"This is unthinkable torture," is how Dayna Herroz, the woman's mother, described living through the past year.
It was one year ago Thursday that her daughter and grandson were found murdered in their Southcrest apartment. Tori Vienneau, 22, and her 10-month-old son, Dean, were found strangled in 2006. Police at the scene said that the baby was found hanging by a noose from his crib.
No one was ever arrested in connection with the killings, and police said Thursday the investigation is still open.
Surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, Herroz pleaded for someone to come forward with information about the case.
Police have not said if there are any suspects, but family members of the victims told NBC 7/39 that they think they know who is responsible.
"I'm absolutely sure, in my opinion, absolutely, absolutely," said Herroz.
Herroz told NBC 7/39 that she believes the baby's biological father is the murderer. She said that at the time of the killings, the two were battling over child support. Herroz said her daughter planned to meet with the father the night of the murder and tell him she was taking the matter to court.
NBC 7/39 went to the home of the child's father on Thursday, but people in the residence refused to comment on the case.
Police would not confirm that there was a suspect in the case, but they did say that they believe that there are now other people with information about the crime in addition to the killer.
"We believe this is the kind of case that someone has communicated with others, and we're just asking those people to come forward," said San Diego Police Sgt. Dave Johnson.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at Bonita Vista High School, which Vienneau attended.
Anybody with information about the case is being urged to call San Diego police at 619-531-2276 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-TIPS.
