Just because the police are not ruling out a connection between the Trenton homicide and Amber Kirwan's disappearance does not mean much IMO. At this point in a homicide investigation I don't think police would rule out a connection to ANY crime or suspicious occurrence - it's just way too early.

Saying they aren't ruling something out is not a substantial statement.

Maybe the two events will be connected but at this point I don't really understand why they are being discussed together - is there anything of substance to link the two events besides proximity?

I'm trying to figure that out myself. :waitasec:

It sounds like Ed Phalen was shot in the yard of the home next door to his home.

He was found at 22 Mechanic St., his home was 26 Mechanic St.

The victim lived at 22 Mechanic Street, he went to 26 Mechanic Street to buy cigarettes. He was shot when he was at the front of his home on the sidewalk. His wife heard the shots and ran out.
Alot of people where I work were late for work due to the RCMP/Police stopping everyone and checking cars the day after the crime. These kind of crimes do not happen here very often so it throws the whole community off when it does happen. It doesn't seem to me to be a random thing more like someone waiting for him.

Const. Ken MacDonald is now saying that they have ruled out any connection between Amber's disappearance and the shooting on Mechanic St.

Const. Ken MacDonald, a spokesman with New Glasgow Police, says police were investigating whether there might be a connection between the two cases, but today he says they have ruled that out.

Well, New Glasgow area LE certainly have their hands full now. 2 Major Investigations, unrelated. I do feel bad for the area residents, it will be extremely shocking to their everyday lives, no doubt.

I was reading an old article, and something stuck out to me. Probably just me, and may have already been discussed, but, what road is he referring to here? There were at least 2 possible roads that could have been taken, weren't there?

Campbell blames himself for not trying harder to locate her the night she went missing.

"I should've been there. I should've waited longer around there. I should've tried harder to skim up and down that road," he said.

The following is a very interesting statement. They are now saying that there is no 'indication' that the recent shooting and Amber's kidnapping are connected; but they are not 'ruling out the possibility'.

“At this time – and we’re still in the preliminary stages of our investigation – there is no indication that the disappearance of Amber Kirwan and this investigation are related,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Brigdit Leger. But at the same time police aren’t ruling out the possibility, she said.

And this write-up centers specifically on Amber. Nothing really new, though.

But, he adds, despite Tuesday’s homicide, work on the Kirwan case has not slowed down.

“That’s why we called in the RCMP to take the lead in the Trenton homicide,” MacDonald said. “We’ve had unusual circumstances in the last few weeks – it’s been extraordinary for the region – but as a result of the homicide in Trenton, there’s been no scaling back of resources, that’s why New Glasgow has asked for additional resources from the RCMP and why we’ve taken these measures.”

Some double talk going on, if you ask me.

I think it's still a possibility they are related. JMO

Police aren’t saying that Tuesday’s murder was an isolated incident, either.

“It would be premature to speculate that this is an isolated incident,” Leger said, but added that she didn’t believe Trenton residents had to worry.

“This isn’t a regular event in Trenton. It’s a very community-oriented, safe area.”

An autopsy was carried out in Halifax on Wednesday on Phalen, she confirmed, but police can’t disclose any of the results since that is part of the investigation.

Wondergirl: I agree. They can't seem to make up their minds which way to go with this--everyday (and sometimes twice a day) they change their minds.

I have followed quite a few cases, and don't recall any where LE has gone on record for and against the same concept, twice each, in two days.

There is a reason. I don't believe it's inexperience or being spread too thin.

A night of drinking and dancing seems like a bad choice given that theres possibly a kidnapper/murderer in the community who targets intoxicated young ladies from bars.

That video of the candles on the wall just brings tears to my eyes. To travel down the whole length of it like that instead of showing the whole wall at once sures gets the point across.

PHALEN SHOOTING NOT RANDOM SAYS POLICE

An R-C-M-P spokeswoman says investigators believe the victim, 44-year old Edward William Phalen, was targeted.

No arrests have been made in the case.R-C-M-P say they still believe someone in the community may have information related to the shooting, and are asking people to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
