IMO if the evidence is such where a conviction is probable, they would only play the NCRMD to garnish sympathy for a unlikely decrease in sentence or earlier parole release. Of course with the magnitude of this case and the publicity, that would be a stretch.
I would think DG would opt for prison rather a mental hospital, given the speculation of him being a loner.
Link provided for a quick Fact Sheet read about The NCRMD Population in Canada.

"For most offenses, individuals found NCRMD tend to be detained longer under Review Boards than had they been found guilty and sentenced to prison xi."

"Less than 3% of violent offenses can be attributed to people with mental illness (when substance abuse is not present) xii."

Wow, interesting info, especially that a majority do not commit serious violent crimes and how they are detained longer. I wonder if defense lawyers tell their clients this if they want to plead NCRMD?

Every cold blooded murderer is mentally ill IMO. There are some illnesses that are more severe than others tho like psychosis, PTSD, schizophrenia and psychpaths. There are many factors to consider but even if deemed mentally ill there is rarely a proven cure so regardless people who claim that as a defense are locked up somewhere. Hospital or jail doesn't matter to me. Just keep them away from everyone else.

An interesting article about the murder of Nancy Cooper. This case reminds me of the same attention that has been given to NO, KL, and AL. I am curious why it is published now.

So awful, so much harder to get away from the grip of abusers when children are involved and especially her case - where she's in a different country away from her support system/family :(

An interesting quote in the article also which could relate to the Liknes case:

"And that's why with intimate homicides, we look at the family members, often. Because it`s in the context of attachment that envy, rage, the wish to be like the other gets stirred up." (BBM)

Personally, I think this will be the result in the Brentwood murder trial as well. i often wonder how verdicts like this affect the victims' families. Does it make it harder or easier or is the mental illness just another sad and unfortunate element to an already sad story?

I would think that if mental illness was going to come into play in the Liknes case, assessments would've been requested and performed on DG already?

I would think if a NCRMD defense was going to be used, Defense Council would of wanted a psychiatric assessment done right after arrest to determine mental fitness at the time of crime. I would think that waiting months later would not be as effective. In the De Good case, he was immediately given an assessment.

Would we necessarily be aware of a psychiatric assessment having been done on DG? Just wondering if this is always made public...

It is usually asked for at one of the court dates. A request is made and a Judge orders the assessment.

Forgive the massive generalization, but those are the typicals of Borderline Personality Disorder.

I was going to say that he definitely had some sore of imbalance going on for sure. It could also be schizophrenia. I had a nightmare of a relationship with a high-functioning bipolar dude that sounds almost identical to this. The ruining of special occasions are also common with all types of illnesses...alcoholism, drug addiction, as well as the DVM classed illnesses. I am soooo happy you were able to get out of the situation and move on to a much more balanced, healthy and happy life. :) Its sad, but some never get out, and often times if they do, it's not the way they would've chosen to. There are lots of unbalanced, untreated people out there who are not receiving medical attention, and they're sick, they need help. Anyone that is good, kind and caring would automatically want to help (once they figured out what they were dealing with), and unfortunately most find out too late when emotions are already involved and the relationship is in full swing. Tough situations to get out of, but you did it! :happydance:

...and, as in Mathew deGrood's case, the results of the assessments are sealed until after the trial. So no, its not always made public up front, but could be perhaps after the trial.

Thanks Think, it literally feels like a lifetime ago and sometimes I still can't believe that was my life or that it was me. I feel very fortunate and blessed that I'm no longer around a person like that :)

It's very sad people can't get out of situations in life that spiral into something they least expected to have happen in their lives. I feel bad for all the victims out there from violence, there are no many.

And yes, I agree there's way too many untreated folks out there fending for themselves without help. I wish we could all change the world and rid it of awfulness, it would be a much better place. Thank goodness for the good, selfless people out there giving to others and helping, it's amazing what changes are made because of them.

The tragic thing about mental illness...many/most believe it's their prescribed medication is being forced on them, and everyone thinks they are better off without their meds. The chaotic, unbalanced way of life is more acceptable than the relative stability of being on the right medication.
This is so frustrating for everyone trying to offer support.

Re: Mental Illness in Liknes Case: Unless DG has other information on what exactly happened, and is pleading not guilty, otherwise, I'm certain he would've played on his already diagnosed ADD plus perhaps added more symptoms of another mental illness. JMO

This is a Jian Ghomeshi article but I am interested in how Jesse Brown passed the story onto Star because they had the resources and liability insurance. So do the reporters that covered the Liknes/Obrien case have limitations? Are there reporters in Calgary that can uncover and reveal more details and publicize over another?

Interesting question, definitely would like to know the answer.
