-old Sophia, the couple’s only child.

According to the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, Claudia Parker Pedreros, 30, had been found four days earlier walking naked down rural Hwy. 3 north of Coffee Creek, a tributary of the Trinity River. Initially she told sheriff’s deputies that she didn’t have a daughter, was unmarried and had no idea how she’d arrived in northern Trinity County, 130 miles from her McKinleyville home. But when Sophia’s body was found in the Trinity River the following day, Claudia allegedly confessed to drowning her daughter and releasing her body to the currents.

Robert Parker’s chin trembled as he continued. “I have a written statement here to say, because it’s kind of hard to keep my thoughts together sometimes… .” He closed his eyes again. “This is a time of really profound hardship for … for everyone involved, and for especially my family. And it’s impossible … it’s impossible to express in words … the loss … the loss that we feel right now.”

We dont allow victim bashing, and dad is a victim. His wife drowned his daughter-I can imagine he is living a complete and utter hell right now.

Claudia Pedreros’ Brother Says Husband Was Abusive

In an interview with Chilean newspaper El Patagón, Marcos Pedreros says that, prior to her arrest, his sister Claudia had been suffering domestic abuse from her husband, Robert Parker, and her father-in-law, Robert Parker Sr.

Claudia Pedreros, 30, has been charged with murder and child endangerment for allegedly drowning her 2-year-old daughter Sophia in the Trinity River last month.

Marcos Pedreros, an Army officer in Chile, says in the story that his family only recently learned of the abuse Claudia was receiving. According to the report, Marcos says he called his sister two weeks before Sophia’s death and she confessed that she was having trouble in her marriage, but that the trouble was being resolved.

On a recent visit from Chile, Claudia’s mother saw how Claudia and Sophia were being treated and got into an argument with Robert Parker, after which he threw both Claudia and Sophia out of the house, Marcos Pedreros says.

Marcos Pedreros is quoted as saying that he and the rest of Claudia’s family in Chile had been trying to get her to return to her home country with Sophia, but that Robert Parker would not allow it. She had proof of his abuse on her cell phone, he says, though he’s not sure if that proof still exists.

In an email to the Journal, Marcos Pedreros said that he is coming to Humboldt County later this week to help his sister and to present evidence that has yet to be revealed.

In a phone interview this afternoon, Robert Parker declined to comment specifically about the allegations. “I’m not going to respond to his claims or anyone else’s claims at this point,” Parker said. “I don’t have the energy to respond to every opinion. I would rather respond to him [Marcos] personally, to give him that consideration.”

He denied that Claudia was considering moving back to Chile permanently, and he reaffirmed his feeling for Claudia. “I love my wife very very much,” he said. “I stand by her, and I maintain that.”

Pedreros marks, will travel to California to defend to the young traiguenina:

“My sister is completely innocent”
The brother of Claudia Pedreros, the Chilean who is accused in the USA to give death to her Sofia daughter, of 2 years, exclusively spoke with EPD the News and related episodes of his familiar life that could give an upset in the enigmatic case.

“We are distressed”, thus the situation defines Marks that at the moment her family in Chile is living, after finding out by the social networks the unfortunate process that faces the Chilean Claudia Pedreros Side (30), after being found walking naked in a zone near the Trinity river in the state of California (the USA), and that today faces North American justice by abuses and murder to its daughter.

<snip>

“We found out this by means, by Internet, because my brother-in-law was not either able (Robert Parker) to inform to us immediately into this situation. <snip>

<snip>

AN OPEN PUZZLE

The defense of Claudia Pedreros is in the hands of a lawyer engaged by its husband, who would be expert in cases of this type and in particular in the State of California.
<snip>
Of all the information that are well-known, there is some other aspect with respect to the behavior that says would have had Claudia, that it does not do sense to them?

<snip>

MENTAL UPHEAVALS

One of the keys that have maintained the defense is the mental state of Claudia Pedreros, and this is sustained by the situation in which that day Friday 20 of May was found: it undresses, not knowing that had a daughter and husband, and without knowing how and why it had arrived until a distant highway of his home in the zone of McKinleyville.

<snip>

HIDDEN MALTRATOS

Another edge that not yet is analyzed by the defense of Claudia in the USA is I mistreat that it was suffering on the part of the Parkers. Claudia maintained its familiar problems in reserve during some time, and the family in Chile only found out it few weeks before happened the death of Sofia. <snip>

- My brother-in-law, Robert, threw mother of the house by some discussion with respect to the treatment that he was having with my sister and my niece. So that my mother obvious saw that she was not very well my sister in the conditions in which she was living.

<snip>

“She was speaking, of all this type of I mistreat, with a social worker of there, was looking for direction to know what could do in this case. This type of information does not have the defense, and will take I it”, relates Marks.

“SOFIA, WAS THE CLAUDIA WORLD”

Sofia Parker Pedreros had 2 year and a half at the time of its death. Relatives and friendly of Claudia assure that she felt a deep love by her daughter and who its life turned around her, who Sofia was its world. <snip>

Wow, I really don't know what to make of the brother's allegations. My first thought after reading his story is that if CP is indeed mentally ill, what she told her brother may not be factual. But the bothersome part is her own Mother supposedly witnessed something in the home?

There is something about Mr. Parker that bugs me and has since the beginning. I'm entitled to state my opinion, so please do not say I am victim bashing.

Hi-I'm new on this forum but have been following the case closely as I live in the area where it happened.
I was interested in getting the updates on what her brother from Chile has to say. I also followed the Chilean newspapers. Looks like he is here today.
There are many aspects of the case that leave many questions. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the post that someone was trying to adopt Sophia. Some on the local forums got upset because it appeared but that post then disappeared although a few others noticed it too.
I haven't seen many comment about the prescriptions found at her house for Klonopin and Depakote (although no street drugs found in tox screen). Those are some serious psych RX's with serious side effects if you look them up. (including memory loss). Interestingly, as far as I know the reports didn't say they had been prescribed to HER- or were they for someone else?
I guess we'll hear more on July 6-after her competency evaluations.
